Mission 14: Deep Darkness & Towering Mountains

"I'm so thankful that Jaune escaped that sinking ship," Pyrrha admitted, a relieved smile on her face.

"Indeed," Weiss nodded. "But now, Jaune has to make his way back to the coliseum, and I find it highly likely that Grimm will come after him."

"Yeah, but at least he won't be fighting them underwater," Yang pointed out. "Now, ssh! It's starting back up again!" She shushed everyone ad the lights dimmed.

The episode began with a Jaune making his way onto the rocky beach of the underground lake. He stood and wronged out his trench coat, turning to look back at the pool of water he emerged from. The ship had shifted and turned after he had escaped from it, so that now its masts were rising out of the depths. Shaking his head, the Huntsman made his way up the beach, eventually coming upon a man made tunnel, with stairs leading up to wooden double doors. Passing through this, Jaune found himself standing in a large circular hallway, with strange, erratic holes interspaced throughout the floor.

"Weird design choice," Nora frowned. "Who in their right mind would think random holes in the floor would make a cool pattern?"

"Oh, please," Adam scoffed. "You can't possibly be that naive, can you?"

"What's that supposed to mean?" Coco demanded, not likely the way Adam belittled her friend.

"Erratic holes in the floor? A strange, circular hallway that stretches onward? This is obviously a trap of some kind."

"He's right," Qrow nodded. "That's Dungeon Crawler 101 right there."

Jaune cautiously stepped into the hallway, but nothing happened. Carefully, he followed the curving path, until it took him into a side passage next to a long, curving wall. On the wall next to him was a large mural of a crowned skull, and beneath it some words were carved, which the Huntsman read aloud.

"At dusk when darkness is near the curtains shall fall. The Dance of the Bloodthirsty Dead." His mouth tightened into a grimace. "Guess that means more Grimm will come out when it becomes nighttime. Great..."

"What does he mean, Grimm?" Ruby asked. "Didn't it say the dead will be dancing, or something?"

"Haven't you been paying attention in Dr. Oobleck's class?" Ms. Goodwitch chided. "Some ancient cultures believe that the Grimm are the reincarnations of people who committed great crimes. The spirits of bandits and murderers, given psychical form."

"That would actually make sense, from a certain stance," Ren conceded. "Of course, the fact Grimm have no souls disproves that theory."

Jaune moved away from the mural, and followed the rounded wall to an iron gate. Behind the gate was a round, elevated platform. He tugged at the bars, but they wouldn't budge.

"No dice," the Huntsman sighed. "I guess there must be another way to open this." Noticing that the passage continued, Jaune followed it around into another long hallway, with more holes spread randomly throughout the floor. Keeping his eyes at his feet, the Huntsman made his way through the long curving corridor, until he arrived at a wall with a large collection of spikes jutting out from it. In the middle of the spikes was a skeleton, whose empty sockets bore down on him, its right arm extended out in front, with a glimmering bronze shield clutched in its hand. There were also words engraved into the surface of the shield. "The resonating emblem shall undo the seal of the shield," Jaune read. "That must mean those shields at the coliseum!" he realized.

"Man, Jaune's picking up keys left and right," Mercury noticed.

"The caretakers of this island must've taken security very seriously," Emerald commented.

Jaune reached out, and pulled the shield from the skeleton's grip, before tucking it away in his coat. It was then he noticed that the skeleton's elbow joint. For some reason, it appeared to be a lever of some kind.

"What's this?" the Huntsman mumbled, reaching out to pull on the skeleton's arm.

"Wait, Jaune!" Velvet cried.

Jaune pushed the skeleton's arm down, so that it was resting near its pelvis. Immediately after he did this, there was a grinding sound, before the floor began to slowly move towards the spikes. The Huntsman leaped away from the wall, then turned around and deflated. Spears were now rising out of the holes in the ground, each bursting upwards in random intervals.

"It figures," Jaune groaned.

"You fool!" Cinder scolded. "It was so obvious what that mechanism would do! Are you that stupid?!"

"I think he had to pull it, though," Tai spoke up. "It might've been the only way to open up that gate."

Jaune began running back down the moving hallway, dodging and weaving between the spears. For several minutes, he continued his dangerous dance, rolling forwards, spinning to the side, and stepping backwards when necessary. But finally,  he made it back into the side passage.

"He made it!" Kali sighed in relief.

"You want to know what's really surprising?" Ghira stated. "I don't think I saw his Aura flash once this entire time."

"That was cutting it close," Jaune panted, hunching over to regain his breath. Then he reached behind himself, taking the tail of his trench coat in hands. There were a few holes spaced throughout it. "I had more than a couple close calls, though." The Huntsman made his way back to the gate, which had now risen up, giving him access to the circular platform. Stepping onto it, he folded his arms and looked upwards as it rose slowly into the air.

"Back up to the surface," Qrow deduced. "I'm guessing he's heading back to the coliseum now."

"Most likely," Ozpin nodded. "After all, I believe he was supposed to pick up the Wheel of Destiny from within, according to that obelisk."

The platform carried Jaune up into a large glass dome, in the middle of a dimly lit cave. A large waterfall quietly churned and bubbles behind the Huntsman. Exiting the glass dome, he walked forwards towards the mouth of the cave, which light was shining from in several tranquil rays. Jaune stepped out into the sun, enjoying its warming glow.

"Back outside!" Nora cheered.

Jaune stretched his aching limbs, then sighed.

"You guys just can't give me a moment's peace, can you?" he demanded, referring to a trio of Sabyrs that were charging towards him from below the rocky crags.

"We should've known," Pyrrha shook her head.

"Take them down, Jaune!" Ruby called. "They're nothing to you!"

One of the Sabyrs clambered up the rocky slope, then lunged at Jaune, snapping at him with its large fangs. The Huntsman rolled away, and whipped out Ebony and Ivory. He fired at the Grimm, who leaped to the side, then ran across the wall to pounce upon him. Dropping to the ground, Jaune lifted Ebony and Ivory, pumping the Sabyr's stomach full of Dust-infused bullets. With a snarl, the Grimm collapsed.

"One down, two to go!" Sun grinned.

As the other two Sabyrs charged forwards, Jaune leapt down onto the rocky slope, and began to slide down towards them. As they approached each other, the Huntsman brought his fist back, then drove one of Ifrit's gauntlets into a second Grimm's face. Jaune fell into a roll, tumbling to the ground, the headless body of the Sabyr rolling down with him. Jumping to his feet, the Huntsman watched as the final Grimm leered down at him from atop the slope, its mouth curled into a snarl. Jaune's hand immediately flew to Alastor.

"Bring it on, kitty cat!" Yang laughed.

The Sabyr leaped forwards, plunging towards Jaune. The Huntsman tensed, and them, at the last second, unsheathed his sword. With a startled hiss, the Grimm fell in two halves on either side of the Huntsman.

"That's that!" Coco laughed.

"Good technique," Adam praised. "Waiting until your enemy is too close to defend before drawing your sword. I use that move myself."

"We know, we've seen it in action," Emerald muttered.

Jaune made his way along a small trail at the bottom of the slope, which led him to a cave lined with a pair of torches. He headed through the natural caverns, eventually arriving in the middle of a courtyard, similar to the graveyard he had entered earlier. As soon as he set foot outside of the cave, a group of Marionettes, as well as a couple of Fetishes, made themselves known.

"So you want to play too, huh?" the Huntsman grunted. Then he smiled. "Well, you're in luck, boys. My calendar is clear!"

"Kick their teeth in, Fearless Leader!" Nora called.

One of the Marionettes tossed a pair of daggers at Jaune, who deflected them with Ifrit. Then, drawing Alastor, he charged forward and impaled his attacker through the chest, before kicking the puppet away into two of its friends, smashing all three to pieces. Another Marionette rushed forwards, slashing at the Huntsman with its crescent-shaped blades. Jaune ducked under this, then spun into a slice that decapitated the oversized toy. One of the Marionettes twirled its shotgun, before aiming and firing off a shot. The Huntsman spun his sword in front of him, deflecting the buckshot. Then, he whipped out his own shotgun, and shot the puppet, sending it clattering to the ground in chunks.

"Alright, Jaune! Keep it up!" Mercury whooped.

A Fetish charged forward, slicing at Jaune with its flaming wheels. The Huntsman blocked the attacks with Alastor, then rolled away as the flaming puppet released a jet of fire from its mouth. Aiming his shotgun, Jaune fired off a round, stunning the Fetish, before throwing his sword forwards, slicing the puppet in half. A pair of Marionettes, seeing that the Huntsman was unarmed, rushed towards him.

"Think you've got the drop on me, huh? Sorry guys, you seemed to have forgotten my new toys!" Jaune dived away from a pair of daggers slashed at his back, before thrusting his legs forwards, his feet bursting into flame. The connected with one Marionette's chest, smashing it to pieces. The other puppet hurled one of its crescent-blades at the Huntsman, which he rolled away from, before charging forward, attempting to slash at his chest. Jaune quickly caught the puppet's arm in hand, before pulling it into a punch from Ifrit, obliterating its head. As the other Fetish's flaming wheels came rolling towards him, Jaune cartwheeled away, then pulled out Ebony and Ivory, firing off round after round. The amount of bullets slamming into the flaming puppet shattered the joints on its arms, causing its arms to fall. Charging forwards, the Huntsman simply slammed into the Fetish, carrying it to the ground, where it crumbled to ash a moment later. Jaune stood, and held out a hand, causing Alastor to return to him, before looking at a staircase, which led up into a large stone wall, stretching off into the distance. "I'm guessing those will take me back to where I first got Ifrit and fought Griffith," he deduced. "Good. That's where I'm heading anyway. 'Destiny awaits, somewhere deep in the coliseum.'" The episode ended.

"Man, this is getting good!" Yang grinned. Blake nodded.

"It is. Jaune's almost to the coliseum, and if my hunch is correct, there he and Griffith will fight for the last time."

"And all that's left after him is Myrmidon," Pyrrha added. "Jaune's almost defeated all of Mundus's henchmen, and the King of Grimm has yet to show his face."

"That's because he's probably dead," Ozpin shook his head. "Maybe he found a way to altar Grimm, and extend his life, but there's no way he overthrew the gods, or ruled over all the Grimm. He was just a madman hellbent on increasing his own power."

"If you say so," Abe mumbled.

Meanwhile, in the deepest reaches of the Grimm pools on Remnant...

"Jeez, are you seriously going to take all that smack-talk from that crotchety old bastard?" A horned humanoid merged in the middle of a Nightmare's back asked, regarding a giant statue of Mundus, who was sitting upon a marbel throne. The statue's eyes flashed red.

"Ozma," a powerful voice echoed from the statue. "You really believe that I'm a pathetic human like you? I let Salem have control over my Grimm, so that she could get her petty revenge on you." There was a dark chuckle that followed those words. "Of course, I fully expect her to fail. When she finally kneels defeated at your feet..." the statue's mouth curled into a smile. "That's when I'll crush you in the palm of my hand!"

"Man, the boss sure gets bloodthirsty when his feelings are hurt," a Beowolf commented, looking behind him as all the other Grimm gathered in the hall faced the movie screen on the other side of the statue.

"Wouldn't you?" an Ursa sitting next to it whispered. "No one disses the Grimm and gets away unharmed! We've got a reputation to uphold!"
