Flannel

The morning started off with the cool breeze blowing in through your open window. Your nose was stuffed, and red on the tip like Pennywise had become a part of you. You hurriedly shut it before wrapping the wool blanket around your shoulders tightly.

"Honey, waffles are downstairs on the table!" Your mom yelled as you let out a loud cough. Not to signal anything, but your sickness had come from the open window.

Lucas had snuck in the night before to hang out and since you were grounded, you weren't allowed to have friend over currently but you needed some math help and Lucas was in your class.

"Honey?" Your mom called again in an uncertain tone. You quickly slipped on some white fuzzy socks that were laying around, hurriedly put up your hair into a messy bun, and wrapped the blanket back around your shoulders as you opened the door.

The smell of waffles was very tempting as you made your way into the kitchen form your room, and you were starving. "Good morning, sleepyhead." Your little sister said in a sassy tone, putting her dish in the sink as you rolled your eyes.

"You look sick, honey. Are you alright?" Your mom asked, suddenly noticing the tip of red like the clown nose and your pale colored skin that was usually sun kissed. You looked sleepy, your eyes dropping from the loss of sleep in the darkness.

"Yeah, but I'm fine. I have to go to school." You objected. Your little sister laughed. "Haha, sucks for you!"

"Amy!" Your mother snapped in her direction as she obediently walked up the stairs to get her backpack for school.

You wiped your nose with a nearby napkin that was laying around, throwing it away in the trash can before going to grab a plate. "Are you sure you don't want to stay home? I can call Mrs. Henderson to come check on you every once and while since she lives right next door and-"

You stopped her. "I'm fine, Mom. Really. I have a math test today, anyways, and wouldn't miss it for the world." You said, sarcastically.

Your mother sighed. "Alright. Hurry up and eat now, you don't want to be late."

You let out a small sneeze as you walked into Hawkins middle school, a few students moving quickly out of your way. Your friends were huddled around your locker, waiting for you to arrive.

You sent a smile to Lucas who noticed you first. "Hey!" You smiled at them, a cough immediately following it as they all took a small step back. You nodded, looking over at Lucas.

"That damn window you left open got me sick." You told him, a smile playing on your lips. A teacher passed by the two of you as soon as that sentence slipped out.

"Language."

You turned to her and smiled. "It's English, m'am." She lowered her glasses down at you and you sent a friendly smile back as she kept turned around and kept walking.

"So, about that window, you two?" Mike asked, causing a blush to spread to your face but luckily, your cheeks were red from the cold that it didn't show.

"I was helping her study but she's grounded so I couldn't just walk through the front door."

Will looked from the two of us before saying, "Well, that was nice of you." (I'm sorry guys, but he's my son & an innocent bean).

"Yeah, I needed help with it so," You trialed off, looking off down the hallway. "Anyways, I'm ready for that math test today so I should make a 100 on it."

Lucas smiled at you. "Good."

The conversation was awkward between you two but the silence was more awkward. Silence sat between the group, settling more between you and Lucas but the bell broke it.

"Off to class." You said, smiling before letting out a cough and walking with Will off down the hallway.

You and Will were coming back from the math test, talking about the small mistakes you both had made as you went into the cafeteria.

"Will, hey!" Mike shouted to Will, ignoring you as you rolled your eyes. Mike yelled again, "Oh, and, you too, ___!"

There was a small smile playing on your lips when you saw Lucas motioning you over. You sneezed, sitting down and groaning.

Will took his rightful spot beside you, handing you half of his sandwich. You nodded, silently thanking him, before talking to Lucas.

"What about the math test?"

"I passed!" You exclaimed, excitedly. Even with your sickness, passing the math test brightened your day. You took a bite of the sandwich and thanked your lucky stars you didn't get sick for nothing.

"Awesome!"

You nodded, eating the rest of the sandwich as your friends talked about the recent Dungeons and Dragons game they had recently played.

Another sneeze from your nose. "Jesus." You said, now wishing that you had shut the window after he left but you were so caught up in how cute he looked when he was passionate about something.

"Hey, here's my flannel." Lucas suddenly said, shoving it in your lap. You questioned him. "What?"

He began scratching the back of his head. "Well, you're sick and cold." You gratefully slid it on your arms, smiling.

Thank God for Lucas' flannel.
