one hundred eighty three

rubbing her eyes with a yawn, gwen walked down the hallway together with meredith and callie. it was too early for her.

she had a wild night. mark came home after his trip to the military hospital and gwen was still a little pissed at this dr.vaughn for flirting with her husband.

gwen did what she had to do and marked her territory. mark liked that of course.

"it's not unusual for women flirting with him. i mean just look at him." gwen tells the two. "i would flirt with him too if i'd seen him somewhere."

"gwen, just let it go. mark has changed. he's not the man-whore anymore from back then." meredith tries to cheer her sister up.

"i know. why do i still get jealous? i'm rarely jealous." gwen asks herself.

"dr.shepherd, i was told to report to-"

"did you see the scans?" meredith asks callie totally ignoring jo who just walked up to them.

"yeah, i'm sorry i'm late. i just got off the phone with bauer medical." callie apologises putting her phone away. "they said that carson's recovering well and his incision sites and flaps are doing great."

"that is great news." gwen smiles at the two knowing what big of a success that is for them.

"yeah, dr.thorpe thought so, too. he also thought you might've given him the wrong number." callie adds as they arrived at the surgical floor.

"thorpe? who is thorpe?" gwen asks confused. mark didn't say anything about this guy, neither meredith and him exchanging numbers.

"he has the right number." meredith replies.

"well, okay, so you're just gonna what, ignore his calls?" callie asks.

"wait. will someone please tell me what is going on and who he is?" gwen asks the two.

"meredith exchanged numbers with a hot military surgeon over at bauer." callie explains her. "he says he called, but radio silence."

"what?" gwen asks.

"it's nothing." meredith shrugs.

"why wouldn't you tell me this?" gwen asks suprised.

"because it's nothing." meredith repeats.

then jo who stood near them all the time sat herself next to gwen who was putting the blue protectors over her shoes.

"wilson, are you following me?" gwen asks her.

"i'm with you today. i'm on your service." jo explains.

"i thought blake was with me." gwen says confused. not she minds having jo on her service instead.

"no, actually, all of the residents were switched." jo explains.

"all right, well do you know anything about this patient?" gwen asks but jo shakes her head. "then find something out."

jo walks away getting the chart before gwen turns around to the other two.

"so, how hot is hot?" gwen asks.

"we have surgery." meredith says standing up to leave.

"hot." callie tells her friend who started smirking.

"i thought it'd be weird, you know, the small talk, the eye contact, the polite eating, but really, it wasn't. i mean, she was nice." jackson tells mark as the treated a kid's burns. after the divorce jackson went on dates again and mark is the only person he felt like that could give him useful advice. "it was nice."

"so you're getting out there, huh?" mark asks.

"i don't know about that. i mean, it was sudden, but yeah, it was a date." jackson says.

"does kepner know about it?" mark asks looking up from the arm he debrided.

"no. no, and do not tell her, okay?" jackson begs mark.

"sure. whatever." mark nods understanding.

"i mean, i'm not lying, you know? i just don't want her to hear it from someone else. i mean, i'll tell her, you know, when the time is right." jackson says.

"we all hear the dogs, right?" stephanie asks walking into the room. "there are dogs somewhere?"

"once a month, a rescue group brings in a bunch of puppies for the kids. it's good for morale and healing and stuff." mark explains to her.

he knows this because gwen just loves dogs especially puppies. everytime they get here gwen would spend her whole day between these little ones.

"no." stephanie shakes her head.

"what's the matter?" jackson asks.

"okay, i'm on peds today. no." stephanie says.

"hope you like dogs." mark chuckles.

gwen was looking over the babies in the nicu while updating the charts. she loved being around those little toddlers who smiled all the time and always get excited when they see their parents.

gwen rub a baby's belly looking if she has pain while doing when mark walked up to her.

"morning to my beautiful wife." he greets a cup of coffee for her in his hands.

"good morning." gwen greets him back while still looking at the tiny thing under her hands.

"i just wanted to come by to bring you coffee to thank you for last night." mark smirks having flashbacks. he knows gwen isn't the jealous type of woman, but when she get's it's hot.

"you didn't have to." gwen smiles looking up taking the cup.

gwen never felt insecure with their relationship nor doubt it one bit. but yesterday only hearing that woman on the phone made her blood boil.

"maybe it were the hormones." gwen said walking over to the next baby.

"gwen we're together for so long now. i would never even look at another woman the way i look at you." mark assures taking her hand. "but the jealous thing is hot. i should let other woman flirt with me more often."

"do that and i'll make your life hell." gwen smiles at him to which he smirks.

"april doesn't want to test her baby." arizona suddenly said from besides gwen causing her to flinch. arizona knew that gwen had figured out by now that april is pregnant. they both work in peds after all.

"arizona." she curses. "april what?"

"she doesn't want to test her baby. not for o.i. or for anything else." arizona said after just talking to the redhead.

"why?" mark asks.

"she said, because my baby's fine!" arizona replies.

"o.i. can be diagnosed early. why wouldn't she take the test? that's crazy." gwen furrows her brows.

"i know." arizona nods.

"well, then avery will have to convince her." mark says.

"she won't tell him. i don't know what to do." arizona sighs.

"well, i'm not doing this. i'm not lying to my friend." mark tells them not wanting to have secrets from jackson.

"no one's asking you to lie." gwen calms him down.

"i say, pass me the coffee, and i feel like i'm lying to him." mark tells his wife.

"do you think i like lying to him?" gwen asks him.

"well, then, we need to talk to her." arizona suggests.

"we?" gwen asks. "no, you will not make it seem like i betrayed a pregnant woman. and mark will neither." gwen tells her not wanting mark or her involved in this mess. she won't expose april, she won't tell jackson. that's it.

"fine. i will talk to her." arizona sighs walking away.

"so, what kind of surgeon is he?" gwen asks meredith with a smirk under her mask.

"oncology." callie replies.

"we can work with that." gwen shrugs.

"guessing 40s. kind of tall. and he's ranked in the military, so he has an authoritative side." callie describes the mysterious man.

"i can hear you." meredith interjects.

"but you can't hear the phone ringing." callie says.

"maybe her ringer's off." gwen guesses.

"it's not." meredith tells her. "suctioning."

"sometimes your ringer is off, and it's been off for so long that you forget that it's off, and you need someone to help you figure out how to turn it back on." gwen says. "but once it's on..."

"oh, that's it." callie chuckles. "your ringer needs to be turned on. you've been on vibrate for too long."

"ugh. shut up. if i answer, then he'll ask me out. and then i'll have to say no, and there will be a lot of back and forth, and i won't know when it's okay to hang up, so why answer?" meredith explains as jo walks into the o.r.

"dr.shepherd, i saw all your clinic patients. can i scrub in?" jo asks excited.

"did you check up on the kurtzmann's baby?" gwen asks looking at the resident.

"no." jo replies.

"would you do that for me, wilson?" gwen asks. "you can scrub in later. i have another surgery after this."

"thank you." jo smiles walking away.

gwen got a 911 page from arizona to a fetal case. she ran down the o.r. hall to be meet with bailey, ben and jo.

"how could she not know she was birthing a baby?" bailey asks ben.

"it's a quad at 23 weeks. he's about the size of your hand." gwen answers having a lot of quad births in her career.

"quads. going from one litter to another. peds is weird." jo comments prefering ortho.

"we'll need at least two full nicu teams down here for the transport." gwen tells the chief.

"okay." bailey nods.

"i need warmers and neonatal resuscitation trays, and if you don't have to be in here, get out." gwen instructs in a loud tone storming into the o.r. "it's about to get crowded. hi, courtney. my name's dr.shepherd." gwen walks over to the patient.

"you're the out guy. we met you during our tour of the nicu." courtney recognized gwen. gwen was plan b taking the babies out if there were complications.

"i am, and i can assure you, we're gonna do everything-"

"no, no, no. don't you talk to me. dr.robbins talks to me. dr.robbins is the in guy. she's the one. these babies are staying in. dr.robbins is in." courtney panicks. "you're keeping them in, right?"

"it's charles, right?" gwen asks. "courtney, charles already made up his mind. he's partially out, and once he's completely out, they all come out."

"dr.robbins, promise me that they're gonna survive, that they'll live once they're out. all four babies." courtney begs taking her hand.

"i need four umbilical line set-ups." gwen instructs ben.

"warren wait." arizona stops him. "just one."

"i'm sorry." ben asks confused.

"i said one set-up. go!" arizona snaps.

"what's your plan?" gwen asks knowing where this will go.

"i'm stopping the boulder." arizona says as the two walked into the scrub room meeting bailey. "so i'm gonna deliver charles, i'm gonna stop labor, sew up the cervix, and then leave the rest of the three inside for delayed delivery."

"that's impossible." bailey says.

"actually it's not." gwen shakes her head liking arizona's ideas.

"yes. once charles is out, she'll keep having contractions to deliver the placenta. they'll all deliver. it is how it works." bailey says.

"then we don't deliver charles' placenta. after you cut the cord, you sterilize it. we put it back inside, and we put mom on antibiotics." gwen follows arizona's idea.

"do you know how dangerous that is?" bailey asks. "if that placenta stays in it could cause an infection, even sepsis. it puts mom at risk, all three babies at.."

"bailey, we are the fetal surgeons. we know more about this than you do." gwen snaps defending arizona. "we know exactly how they can die."

"have you done this before?" bailey asks arizona.

"no. i don't know that anyone has." arizona says looking at gwen who shoke her head.

"robbins." bailey sighs.

"please stop! stop. i know that you're gonna say no, and i don't want to be in a postition where i go against you. i know that this is a judgement call, but your judgement is not better here. i know what has to be done, and this is the only way that i know how to do it." arizona tells the chief causing gwen to smile proudly.

"okay, what i was going to say.. good luck." bailey says causing arizona to walk back into the o.r. "you think she can do this?"

"she's awesome." gwen assures bailey.

"you'll be in there?" bailey asks.

"no, she won't need me. she's that good." gwen smiles leaving the scrub room.

gwen walked back to meredith and callie who were now looking at their patients post-op scans.

she stood next to meredith who's phone wouldn't stop ringing.

"no significant post-op changes. that's good." meredith smiles.

"yeah." callie nods.

"he's called how many times now?" gwen asks looking at the chart.

"oh, god. just give me the phone." callie groans. "i'll send him a nice blow-off text."

"no, not a text. she is not a monster." gwen shakes her head. "but callie's right, mer. we need a plan."

"we don't need anything." meredith chuckles. "god, between you and wilson..."

"what about wilson?" gwen asks.

"oh, she just tore into me about how i treat her like crap. she really lost it." meredith says after a heated conversation with jo. both attending turned to her with a raised brow. "what?"

"you- you kind of treat wilson like a-like... callie." gwen turns to her friend.

"like a gnat." callie finishes. "you swat her."

"well, that's what we do to residents. i've seen you guys swat. you swat me. we're all hard on residents. we swat." meredith says.

"yeah, but we like them." callie says.

"and we talk to them with a smile on our face." gwen adds.

"yeah, i like wilson." meredith shrugs.

"do you?" gwen asks serious with a raised brow.

meredith just shake her head leaving the two.

"is he stable?" gwen asks arizona who stood in the nicu by charles' bed.

"a little hypotensive, but oxygenating well, which is something for his size, so..., we got all four." arizona replies.

"you got all four. all by yourself, arizona. i'm a proud mentor." gwen smiles. "how's courtney?"

"she's stable. she's back in her room with three fetal heartbeats. it'll be day-to-day to see if it works, but..."

"well, even just a day or two more inside will help the other three." gwen reminds her.

"it was risky." arizona says.

"but fetal surgery is always risky. it's what makes it so special. you made a call, a good call. next time you won't need me to approve to it. follow your instincts because you have good ones." gwen tells her.

"hey, did you talk to kepner?" mark asks arizona who walks up to them already changed into his usual clothes.

"i tried. i just... i don't think that she hears me. we have to do something." arizona replies.

"just don't do anything stupid." gwen says. "you ready?" she asks her husband.

mark nods taking gwen's hand who's saying goodbye to arizona before leaving the blond alone.
