Chapter 23 - The one

Charlotte's POV

She smirked slyly. "I don't know. He didn't tell us anything, but if you are worried, you can call and ask him." She shrugged her shoulders, giving me an amused look.

"I am not worried about him. I am just curious because maybe it is related to the agency." I replied nonchalantly.

"If you say so." She gave me an impish smirk.

I breathed deeply, annoyed and ruffled my hair. "You look like your husband." I commented, shaking my head. She grinned. "I am going to talk to my father." I informed and left, leaving amused Sienna behind me.

I knocked on the door and opened it. My father gestured for me to sit down and closed the lid of his laptop.

"Why do you play matchmaker between that idiot and me?" I asked, annoyed. "I love Nathan, and you know it. And I know you like Nathan as well. Why did you start making me spend time with Alexis at every opportunity?" I said, ruffling my hair angrily, and frowned.

"I like Nathan; he is a good boy. I know him and his family, but it doesn't make me feel that he will be a good husband to my precious daughter." He replied softly, giving me a tender look. "I want you to marry someone who will make you happy and loved." He breathed deeply, entwining his hands on the desk. "I don't think Nathan is the one for you." He added firmly and gave me a compassionate look.

"You think that idiot is the one for me?" I asked mockingly and rolled my eyes.

He grinned and nodded. "Absolutely."

My jaw dropped from his reply. I looked at him, dumbfounded.

"No! Never! Alexis and I?" I burst out laughing despite the fact I felt angry. "Dad, every time when we stay alone for more than twenty minutes at the same place, I barely hold myself from strangling him." I said between gritted teeth and breathed deeply, trying to calm down.

Dad must be crazy to think that annoying Greek and I are a match made in heaven.

He smirked knowingly. "See, it is our family love tradition. Trust me, it was the same between your mother and me in the beginning too. I also made her mad." He said nostalgically, full of love in his eyes. "And it was the same with your brother and Sienna." He winked at me and gave me a devilish look.

"But it will be different for me." I stated, determined and stood up. "Bye, Dad."

"See you, princess." He said, amused.

I rolled my eyes as I understood my father didn't change his mind about Alexis and me, and would do everything to make us spend time together. However, he didn't know I was stubborn like him, and I would never be in a relationship with Alexis. Even if he was the last man on Earth, I wouldn't marry him.

I called Alexis to inform that the meeting we were supposed to attend in an hour was changed while walking towards my office.

"Yes?" I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion as a woman picked up Alexis' phone.

Who is she? His girlfriend?

"Umm... I wanted to talk to Alexis." I informed, ruffling my hair as I walked into my office, and closed the door behind me.

"He is taking a shower." She replied arrogantly.

I raised my eyebrow as I didn't like how she talked to me. "You? Are you his maid?" I asked smugly, trying to annoy her.

"No. I am Rebecca, his girlfriend. I will inform Alexis that you called him." She replied insolently and hung up without letting me say anything.

I looked at my phone, dumbfounded and gritted my teeth in irritation.

Bitch!

He really chose someone who looks like him. An unbearable pest!

However, Alexis is better than her a million times.

I frowned, annoyed, shaking my head, and sat down on my seat.

"Why didn't you inform me that the meeting was canceled?" Alexis asked angrily as soon as he walked into my office.

I frowned and replied firmly. "I called to inform you, but your girlfriend hung up the phone without letting me say anything about it." He furrowed his eyebrows, puzzled. "I hope your girlfriend didn't misunderstand our relationship and get jealous." I added nonchalantly.

"I don't have a girlfriend." He stated confidently.

I looked at him, confused. "But that girl, Rebecca said she is..."

"She isn't my girlfriend." Alexis cut me off. "She is my mistress." He said boldly.

My jaw dropped from his honest confession. I cleared my throat and ruffled my hair, sighing.

"You are quite bold." I commented sarcastically and rolled my eyes.

"Do you prefer that I lie to you?" He asked nonchalantly, raising his eyebrow, and placed his hand into his pocket.

I pursed my lips together, trying to hold myself as I felt irritated. "You are frustrating." I mumbled under my breath and heaved a loud sigh.

"I heard it." He gave me a dirty look and left without letting me say anything.

"Asshole!" I exclaimed angrily.

I put on a silver backless long dress and checked myself in the mirror one more time. This evening I was attending our family company anniversary event with Alexis. He was going to pick me up.

I grabbed my phone as it buzzed. Alexis informed me that he was waiting for me in front of the building. I grabbed my clutch and left quickly.

When I walked out of the building, Alexis was waiting for me, leaning against his car while tapping something on his phone. He wore a black tuxedo and looked so handsome.

As he lifted his head, our eyes met. He straightened, roaming my body from head to toe, making me shudder under his intense gaze.

"Good evening." I gave him a warm smile as I approached him.

He cleared his throat, rubbing the back of his neck, and said huskily, looking into my eyes. "Good evening." He held his hand out to me and suggested. "Let's go."

I nodded, placing my hand on his hand, and let him lead me towards his car.

As we got in his car, he started the car after looking at me one more time.

Alexis rested his hand on my back protectively as the journalists approached us. We posed together when they started taking our photos.

"Did you break up with Nathan Carter?" One of the journalists asked me.

"No, he is out of town. So he couldn't accompany me." I gave him a polite smile.

"Please stand closer." The photographer asked us.

I bit my lower lip uncomfortably and moved closer to Alexis slightly, still leaving some distance between us. As the photographer asked us to stand closer again, I frowned in annoyance.

What did he want? We were already standing close to each other, but apparently, it wasn't enough for him. I didn't understand why he insisted that we posed like a couple who was in love or something like that?!

When I wanted to warn him to take the photos quickly without complaining, Alexis pulled his hands out of his pockets and wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me closer to him abruptly, catching me off guard.

When I looked at him in surprise, our eyes met, making me lost in his blue eyes. Meanwhile, he was staring at me intensely, making me shudder in sensation, and his mind-blowing sandalwood scent created a magical bubble around us, making me drunk in it.

"Did the police make any improvement about the gunshot?" One of the journalists asked me firmly. "There are rumors that they were mafia's henchmen." He added, giving me a devilish look.

"Thank you, guys." Alexis intervened as he noticed I felt uncomfortable about this question and led me towards the entrance, ignoring the other questions.

I breathed deeply in relief and thanked him after walking away from the paparazzi. He nodded without saying anything.

I was sipping my wine while talking to Sienna. Meanwhile, Alexis was chatting with my father and Sienna's father, Aspen Anderson. However, I caught him staring at me from time to time. As always, his gaze didn't leave me indifferent. I didn't understand why his gaze affected me this way. Even when Nathan looked at me, I didn't feel the same way like how Alexis' gaze made me feel.

"Lottie?" My father called me, interrupting my thoughts. I was so preoccupied by my thoughts that I didn't notice my father approached me.

"Oh. Sorry, Dad." I gave him an apologetic look and smiled warmly.

"Would you like to dance with me?" He asked, giving me a bright smile.

"With pleasure." I nodded as I held his hand and let him lead me towards the dance floor.

I rested my hands on my father's shoulders as we started dancing. I bit my lower lip nervously as I saw Alexis staring at me while sipping his whiskey.

After dancing for a while, my father called Alexis when he was passing by us.

"Could you dance with my precious lady?" He asked Alexis, catching both of us out of guard. "I want to dance with my wife too, but it is Lottie's favorite song." My father added, giving Alexis a warm smile, ignoring my warning look.
