Halfway Heartbroken

"Why don't you ever let me know what's going on in your life? I could help you, Jonathon."

Your voice was begging, pleading almost, to the point where you were crying because he wouldn't let you in. Or he didn't want you in.

"___, you can't help me with anything right now. This is for myself to figure out on my own. I'd appreciate it if you could leave."

His eyes never met yours the entire argument. All you ever wanted was to help him out, from the beginning of eighth grade year when he was being made fun of for something as idiotic as having a misspelled word on a test.

You met his mom and brother later on, Joyce loving you and Will finding some sense of peace and happiness whenever you were around. You were like the knot that kept the family tightly together, as if they weren't already.

"But, Jonathon-"

He shook his head, the thin, almost pencil drawn, brown hairs swept his forehead. "No. ___, you should leave. Please."

He wasn't asking, he wasn't requesting, he was demanding. Demanding in the sweetest way possible because he knew how fragile your heart was after your grandmother's death only a few months ago.

He knew that even though you had been best friends with him for a while that you would eventually fall in love with him because of the type of person he is.

Screw Steve Harrington because who needed that jerk of a person anyways? The Byers did nothing to deserve all the mistreatment and hate they earn. What they really deserve is a normal life, with great achievements and love.

Your salty tears had now run down your cheeks, onto your lips, and down your chin. You kept your eyes fixated on his that weren't quite looking at yours.

"Jonathon, I thought we never broke apart. I thought I was the one who helped protect you."

He sighed, clenching his hands as he tried to come up with something else to say to that. There was a pause between us, nothing but the sound of Will's crayon roughly drawing on a sheet of paper in the kitchen.

Jonathon stepped out of the doorway, getting down on the porch where you were now standing as he took your hand in his. "Look," He began, making sure you were hearing his every word. You were clinging onto whatever he was going to say.

"I don't want to hurt you but we knew at some point, this," He motioned between the two of you, "Was going to come to an end."

You stepped back some, wiping away a few tears with the sleeve of your sweatshirt, while Jonathon stared at you, no emotion in his eyes that were showing to you at least.

"I'm only halfway heartbroken, Jonathon Byers. I know we can work this out but I just need you to see that."
