8 ❋

We were about to reach my apartment, when I heard small chirps coming from an alleyway. "Stop," I said, holding my arms out.

"What's wron-" he began, but I shushed him and ducked into the alleyway. The chirps were coming from underneath a small shoe box.

As I lifted it slightly, I saw a baby sparrow with what seemed to be a broken wing. I hate seeing wounded animals.

Without hesitation I picked the bird up and held it close to my chest. It was shaking and cold to the touch, letting out small, weak chirps.

"Aw, poor little guy," Hawks said looking over my shoulder, "I know a vet nearby, I think it's best we take him there." I just nodded, still keeping my eyes on the baby bird.

My mother loved animals way more than I did, and she would always foster any animal that needed help. I can't just leave a hurt baby bird knowing my mother would've taken care of it herself if she were here.

It started getting colder, so I wrapped my wings around my body trying to shield the bird from any gusts of wind. Hawks had done the same, putting his wings around us, which made the baby bird stop shaking a bit.

We reached the vet and dropped him off, though I didn't want to leave it, Hawks forced me out. I sighed and started walking back to my apartment.

"It'll be okay, nothing can hurt it anymore and you can come see it tomorrow. I'll even bring you myself," he reassured me. I just huffed and nodded.

"How's your wrist doing?" he asked. "Fine," I said, still hung up about the baby bird. I heard him let out a deep sigh. To be honest, I had forgotten about my wrist until he mentioned it.

We reached my apartment and even though I insisted it was fine, he still walked me all the way to my door. "Welp, I'll see you tomorrow Angel," he said before turning and walking away.

We had made plans to go and check on the bird the next day and that he'd pick me up. I wasn't sure but I guess it'd be nice to have someone other than May around.

Don't get me wrong she's an amazing friend and I love her, but I've only ever hung out with her. Everyone else I've hung out with were usually Mays friends that had tagged along.

Not to mention he's a hero, which makes it ten times more interesting because he tells stories about all the villains he's fought.

I took a deep breath in and get ready for bed. While getting my towel for a shower, I passed my mirror. My wings looked huge compared to me.

I don't know why, but his words stuck with me. When he spoke, he sounded genuine. Like he knew what it felt like. He was also right, my mom wouldn't want me to hate my wings.

I hadn't realized it but I smiled in the mirror at the thought of my mom. Maybe I'll start keeping my wings out.

The next morning, I woke up to the sound of sizzling on the stove. What the hell is that sound. I was sure May wasn't here because she had too many drinks last night and was sure to have a hangover.

I walked out in my pjs, wings out and open, ready to attack or fly away. "Oh, you're up, I'm making eggs and bacon. Pancakes are done over there," Hawks said, not turning around.

I stood there in awe. How did he get in? He looked over and saw I was still staring at him. "What? Not hungry?" he asked. "That's not- How did you even get in?" I asked.

"Oh the door was unlocked. I came to pick you up, but you were still asleep, so I left myself in." Did I forget to lock the door? I must've been so tired. I sighed and walked over to the pancakes. It seems like I'm gonna be stuck with him.

After breakfast we had flown to the vet we had dropped the baby bird off at last night. They said he had a broken wing, but that they could fix it and release him in a forest nearby.

Hawks made sure that we were to be notified when they were going to move him. "What now?" Hawks asked. I looked at him then looked around.

"You can go home if you want now, I'll just head back to my apartment," I said then started walking towards it. Before I could even take 5 more steps, I felt a hand grab my shoulder.

"I don't think so, from what your friend May told me, you're too much of an introvert, so we're gonna spend the day having fun," he stated with a big smirk on his face.

I've spent enough time with him to know that when he says he's gonna do something, he's gonna do it. I sighed and frowned.

"Oh c'mon! It'll be fun! Besides, I kinda took the whole day off soooo..." I glared at him and then groaned. If I go back to my apartment now, I'll feel bad for making him take the day off.

I rolled my eyes and he smiled, then took my hand and and flew up. It caught me by surprise so it took me a minute to finally start flapping my wings and fly on my own.

"Hawks, where are we going," I asked, flying beside him. "Call me Keigo," he began, "you'll see when we get there." I groaned in annoyance again. I hate surprises.

Moments later, he started diving down towards a big dome building. When we landed, he told me to make sure to keep my wings out. Where were we? I couldn't see any signs.

Out of nowhere, a man appeared, greeted both of us, gave him a brown bag, then left and disappeared. He then dragged me inside.

As we walked in, I heard all different kinds of sounds and saw big trees and plants. "Welcome," he said walking backwards in front of me, holding his arms out, "to my very own bird sanctuary."

My eyes widened at his words. His? He owns this place? The view when walking in was so pretty. It was like it was out of a movie. All I could do was stare in awe, and take in everything I could.

I heard him laugh lightly and looked at him. He was watching me look around. "This is where I made sure that baby bird would end up."

My eyes widened once more, "The baby sparrow we found in the alley?" He nodded and I could feel my smile go across my entire face. This was like heaven.

He told me to follow him and we went to the middle of the area. Keigo whistled and suddenly a big hawk swooped down and landed on his sleeve. "Meet Titan," he said while petting the big bird.

I just admired the Harris Hawk. It looked so beautiful. "Here," Keigo said, moving his arm closer to me. Without hesitation I held my arm out for the bird to climb on. "He doesn't like getting on other people besides me, so I guess he must really like you," he exclaimed.

For the rest of the morning, Keigo took me around the sanctuary to meet all kinds of birds. My favorites were the White Doves and they recently got new ones. Keigo swore he was going to name one Angel, just to tease me.

After he showed me around the sanctuary we went to eat some lunch at a hero restaurant nearby. "Did you enjoy it?" he asked. "The sanctuary? Of course," I replied.

He just smiled softly and ordered our food. "So, what agency do you work for? I noticed the first tome we met you had a hero suit on," he said.

"Oh, I don't work for any agency, I just do my own thing." He looked down at his lap and started picking at his jeans, "Well, do you wanna join one?" he asked hesitantly.

I sat and thought about it for a second. Do I? Joining an agency would bring attention which I don't want but could get me a better suit and resources to help save more people.

"Depends, why?" I finally answered. "Well, I happen to need an assistant or maybe even a sidekick, and you seem like a good candidate," he said, taking a sip of his drink.

So that's why he was being nice today. "No thanks." He seemed surprised, "What? Why not?" he pouted. "Too much attention," I said plainly.

He scoffed, "You're already getting a lot anyways. Besides, becoming my assistant comes with some advantages," he said. I sighed and thought about it again, I do need better equipment and my suit is kinda old.

I glanced at Keigo, who was on the edge of his seat and leaning towards me, waiting for my answer. "I'll think about it," I said. He got excited and started telling me about what would happen if I did accept. I swear, sometimes this man is like a puppy.

(A/N: yo, sorry this chapter was boring but if you couldn't tell, i've hit writers block. i also just wanted to have a chapter where they hung out and got to know each other. i'm having trouble figuring out how to build up to what i want to happen but for now enjoy my bad writing until i figure it out. i also happened to notice i hit 100+ reads.. um- that's insane. it might not seem like a lot to you but it is to me, so i wanted to say thank you so much and as always thanks for reading!)
