The boy sat on the bench. The sun was in the middle of the sky, peering gently down at him. He hid under a ledge, finding himself in the shade. It was quiet outside. He sat alone. The brunet would never forget what happened next.

"Um, hi. I'm (Y/n)," You introduced yourself with a nervous smile. Though it was somewhat forced, he thought your smile was the kind soldiers go to war for. Your eyes, which sparkled with just a dash of curiosity, made him forget his own name.

"Would you mind if I joined you?" You asked, your voice rattling the organ behind his ribs.

"Yeah," He quickly responded, only to realize his mistake. "Er, uh, no. I wouldn't mind... is what I mean." You sat next to the boy on the bench. Your appearance threw him for a loop and he found himself distraught, trying his best to keep it together. A person as gorgeous as you had ever sat next to him before. He thought it was silly to be so nerve-wracked over something like that, but he couldn't help it.

"What's your name?" You asked him, turning your head to look him in the eye. You still wore a small smile. His eyes darted from your face to the grass, finding your gaze taxing.

"Oh, sorry, I'm Chikara Ennoshita."

With those words, a new friendship had taken root. Between a year of laughter, study sessions, lunch conversations, and late-night chats when you both should have been sleeping, something bloomed. Ennoshita found himself thinking about you when you weren't around.Β

Out running errands for his mother, Ennoshita would stumble across something he found amusing. His first instinct was to wish you were with him. Or when he found out a family member had passed away, your arms were the first he wanted to run into. When you told him you were struggling, he dropped everything to tell you it was all going to be okay. Even laughing together at a stupid joke you made brought Ennoshita so much joy.

To share moments like those define a friendship. Then Ennoshita realized that wasn't what he wanted. He wanted to be with you, but not as a friend. The poor boy was lovesick over a schoolmate who happened to have the courage to ask if they could sit next to him. Sometimes he wondered what life would be like if you hadn't gone through with it. He wouldn't have fallen for you so hard, that was for sure.

Ennoshita couldn't explain what had happened. One day he looked at you, and it felt as if everything changed. Since the day you met he had thought you were the loveliest individual he had ever laid on eyes. Yet, the more he got to know you the more he found your heart and mind were just as lovely as your face. The little imperfections you displayed made you human, something he found he loved about you.

"Ennoshita!" You called out, your voice ringing in his ears. "I need to talk to you!" Ennoshita turned around to see you walking toward him. He paused.

"Hey, I was just coming to look for you," He explained, a smile gracing his lips.

"Oh, what did you need?" You asked, concern dipping into your features. Ennoshita shook his head.

"Your thing first," Ennoshita told you. You chuckled, he had a habit of putting your wants and needs above his own.

"You're pretty close with the third years on your team, right?" You questioned casually.

"I guess," Ennoshita shrugged. "Why do you ask?"

"I was just wondering if, uh," You hesitated, your body language reading uncomfortable. "Do you know if Sugawara has a partner? I thinking of asking him out." Ennoshita's breath caught in his throat.

"He doesn't," He answered honestly. "But if you think he'll make you happy... " Ennoshita struggled to speak, "you should go for it before it's too late." He watched the brilliant smile form on your face.

"Thank you," You told him genuinely, a gentle tone. "I'm a little nervous." He forced a supportive smile.

"He'd be so lucky to have you," Ennoshita said, meaning the words he spoke. "Anyone would." You stepped close, wrapping your arms around him. You squeezed him tight, then let go altogether.

"I'm going to go find him," You told your best friend confidently. "Thank you again, Ennoshita!" He watched you give him one last smile before disappearing. Ennoshita felt his fists clench. How could he be so stupid? Did he actually think you would ever feel the same way? He felt like such an idiot for almost convincing himself it was possible. How could it be?

Ennoshita was so used to going unnoticed. He was a perfectly average boy. He could never compete with someone like Suga, could he? You were out of his league. Ennoshita was lucky you were even his friend, to begin with. You deserve someone as kind, caring, and charming as Sugawara. Someone as handsome and loveable who could give you everything you ever wanted; that was who you deserved.

Ennoshita felt a lump form in his throat. It felt like he had swallowed a rock and was now suffocating on his own stupidity. His eyes burned with tears. They burned in the same way they did the time he accidentally got crushed cayenne pepper in his eyes. His stomach dropped. The feeling resembled the same one you get when you reach the top of a rollercoaster, but without the exhilarating thrill that comes directly after. He needed to sit down.

Ennoshita stumbled back, landing on a sturdy bench.Β The sun was diving down behind the horizon. He hid under a ledge, finding himself in the dark. It was quiet outside. He sat alone.
