Hypothermia

Pre lightning. Barry is 16.

Come with me to the party!

She said.

It'll be fun!

She said.

You'll finally get yourself out there!

She said.

I scoffed.

Iris had dragged me to a party, despite how much I protested. Joe didn't know. We were being rebellious. Oh goody.

It had started out fine enough.

Iris drove us to the house. We got inside. Iris ditched me. I was alone in a corner. All was well.

Then, when it seemed like everyone was drunk, people started to pester me.

All of them were trying to get me to drink something.

Join the party!

They said.

Come on! Live a little man!

They said.

Don't be a loser!

They said.

Well, jokes on you, I like being a loser.

At one point, a guy came up to me and asked me to get him some more beer. He was cheerful enough, but when I said "no", he got angry. Of course he was a happy-angry drunk.

So I reluctantly walked to where he said the drinks were.

They were kept in a massive freezer/fridge. I walked in, but didn't see any drinks. I turned to walk out, but the door slammed in my face and I heard the lock click.

Oh no no no no no.

I banged on the door.

"Let me out!" I shouted.

I watched the drunk jerks walk away laughing. One stopped and walked back though. I hoped he was going to be decent enough to let me out, but that wasn't the case at all. He pressed something by the door, and I felt the temperature plummet.

Oh no.

I banged on the door harder.

"Help! Someone help me!"

So that's how I ended up in a freezer, freezing. I had long ago lost the energy to bang on the door, and I had lost hope that anyone would come down anytime soon. It was so cold.

Iris probably thought I went home.

I was going to die here. In the cold.

I was sure of it.

I took in a shuddering breath. It hurt. It was so cold.

The cold seeped into my bones.

It certainly didn't help that I was only wearing jeans and a T-shirt.

I cursed my luck.

In my head, since my lips were numb and I couldn't really talk anymore.

I saw figures moving outside the door.

"Help." I whispered. "Let me out."

I was so tired. And cold.

But I wasn't shivering as violently as I was earlier.

"Please."

I figured they wouldn't hear me, but then I saw someone peek through the window and gasp. I heard the click of the lock and two people rushed in.

"Hey hey, keep your eyes open," a girl's voice said.

I felt them each carry an arm and drag me out of that god forsaken freezer.

"Cisco, go find as many blankets as you can. Fast." The girl said.

In the light, I could see that she had light brownish-reddish hair, and warm brown eyes.

"Hey, you need to stay awake," she told me. "What's your name?"

"Barry," I whispered.

"Hi Barry, I'm Caitlin."

I nodded and started to shut my eyes again. I was so tired. And so cold.

"No! Stay awake Barry!" Caitlin yelled. "Cisco where are you?" I heard footsteps and Caitlin's relived sigh. "Oh thank god."

I felt something wrap around me, but I honestly couldn't tell.

"He's got hypothermia, Cisco, you need to call an ambulance."

Why do we need an ambulance? I wonder who got hurt. I'm really tired.

I faintly heard Caitlin telling me to stay awake. But my eyes shut and I drifted into the darkness.

What was that?

It sounds familiar...

Oh! It's a heart monitor.

Wait...

A heart monitor? Why am I hooked up to a heart monitor? What happened?

I opened my eyes and was met with the hash hospital lights. I let out a groan.

"Mr. Allen," someone said, "You're awake. Welcome back."

Welcome back? Where did I go?

"You were out for quite a while." she said.

What?

Seriously, why won't she just tell me what's happened? Why does she keep dancing around the point?

I finally managed to croak out a few words, "Wha' ha'ened?"

"Some kids called and said you had a severe case of hypothermia. They said you had been locked in a freezer, but they didn't know how long."

Now I remember what happened.

Iris dragged me to a party and I got locked in a freezer and nearly died. But I did meet.... what were their names... Caitlin and Cisco? Right? I think that's right.

"I'm going to let your family know that you're awake." She said.

A few minutes later, I was swarmed by Iris and Joe.

"Barry!" Iris said. I winced at the loud noise and Iris bowed her head. "Sorry."

"You scared the hell outta me kid," Joe said, stroking my hair.

"How lon'." I asked.

"One week," Joe said.

My eyes widened. I was unconscious for a whole week! But I had a chemistry test on Wednesday! That... probably didn't matter anymore.

"I'm sorry Barry," Iris said, "I'm sorry I dragged you to that stupid party."

"It's fine." I said.

A little later, two people appeared at the door to my room. I recognized the girl almost immediately. It was Caitlin. Which probably made the boy next to her Cisco.

I smiled at them, "Hi."

Caitlin gave a small wave, "Hi. I don't know if you remember..."

I smiled, "You guys saved me. Thanks."

They smiled and sat next to my bed.

"It's nice to meet you while I'm not dying," I said. "Please remind me to never go to a party ever again."

Cisco smiled, "Was that your first one?"

"Yeah," I said, "And I hated every second of it. What about you guys?"

"We only went because my brother insisted upon it." Cisco said.

"Yeah," Caitlin said, "I'm just glad I got lost while trying to find the bathroom."

"Me too." I agreed. "Hey, when I'm out of here, we should get together and hang out."

"That's a good idea." Cisco said.

"Yes. And something tells me you're accident prone and will need someone to keep an eye on you." Caitlin commented.

I chuckled.

At least one good thing came from that party.
