He saw the frown. He saw the dark circles. He saw the slouch. He saw the fatigue evident in your demeanor. You were overworking yourself. Again. He approached you, gently placing his hands on your shoulders. You did not look up from your computer screen as you sat at your desk.

"Are you feeling okay, (Y/n)?" Koshi wondered aloud.

"I'm fine," You muttered with a huff. "Just have to finish this work." Koshi frowned, knowing you were not being entirely truthful.

"You should take a break, hun," He told you softly, but you simply shook your head. Koshi sighed, knowing the methods necessary to ensure you took a breath. It was one task to the next and you moved without realizing how late it had gotten. You missed dinner. Koshi grabbed onto the backrest of your desk chair. He pulled it, and you, away from the desk.

"What are you doing?" You asked. The exhaustion was obvious.

"Stand up," He instructed, gesturing with his hands. "Come on, let's go."

"May I ask where you're taking me?" You questioned, folding your arms over your chest. Koshi shook his head.

"Get your coat and get your shoes," He stated. You frowned, finding his behavior unamusing. Koshi then clapped his hands, urging you to get going. You let out a deep sigh, slowly rising to your feet. You stretched, reaching your hands towards the ceiling, hearing and feeling your joints pop. You followed Koshi to the front door, picking up your shoes and coat along the way.

Koshi led you out the door. Crickets were chirping, the sun having disappeared some time ago. You hugged your jacket closer to you, resisting the cool autumn breeze that blew past. The fresh air was nice to lungs that had been inside all day. You saw Koshi ahead, already walking down the sidewalk. You chased after him, not wanting to be left behind.

"Can I know now where we're going?" You asked, giving the man next to you a glance.

"Can't you just trust me?" Koshi wondered with a playful smirk. You let out a small laugh. Koshi led you down the familiar street, the one you lived on. It was quiet out that night, with not much traffic on the road, even less on the sidewalk. It was... kind of nice to be out with Koshi. It had been a while since your last real date. Though, a walk down the street well past your bedtime was not really a real date either. Koshi approached the convenience store you lived near.

"You stay here, I'll be right back," Koshi promised and quickly dipped inside the store. You stood near the doors, resting your back against the wall. Your hands were in your pockets, observing those that passed by. The flashing headlights of cars were bright but few and far between. You closed your eyes, feeling another cold breeze brush past.

"Here," You heard Koshi's voice say. You opened your eyes, seeing he was offering you a colorfully labeled product. It was your favorite snack.

"Thanks." You opened the package, beginning to munch on the treat. Koshi reached for your unoccupied hand, lacing his fingers with yours. He tugged on your arm, pulling you in the direction of yet another undisclosed destination. His hand had always felt right in yours, a comforting reminder he had been there, was there, and always will be there.

"I've been thinking about something lately," Koshi began, swaying in his steps. "We've been together for a while now, right?"

"Of course," You nodded along, curious as to what he was getting at. Koshi bit the inside of his cheek, slightly nervous to continue.

"They, uh... They say when you know you know," He mumbled, his eyes focused on the path ahead of him. "And I know. I was wondering if you did too." Your brows furrowed.

"I have no idea what you're talking about," You admitted, giving him a confused look.

"All I'm saying is that I love you," Koshi said, positive in his assertion. "And, maybe, someday, I'll ask you to marry me." You chuckled, finding his roundabout way of getting to the point amusing.

"If you were to ask me," You told him with a sly smile, "I'd say yes." You saw Koshi's grin, a small blush painted his cheeks. He squeezed your hand just a little tighter.

"Too bad I'm not proposing," Koshi sighed, starting to swing your interlocked hands back and forth. "The stars are beautiful tonight." At his mention of them, you looked up. The night sky was like a painting, one words could not capture. Such beauty drew awe from anyone. All those stars, millions of miles away. It made one feel so small, like a grain of sand in the shifting dunes of time.

Though, nothing about this life ever feels that small. The pain, the regret, the fear, the melancholy; it all feels as though it's capable of tearing worlds apart. The happiness, the relief, the joy, the love; it all feels as though it's capable of bringing those same worlds together again. Perhaps we are not as small as we appear to be. ButΒ if we are so small, our lives so fleeting, we must cherish every second we have. If we are so small, yet we feel so significantly, that itself is reason to thankful.

You held Koshi's hand tighter. The love you felt for him was anything but small. You promised yourself you would never let the truly small things distract you again.
