Chapter 22 - The guest

Charlotte's POV

"I am fine. Don't worry." I gave him a reassuring smile.

Alexis breathed deeply in relief and ran his hand through his hair.

"Who were they? Did the police find them?" He asked firmly as we sat down.

"Not yet."

"It will be better if you hire a bodyguard. You have to be careful till they get caught." He stated, concerned. "If you want, I will order my team to take care of your security as well."

"No, don't worry." I gave him a grateful smile.

Actually, I was surprised by his attitude. I didn't think he would care about me this much; he really looked so worried.

"Don't tell me you don't want a bodyguard." He stated in an authoritative tone and frowned.

"Actually, not, but Nathan, my boyfriend insisted on it and ordered one of his bodyguards to take care of my safety." I sighed, ruffling my hair.

"Good." He mumbled dryly. "At least, he thought about it after putting your life in danger." He added sternly and clenched his fist.

I frowned and narrowed my eyes. "It wasn't Nathan's fault that there are crazy people who try to hurt innocent people in this country." I stated firmly.

He gave me an unconvinced look and shook his head. I gritted my teeth in annoyance.

This man managed to make me mad again!

What a talent!

"Nathan isn't a shady guy. So don't accuse him." I retorted angrily.

"Sorry. I will not say anything about your golden boy." He commented sarcastically, raising his hands in the air in surrender, and stood up. "Just be careful! And if you need anything, don't hesitate to call me."He added firmly with a serious expression.

I sighed, nodding. "I will. Thanks."

I gave him a grateful look while thinking why he talked bad about Nathan; he called him a golden boy. The journalist often called him by this nickname. Probably, Alexis read the articles about him and knew Nathan was a good guy. However, he acted like Nathan was bad news.

"See you in the meeting." He said, giving me a nod, and left.

When I wanted to ask my secretary to bring me a cup of coffee, my phone rang. I grabbed it quickly; I was waiting for a call from Nathan.

"Nathan, finally!" I exclaimed and breathed deeply in relief.

He was going to talk to his father and grandpa about his problem. His grandfather, Chad, told him to wait for him in Nathan's parents' house; he called him yesterday as soon as Nathan finished talking on the phone with his parents.

"What happened? What did they say?' I asked in curiosity.

"They lectured me why I didn't tell them, and why I tried to handle this problem myself. I had to tell them about everything and..." He heaved a deep sigh, pausing. "In short, it was a tough night." He added, tired.

"Nathan, what really happened? Why don't you want to tell me?" I asked, offended.

"Lottie, I don't want to talk about it. It was a mistake which I want to forget. Especially now." Nathan replied wearily.

"Fine!" I exclaimed dryly.

"Your father called me after I had left the mansion and offered his help." He informed.

"Yes, he is worried as well as my mother and Romeo. Dad wanted to send me a bodyguard to protect me, but I told him you have already taken care of it." I commented, ruffling my hair as I approached the window, looking through it.

"Yes, my father increased the security as well. Now when I go somewhere, I feel I am a president or a crown prince of some country." He said sarcastically and sighed sadly.

"I am sorry, but I am glad." I confessed playfully and added. "It is good to know you are safe."

"Your father suggested to me that we don't see each other for a while. So they leave you alone." He informed.

"Yes, he told me about it yesterday." I exhaled loudly and ruffled my hair.

"He is right." Nathan agreed.

"Yes, he is Asher Wright." I said playfully.

"Lottie!" He chuckled, amused.

"Nathan, stop worrying about me. Just be careful. It is you who they are after. They will not get in trouble because of me when they know I am protected." I reassured him softly.

"I will stop worrying about you if you let someone help Thomas." He said hopefully.

"Nathan! We talked about it. I don't like going everywhere with bodyguards." I reminded, annoyed.

"Please, Lottie. It is for your safety. And it will be better for Thomas too. If someone helps him, it will be good for his safety as well. I promised your father to increase the security." He stated firmly. "So if you don't let me, I will ask Asher to help me to convince my stubborn girl." He added wickedly, emphasizing the word convince.

I heaved a loud sigh, closing my eyes. "Fine, but it is because I know my father very well. If he takes care of the security, there will definitely be more than two bodyguards." I agreed, annoyed and rolled my eyes.

He chuckled. "Then we agreed."

"Fine." I sighed. "How about dinner in my penthouse? Away from curious eyes." I said cheerfully, emphasizing the words curious eyes.

"I am sorry, but I can't."

"Nathan, we talked about it. You will not push me away." I reminded, bored.

"It isn't about it, Lottie. I have a meeting with my team about this problem. Then I have to talk to my father." He informed firmly.

"Then tomorrow evening?" I asked hopefully and bit my lower lip, waiting for his answer.

"I have a dinner meeting tomorrow. Then I have to be at Stardust and check its security."

"Nathan! Do you really think I don't understand you are trying to stay away from me?" I commented, irritated.

"Lottie, I don't. I will visit you as soon as I am free." He said softly. "I have to hang up now. See you soon, princess."

"Take care!" I said, ruffling my hair, and breathed deeply after hanging up the phone.

***

As soon as I arrived home, I took a shower and changed my clothes. This evening, I was having dinner with my parents and Romeo's family at my parents' mansion.

I parked my car and got out of it, grabbing my bag. Romeo's car was parked beside my father's car and a dark gray Gelandewagen like Alexis' car. However, I couldn't see its license plate because my mother's car was parked in front of the car, not letting me see the license.

Can it be Alexis' car?

No, Charlotte. It is the family dinner, and we are going to discuss the details of the event to celebrate the anniversary of our family company.

However, it wouldn't be for the first time if Dad surprised me and invited Alexis to have dinner with us. He liked Alexis so much and tried to play matchmaker between us.

I frowned, annoyed as I saw Alexis in the living room chatting with my father and brother. Meanwhile, my mother was holding Amber in her arms while talking to Sienna.

"Here we go again!" I mumbled under my breath and breathed deeply before greeting them.

"Your hottie co-partner was waiting for you impatiently. He has been checking the time almost every five minutes." Sienna whispered in my ear in amusement, emphasizing the words your hottie co-partner as she approached me.

"Sienna, don't talk nonsense!" I warned her, giving her a dirty look, and rolled my eyes as she grinned.

"Let's have dinner." My mother suggested, giving a warm smile.

"Will Nathan accompany you to the event?" My father asked after sipping his red wine.

"No, he can't. I will be out of town this Friday." I replied sadly.

"Then Alexis will accompany you." My father suggested, catching me off guard. "He will be alone as well. So it would be better if you keep each other company. I hope you don't mind, Alexis." He added when I wanted to object, and he looked at Alexis.

"Umm... No, I don't mind." Alexis said politely and turned his gaze from my father to me.

He smirked as he saw my expression. I was angry at my father; he didn't stop trying to make Alexis and me spend time together.

After having dinner, I was talking to Sienna when my phone rang. I grabbed it and looked at the screen. It was Nathan. Once I informed Sienna, I picked up my phone while walking towards the garden.

As I finished talking with Nathan on the phone, I went back. Alexis and my father weren't in the living room.

"Where is Dad?" I asked Sienna while my mother and Romeo were busy with Amber.

"Your father went to his office to send an email to some businessman. And Alexis left urgently after someone called him." Sienna replied and gave me a mischievous smile.

"I didn't ask about Alexis." I scowled and rolled my eyes. I breathed deeply and asked in curiosity. "Who called him? Is there any problem?'
