Chapter 20 - Danger

Charlotte's POV

"Lottie, don't worry. I am fine. And I will handle the problem as soon as possible. Now stop worrying." He said softly, cupping my cheeks, giving me a reassuring smile, and kissed my forehead before pulling me into his chest.

After having dinner, Nathan suggested to go to his suite and spend the night there.

He held my hand, heading us towards the exit while we were talking about my new campaign.

When we were about to approach the SUV, his bodyguard pushed us to the side, making us hide behind the car. In a second, we heard gunshots. I grabbed Nathan's suit tightly while I was shaking in fear. Meanwhile, he was holding me against his body tightly, pressing my head against his chest protectively while his heart was beating faster.

"Sir, are you okay?" His bodyguard asked him, worried as the gunshots stopped.

"Yes... Yes..." Nathan mumbled, still holding me in his arms tightly.

"We have to leave immediately." Another bodyguard said firmly as he rushed towards us.

Nathan pulled back slightly and cupped my cheeks while tears were running down my cheeks uncontrollably.

"Are you fine, Lottie?" He asked anxiously, checking me if I got hurt or not.

I nodded without managing to say anything, still in shock. He hugged me tightly, placing kisses on my hair and forehead. Then Nathan helped me to get up while I was shaking like a leaf and scooped me up in his arms as I couldn't walk properly.

"Who were they?" I asked, sobbing while he was holding my hand. Nathan hadn't released my hand since we got in his car. He ran his hand through his hair and nibbled his lower lip nervously without saying anything. "Nathan?!" I exclaimed in a loud tone without managing to control my voice.

He breathed deeply and replied firmly. "Let's talk when we arrive at the hotel." Then he ordered the bodyguard to increase the security in the hotel and at the nightclub as well as in his parents' house.

As soon as we walked into his suite, I placed my bag on the couch and said firmly, folding my arms over my chest. "I am all ears."

He breathed deeply, running his hand through his hair, and informed uneasily. "There are some guys who want to do illegal things at my nightclub, but I will not let them. So they try to convince me."

"Convince you?" I mocked. "They tried to kill you, Nathan." I stated firmly as I shuddered in fear.

"Not to kill, but scare." He corrected and heaved a loud sigh, shaking his head.

"Who are they?" I asked, worried.

"It isn't important." He mumbled, running his hand through his hair, averting his gaze, and approached the window, resting his hand in his pocket.

"Nathan!" I clenched my fist angrily as I walked towards him and grabbed his arm, forcing him to turn towards me to face me.

"Lottie, really. It is better if you don't know who they are." He said softly, looking tired.

I sighed, shaking my head. "Why don't you inform the police?"

"I can't. They warned me. And if I inform the police, it will create a mess. They... they have something in their hands to blackmail me. It was all planned." He informed, trying to hide his nervousness and worry.

I raised my eyebrow and asked, concerned. "What is it?

He bit his lower lip, embarrassed and took a deep breath. "One time I did something stupid while studying at university. I was hanging out with my friends. Let's say a few of them pretended that they were our friends. They approached the students who were from rich families and tried to trap them. A few months later, they were expelled." He shook his head, breathing deeply, and continued, ashamed. "That day I was so drunk and made a mistake." He paused, biting his lower lip.

I looked at him, confused while there were different thoughts running in my mind. I knew Nathan very well; he wasn't a bad guy. However, I couldn't stop myself thinking about what he did; he looked so embarrassed.

"I regretted it as soon as I got sober, and I never repeated it again. I will not repeat it in the future as well." He assured me, cupping my cheeks, and nibbled his lower lip shyly. "But they taped it."

I nodded, giving him a sympathetic smile, and hugged him tightly. He hugged me back and buried his face into my neck, breathing in my scent.

"What will you do now?" I asked, worried as I pulled back slightly.

"My bodyguard is on it with his team." He informed, stroking my hair affectionately, and placed a soft kiss on my forehead. "Don't worry."

"Be careful!" I said, concerned and hugged him tightly, breathing in his scent. He hugged me back and kissed my hair.

"Thank you for being in my life, Lottie. You are my escape. I don't want to lose you." He stated honestly.

I pulled back slightly, feeling emotional after his confession, and brushed my lips against his lips, showing my feelings to him with this kiss. He tightened his grip around me and deepened the kiss. In a swift movement, Nathan lifted me up, still kissing me passionately, and carried me towards the bedroom.

***

When I was leaving the agency to have lunch, one of Nathan's bodyguards which I saw yesterday approached me.

"Hello, Ms. Wright. I am Thomas Brown." He greeted me politely.

"Hello. Where is Nathan?" I asked curiously and looked around, searching for Nathan.

"Mr. Carter isn't here. However, he ordered me to take care of your security." He replied firmly.

I looked at him, dumbfounded; Nathan didn't tell me anything about it. And why did he think I needed a bodyguard? It was Nathan who was in danger, not me. Moreover, he sent this man to follow me without my permission. Besides, I didn't like to go everywhere with a bodyguard. One time when I had a crazy stalker, my father ordered a bodyguard to keep an eye on me, but I refused, saying I didn't need anyone to follow me like a shadow. Fortunately, the police found the stalker soon, and my father stopped insisting.

I frowned and asked. "Is he in the hotel?"

"Yes, Miss."

"Fine. Then we are going there; I have to talk to him about his surprise urgently." I commented, annoyed and breathed deeply, ruffling my hair.

"I am sorry, but you can't visit him without his permission." The man said nonchalantly and gave me an apologetic look.

"What?!" I exclaimed in shock.

"If you give me your car key, I will take you where you planned to go before seeing me, Miss." He said politely, extending his hand towards me.

I gave him my key and walked towards my car angrily while trying to find my phone in my bag.

After I got in my car, he closed the door for me and rushed towards the driver's side. Once I pulled my phone out of my bag, I called Nathan while I was shaking with anger.

How dare he forbid me to visit him!

Was it some kind of breakup or what?!

"What is going on, Nathan?" I snapped, frustrated as soon as he picked up his phone.

He breathed deeply before replying. "Calm down, Lottie. It is for your safety."

"Really? Are you protecting me from yourself as well now?" I mocked while trying to calm down as much as possible.

"Somehow." He mumbled and heaved a loud sigh.

"Nathan Carter!" I warned him furiously. "Tell your bodyguard to take me to you now. Otherwise, I know what I will do." I stated in an authoritative tone and extended the phone to the poor bodyguard. I knew I looked like a spoiled rich bitch, but I didn't care. I was holding myself hard; I was so angry at Nathan.

Thomas took the phone with an expression which made me think he felt sorry for Nathan. I ignored it and waited for Nathan to order him to take me to him.

"Yes, sir." He replied firmly after listening to Nathan and gave me my phone back. "He wants to talk to you."

As soon as I took the phone, Thomas started the car. I smiled self-satisfied; finally, I was going to see Nathan and ask for an explanation.

"See..."

"Charlotte, wait for me in your penthouse. I will visit you this evening. And please don't leave home today."  He stated in a bossy tone and hung up without letting me say anything.

I looked at my phone in shock.

Are you kidding me?!

He even hung up on my face!

I gritted my teeth in irritation and ruffled my hair angrily. I held my phone tightly while my body trembled with fury.

Calm down, Charlotte!

Just be patient! If you don't like his explanation, you can strangle him after that. And if he doesn't come to see me today, he will be in trouble.
