It Looks Alright

May 7, 2013: Memory Lane Tour; Brighton, England

"Hey guys?" I asked, walking into the McFly dressing room. "What's Pudd?"

All the boys instantly start laughing.

"What? What's so funny?" I ask.

"Where did you hear about Pudd Miss Flip-Phone?" Harry asks.

"Some fans were holding up a sign. I was almost tempted to ask if they were at the right concert."

"Pudd is Harry and Dougie's ship name." Tom laughs.

"Ship?" I ask.

"Yeah. Like they're shipping us." Dougie says. I look at him confused.

"Shipping you where?" I ask. All the boys start to laugh again.

"No, no." Tom laughs. "Like a relationship."

"Pudd." Danny says. "You know? It stands for Poynter and Judd mashed together."

"Wait...you're telling me fans want Dougie and Harry to date?" I ask. I knew that Harry loved hugging and kissing Dougie but...for them to actually date?

"Are you saying Dougie wouldn't want all this?" Harry raises his eyebrows and points to himself.

"You're married." I say.

"I don't reckon they actually think they're going to date." Tom laughs. "Although, I doubt they'd be upset about it. It's just for fun."

"Oh."

"There are tons of them." Dougie adds.

"Tons of what?" I ask.

"Ship names." He continues. "Like Flones, Floynter, Fludd, although that one's not as popular-"

"Woah, slow down. Flones?" I ask.

"Fletcher and Jones." Tom says.

"Floynter...Fletcher and Poynter." I say, putting the pieces together.

"Look at that, she's catching on!" Harry laughs.

"You could even have ship names with us." Tom shrugs.

"Woah, you guys are all in relationships. And I like the McWags. I don't want any of them to hate me."

"It's just for fun. Nothing serious." Tom smiles.

"Wait-" Danny interrupts. "McWags?"

"Yeah, you know. Gi, Georgia, Izzy and Lara. McWags. Mc-wives-and-girlfriends." I say.

"I quite like that." Danny smiles.

"So sad you can't be in that crew anymore." Harry sighs.

"Hey! I'll always be an honorary McWag." I say.

"The original McWag." Tom smiles.

"Well...technically that would be Gi...because she dated you before I dated Dougie and-"

"Lilly I'm trying to give you a compliment." Tom says. I laugh.

"Sorry." I smile.

"Fletch was looking for you, by the way." Dougie adds.

"Why didn't you let me know earlier?" I ask. He shrugs.

"Just waiting for the right time."

"Right." I say, confused.

"I think he's back stage."

"Okay. I'll be on that. You lads have fun being boyfriends or...whatever." I say.

**********************

I had been running backstage like a chicken with it's head cut off for fifteen minutes before I gave up and decided to ask someone where Fletch was.

"Excuse me?" I say, tapping a large security guard on the shoulder. He turned around. I hadn't met him before. "Hi...are you new?" I ask.

"No. I've been working for McFly for seven years." He says monotonously.

"Oh...well...I'm Lilly." I smile, extending my hand out to him.

"I know." He says, not taking my hand. I laugh nervously and wipe it on my pants.

"Um...do you have a name?" I ask. Do you have a name? What kind of a question is that?

"Frank." He says.

"Okay. Well I'm looking for Fletch...have you seen him?"

"Yes." Frank nods. And then he stops. I raise my eyebrows.

"Do you mind telling me where?" I ask.

"Just round the lighting booth. Go out that door, down the stairs and through the door on the right on the last level."

"Thanks Frank." I say before running off.

When I get to the stair case to the bottom level, I turn the corner and instantly bang into someone. It actually hurt pretty bad.

"Ow." He moans.

"Oh sorry I-" I start, but then I stop.

He's wearing cargo shorts, a graphic T-shirt and he's got an acoustic guitar strapped around him and his hand is holding his head with his golden curls are swept to the side.

"James?" I ask. "Oh my god!" He laughs and we hug each other. "What are you doing here? Are you here to see the boys?"

"No...well kind of...I'm opening." He smiles. "Playing some Busted songs. Dusting off my performing gears."

"I can't believe you're here!"

"I know...it's been so long. We really need to be better at keeping in touch." He says, furrowing his brows.

"Well, I've got really go to go see Fletch, but I'll see you after?" I smile, patting his shoulders quickly.

"Yeah, totally."

************************************************

When I come back out from speaking with Fletch and the lighting crew, James isn't anywhere to be seen, but he can be heard strumming his guitar.

Reaching out

To touch a stranger

"Oh what a good song!" I hear Danny say, as I peer around the corner. Tom is there too, holding the camera.

Electric eyes are everywhere

See that girl

She knows I'm watching

She likes the way I stare.

If they say-

Him, Danny and Tom start to harmonize together.

Why, why?

Tell 'em that it's human nature

Why, why,

Does he do me that way?

if they say

Why, why?

Tell 'em that it's human nature

Why, why,

Does he do me that way?

Just then, Fletch walks past me towards James. Uh oh...

"Hey Mate." Danny calls from the top of the stairs.

"Hey, did you guys not notice Lilly?" Fletch asks, outing me. I sigh, and smile, stepping out from behind the corner slowly. I smile anxiously.

"No we didn't." Tom smiles skeptically. "Were you watching us?"

"No, actually...I was listening to you." I say. James laughs. "You guys sound great together. You should write some songs or something."

"Uh, yeah, we kind of already have, Lilly." Danny laughs.

"No, I mean...you guys should perform them together." I say. They all look at each other and James shrugs.

"Eh...maybe one day." He says.

****************************

I was standing offstage with Tom and Dougie, while Danny and Harry stood on the other side waiting until James was done. He had already performed three other songs, and now it was time for his last one.

"So." James starts. "I want to thank McFly-" The crowd starts to cheer, "for having me up here. We've been writing songs together again and uh...they're coming out quite good." He laughs nervously, and then begins to strum his guitar. I look over at Tom.

"I didn't know that." I whisper. He nods.

"He's helping us with some stuff for album six."

I look back over to the stage and James starts to sing, and as soon as he does, the screams grow even louder.

One day,

when I came home

At lunch time

I heard a funny noise

Went out,

To the backyard-

He stops, and all the fans continue for him.

To find out

If it was one of those ratty boys

Stood there, was my neighbor

Called Peter

and a flux capacitor

James jumps around, and returns to his microphone, joining in with all the fans that are still singing.

He told me he built a time machine

Like one in a film I've seen

Yeah

He said "I've been to the year 3000"

He lets the fans sing again.

Not much has changed, but they live underwater

And your great, great, great granddaughter

Is pretty fine

"That's amazing." I smile, looking at the stage. It was clear to us now, that Busted fans and McFly fans weren't rivals...they were the same people.

"Tell me about it." Dougie whispers.
