Jailed Dreams, Fairytales, & Just A Kid

a/n: wow, long title sorry about that. this is a lyric in a wonderful song called 'The Wonder Years' by Jon Bellion, who I saw in concert on September 13, 2017. enjoy :)

Before the war, before the lives
Before my brother left that night, yeah
I was just a kid, I was singing la la la la la la la la
Shit was simple just like la la la la la la la la

Your brother had left that night, leaving you and your family in a bucket of tears but there wasn't much you could do.

You were just a kid.

Yeah, before I grasped that people died
Before I saw my sister cry
I was just a kid, I was singing la la la la la la la la
Shit was simple just like la la la la la la la la

It had been several years after your brother had gone off to fight in the war, and of course, like all movies and books and good things or people in life, it came to an end. His life came to an end.

You were just a kid.

So take me back to the days when I was younger
All this bullshit is overrated

Everything had happened so suddenly, while you were still just a kid, living cluelessly in the world.

Except, you weren't so clueless after that night of your brother being killed and your sister shutting everyone, including you, out and being solitary.

You were just a kid.

Back to the days, pour some shots out with my people
We gon' sing like la la la la la la la la
At our local bar like la la la la la la la la

You weren't huge into drinking but it tended to keep your mind off of things you wished you could forget, even being eighteen years old.

You were just a kid.

Before the world turned grey and old
Before we both fell out of love, yeah
We were just kids, we were singing la la la la la la la la
Love was simple just like la la la la la la la la

Your ring finger bore a small engagement ring that you hadn't taken off since you had received it from him. He couldn't leave your mind, he wasn't able to with you constantly locking the doors and throwing away the keys.

Love used to be so simple until he broke your heart at only twenty years old.

You were just a kid.

Before they put our dreams in jail
Before we lost our fairy tales, oh
We were just kids, we were singing la la la la la la la la
Love was simple just like la la la la la la la la

You had big dreams for a family of your own after everything that happened with your own childhood family. You lost everything that brought joy to being a child.

You continually reflected on this when you watched others pass you with a child's hand in theirs or when you knew these kids could grow up with fairytales or dreams of their own.

You didn't want anymore broken hearts.

You were just a kid.

So take me back to the days when I was younger
All this bullshit is overrated
Back to the days, pour some shots out for my people
We gon' sing like la la la la la la la la
At our local bar like la la la la la la la la

You didn't spend much time drinking still at the age of thirty but you did tend to think of everything as overrated, like most of your dreams were just jokes to be laughed upon.

You were just a kid.

They say my dream is unreal
I'm forgetting how the sun feels
I'm forgetting how love heals
And my niece is blowing bubbles in the yard

You did stay inside more often than being out, but always enjoyed seeing your niece. Even after all of these years of your own solitude.

You were just a kid.

Economy is down, too
They're lying on the damn news
People murdering for damn shoes
And my niece is blowing bubbles in the yard

You never watched the news being in your forties now. However, a lot of people had riots against stores or against other citizens that made you stay inside, looking down at the never to be engagement ring he had given you so many years ago.

You were just a kid.

Think about it, my niece is blowing bubbles in the yard
My niece is blowing bubbles in the yard
My niece is blowing bubbles in the yard, yeah

She was still just a kid to you and her mother.

You were just a kid.

So take me back to the days when I was younger
All this bullshit is overrated
Back to the days, pour some shots out for my people
We gon' sing like la la la la la la la la
At our local bar like la la la la la la la la

very different from my usual imagines but I thought it would be interesting.

the guy that is mentioned that gives you the ring can be any character from st that you want it to be. I thought I'd try it differently for this story & hopefully you all liked it :)

thanks for reading & stay strange(r) (things) my friends.
