Chapter 48 - The unexpected confession

Charlotte's POV

"Thanks." I mumbled shyly, lost in his blue orbs while feeling flattered by his compliment.

"You are welcome, koukla mou." He gave me a mesmerizing smile, still caressing my cheek affectionately. "Umm... if you want, we can stop this game."

"No, I promised to help you. I will keep my promise." I stated, determined. "We are a team. Don't forget it. However, thank you for your suggestion." I gave him a grateful smile. "I have a thoughtful fiancé." I commented and winked at him playfully before resting my head on his shoulder.

He chuckled in amusement and wrapped his arm around my shoulder, pulling me towards him. "Thank you too for helping me." He said warmly and placed a soft kiss on my hair. I wrapped my arms around his waist, leaning my head against his chest and closed my eyes, breathing in his sandalwood scent.

As I finished signing the paperwork, I gave them to my assistant and stood up, grabbing my bag. Alexis and I had a meeting with a French photographer at the restaurant this evening.

When I was about to walk into his office, I saw his door ajar. He was talking on the phone. I gritted my teeth in annoyance as I understood that he was talking to Rebecca. He didn't let me stay alone with Nathan for a second, but he still kept in touch with his mistress. Alex promised me that he wouldn't see her till our argument was valid, but... I clenched my fist and listened to his conversation.

"Yes, Rebecca... I have to hang up. I have a meeting.... Fine... Bye."

I heaved a sigh, shaking my head while boiling with anger.

Brazen liar!

It is my fault to trust him. Don't you know men are untrustworthy, Charlotte? Alex isn't different from other men.

I pursed my lips together, ruffling my hair, and knocked on the door before walking in.

"Are you ready?" I asked dryly.

"Umm... Yes. Let's go." He said, giving me a smile, and grabbed his keys.

I walked out of his office without waiting for him.

As soon as he parked his car in front of the restaurant, I opened the door and got out of the car before he managed to open the door for me. He gave me a puzzled look, but I ignored it and walked towards the entrance.

"Did I do anything wrong?" He asked as he grabbed my wrist, stopping me.

"No." I replied curtly, pulling my arm away angrily.

He raised his eyebrow, looking at me, taken aback. I tossed my hair back and walked towards our table where the photographer was waiting for us. I heard Alexis mumbling something behind me before following me.

After greeting the French photographer, we sat down and ordered our meals. Despite the fact I noticed Alex's gaze on me from time to time, I ignored him and focused my attention on the photographer.

Suddenly, I saw Nathan walking into the restaurant with Victoria. He placed his hand on her back and led her towards the table next to the large window.

I averted my gaze and took a few sips from my wine. When I lifted my head up, I noticed Alex looking at me. From his gaze, I understood he also saw Nathan and Victoria. I averted my gaze and took a piece of my fish.

When I looked at Nathan and Victoria again, she was telling him something while he was staring at her, mesmerized. I pursed my lips together, squeezing the fork tightly, and looked away, gritting my teeth. You had to be a fool not to understand that there was something between them. So Nathan didn't lie when he told me there was someone else in his heart.

As soon as the meeting ended, Alex and I left the restaurant. Once the valet brought Alex's car, we got in the car. I leaned my head against the window, looking through the window. Meanwhile, I felt his gaze on me from time to time.

When we walked into the penthouse, I took off my heels after placing my bag onto the couch. Then I decided to go to the bedroom, still ignoring Alexis.

"Charlotte?" He grabbed my wrist, stooping me.

"What?" I snapped, pulling my arm away.

His jaw clenched, and he gave me a death glare. "What has gotten into you? If your golden boy found a new woman for himself, it isn't my fault." He said angrily.

I gritted my teeth and glared at him in frustration. "Yes, of course, you are an angel without wings. All men are the same. Untrustworthy bastards, nothing more." I stated bitterly, shooting dagger at him.

"Not all of them." He objected firmly, resting his hands into his pocket, looking irritated.

I burst out laughing. "Look who is talking! A man who keeps a mistress. As soon as you get your inheritance, you will rush into her arms." I commented mockingly and gave him a disgusting look.

"Maybe not." He said with a serious expression on his face while looking me in the eyes.

I smirked, unconvinced. "Oh... You are planning to find someone else. Is it that slut actress? Carla?" I mocked and gave him a sardonic look.

His jaw clenched as his muscles tensed. "Who knows?!" He said cockily without managing to hide the anger in his eyes. "At least, I don't run after my ex who doesn't give a shit about me." Alex added sarcastically and smirked arrogantly.

I gritted my teeth and wanted to slap him, but he grabbed my wrist, stopping me.

"You don't love him. You are just obsessed with him because you can't get him." He commented confidently, leaning towards me without releasing my wrist.

"Don't talk nonsense. I love him." I objected firmly and tried to pull my arm away, but he tightened his grip around my wrist.

"If you truly loved him, you would be happy for his happiness. Even if it meant, you couldn't be with him. Don't you see he is crazy for that girl?! Don't tell me you didn't notice how he looked at her." He stated firmly, looking into my eyes.

I averted my gaze, gritting my teeth, and pulled my arm angrily. This time he released my wrist.

"How do you know what being in love looks like? A womanizer like you won't understand what true love is." I declared bitterly.

His gaze darkened instantly and a muscle in his jaw twitched. He took a few steps towards me, closing the distance between us. I gulped in fear, but I didn't take a step back, trying not to show him that his intimidating look affected me without breaking our eye contact.

"You think you know?!" He hissed. "You are just blind with obsession to that multi billionaire bastard who doesn't give a shit about you. You don't even see that I am fucking in love with you." He blurted out furiously.

My jaw dropped in surprise. I stared at him, frozen.

Did I hear right?

"Or maybe you know, but you don't care. You only think about him. So don't tell me that I don't know what being in love is." He added, full of sadness and rage in his eyes and stormed out without letting me say anything.

I looked behind him, frozen. "Alex is in love with me..." I murmured, dumbfounded and ruffled my hair absently.

I grabbed my file and went to the conference room nervously. I was going to see Alex for the first time after Alex's confession. The last two days he hadn't come home. The housekeeper informed me that Alexis told her that he went to Greece to handle some problem in the shipyard, but I was sure that he lied because he wanted to stay away from me. On the other hand, it was better for both of us because I didn't know what to tell him. I was so confused. I couldn't stop myself from thinking of his confession.

My heart started pounding like crazy as soon as I saw him in the conference room. I missed him. The penthouse looked empty without him.

Once our eyes met, he averted his gaze and opened the file in front of him. I gritted my teeth in annoyance and greeted the people inside the room before sitting on the chair beside Alex.

As soon as the meeting ended, I stood up and gathered my things angrily. Alex annoyed me so much during the meeting; he had kept ignoring me. Even when he had to ask my opinion, he did everything not to look at me or talk to me directly. I wanted to strangle him so badly.

When I was about to leave, Alex asked me to stay, stopping me. Finally, Mister decided not to ignore me. I nodded and sat down on the chair.

Once everyone left, leaving us alone, he cleared his throat and entwined his hands on the table.

"If you want to end this game after what happened that day, you may do it." He informed me dryly without looking at me.
