gwen was in the hospital extremely early today because of two reasons.

1. she had to do rounds on arizona's friend, nick.
and 2. she didn't want to look or talk to mark.

"so, this patch here is your tumor." cristina explains to nick pointing at it on the scans. "it's invading the wall of your right ventricle. what we'll do is, we'll resect the tumor, then repair the ventricle, and replace the tricuspid valve."

"dr.yang is the best we have. you couldn't be in better hands." gwen assures the patient.

"come on. where is she?" nick asks gwen out of nowhere.

"arizona? she's... um... patients. so many patients." gwen stutterts.

"so, basically, you all want to chop up my heart into a jigsaw puzzle." nick realizes. "it may give me a few more months, most of which, i'll be spending in a hospital bed, while my best friend in the world does everthing possible to avoid me? or, i spend the rest of my short life lying on a sandy beach in belize."

"nick, you need this surgery." gwen reminds him knowing what he implies.

"tell scottsdale i said goodbye. looks like i won't get the chance." nick says.

gwen stood at the nurses station when mark approached her.

"hey! there you are. i missed you this morning." mark greets her.

"i had to go to the hospital early." gwen states not looking up from her chart. "something you want?"

"yeah, since we both head to boise i wanted to ask who watches hailey?" mark asks.

"callie takes her." gwen simply replies.

"please, gwen. look at me when we talk." mark begs but gwen ignored it. "i'm sorry okay? for smashing your idea of a second baby down."

"okay." gwen nods.

mark sighs as he walked away.

derek stood in an elevator alone when the door opened and mark entered.

"how's gwen? you impregnate her yet?" derek asks.

"no, gwen and i had a big fight yesterday." mark sighs.

"what was it about?" derek asks.

"she is pissed that i smashed her idea of a second baby down. she called me egoistic." mark informs him. "i had to sleep on the couch."

"oh." derek simply says. "did you apologized?"

"yeah, but she's still mad." mark says.

"what did you say?" derek asks.

"i'm sorry." mark repeats what he told gwen.

"i'm sorry? that's all?" derek raises his brows.

"what was i supposed to do?"

"oh, i don't know. kiss her." derek suggested.

"you know if i had did that i would earn a big slap to my face." mark says making him chuckle.

"true."

gwen searched for arizona trying to get her to convince nick to the surgery. she found the blond in the nursery checking on a baby.

"aww. look at that. she's cute." gwen says looking down at the baby. "it's so nice in here with all these cute babies. i kinda miss it."

"yeah." arizona smiles agreeing with gwen.

"and is she dying, like, right now?" gwen asks suddenly very serious. "cause nick is. remember nick, your brother's best friend, your rock, who is right now packing up and bailing on a surgery that he needs to live because you can't get your stubborn head out of your ass and let go of the fact that he didn't come to you sooner?"

"gwen, i-"

"no, i don't get it." gwen cuts her off. "we watch babies die every day. when things looked bad for callie you didn't leave her side. and now your best friend's asking for you. look, you need to get your crap together before he leaves, because if he goes now, he is gone."

arizona looked at her when gwen averted her gaze to the baby again.

"she's not actually dying, is she?" gwen asks worried.

"no." arizona shoke her head.

"okay, good." then gwen walked away.

after arizona convinced nick to do the surgery gwen and cristina stood in the scrub room washing hands.

"okay, dealer's choice. do you want to do the ventriculoplasty, or resect the tumor, or do you want to be primary surgeon?" gwen asks the resident.

"fine." cristina shrugs.

"fine? okay, what's going on? are you staying? are you going?" gwen asks. "cause it's driving me crazy. i don't... if it has to do with owen, whatever it is, i am sure the two of you can fix it."

cristina stood silent before speaking again. "i'll take all of it."

"what?" gwen asks.

"all of it. the ventriculoplasty and as much of the tumor as you'll let me do." cristina informs her. "thank you. it's very generous. i'll see you in there."

"all right, temp's down to 30 degrees." gwen announces in the o.r.

"cross-clamping the aorta." cristina says.

"all right. let's see what we're working with." gwen looked at the scans eyes widen. "damn it. this wasn't in the scans."

"the tumor's infiltrated much deeper into the ventricle." cristina adds.

"reconstructive ventriculoplasty isn't gonna cut it." gwen sighs.

"we could do a fontan?" cristina suggests. "directly sew the right atrium to the pulmonary artery. we could patch whatever is left."

"that would help with blood flow, but the hole in the resection would..."

"yeah. he'd arrest right on the table." cristina nods. "we could do an rv to a pa conduit."

"no, the thing would calcify. it would kill him." gwen retorts. "a cadavar homograft?"

"the hole would be way too big. it's instant heart failure." cristina says.

"they don't know what to do, callie." arizona sighs sitting with her wife in the gallery. "they have no idea."

"no, it's gwen and cristina, okay?" callie reminds her. "they'll figure something out. they're gonna figure something out. come on, guys. come on."

meanwhile gwen and cristina looked each other in the eyes trying desperately to figure something out.

mark saw gwen standing outside the hospital in the rain later that day. he took a blanket and run over to her.

"hey. what are you doing here? you get sick." mark puts the blanket over her shoulders knowing that it probably won't help at all.

"don't ever leave." gwen blurts turning around.

"what?" mark furrows his brows.

"don't ever leave." gwen repeats sobbing. "promise me that right now."

"i'm not going anywhere. i promise." mark assures her kissing her forehead.

"after our babies, i though, i can't do this ever again. i won't do this again. and now i am standing here talking to you about our second child." gwen sobs.

"okay, whatever you can't do, i will." mark assures her his hands on her shoulders. "i'm here, gwen. and that's how this works, okay? come here."

he hugged her long stroking her back.

"i'm not mad at you i'm just confused." gwen sobs. "i'm sorry for acting like this."

"you don't have to apologize baby." mark whispers to her.

after drying herself gwen stood with mark at the nurses station ready to go to the plane.

"so hailey, you're gonna spend a great weekend with aunty callie. okay?" gwen tells her daughter. "i don't want to leave her."

"it's okay. she's gonna spend her time with me. it will be awesome. right, hailey?" callie took her goddaughter.

"we will be right back." mark kisses her daughters forehead.

"yeah, and we will miss you." gwen adds also kissing hailey cheek.

"yeah, yeah. now say goodbye hailey. by mommy. bye daddy." callie took hailey's tiny hand to wave her parents.

gwen sat next to mark in the plane looking outside the window when he took her hand.

"i think about a boy for our next child." mark blurts making her look at him.

"yeah?" she asks as he nods. "i think it's gonna be another girl."

"we could name him mark jr." mark says making gwen chuckles.

"that sounds terrible." gwen dismisses him.

"hey, it's still my name." mark reminds her offended. "i love you." mark smiles.

"i love you too."

right when they wanted to kiss gwen slipped out of mark's hand being sucked out of the plane.

"gwen!" he yells.

the last thing he saw was gwen's horrified expression before everything went dark.
