Break Down

I woke up the next morning to my head pounding. I glared up at the man who had woken me up and was now hovering over me.

"I hate you." I mumbled and turned so my back was to him.

"I know but I need to get to the studio and Cara has called you twice already. Get up." He shook me again.

"Why does she keep calling?" I groaned.

"I don't know. It's not like I'm answering your phone everytime it rings." He replied, sounding snarky.

"Who pissed in your cheerios this morning?" I sat up and tried to focus on anything other than the pounding in my head. I threw the comforter off of me and stood up. "God damn." I muttered to myself and put a hand on my head. I looked over at him who had a leather backpack sitting on his side of the bed and he was shoving his laptop into it. "How are you not hungover?" I asked with a frown.

"For starters, you drank more than I did. And I have a headache right now which I'm sure is really going to help me get work done." He shoved a charger in along with it and I just raised my eyebrows at his pissy mood.

"Well do you at least want a ride?" I asked and he looked over at me.

"Only if it's not going to take you an hour to get ready." He zipped the bag up and I rolled my eyes.

"When does it ever take me an hour to get ready? It's not like I get dressed up or wear pounds of makeup." I replied sarcastically. He sat on the end of the bed, clearly ready to go and making sure it was obvious he was waiting on me. He leaned back so he was resting on his elbow on the bed just staring at me.

"You look like you want to kill me." I commented as I pulled a pair of black skinny jeans on. I looked around the closet for a red tank top.

"I just want nothing more than to close my eyes and have this album be done. And a cigarette, I want nothing more than to smoke a cigarette right now." He replied and I growled at the fact that I couldn't find this stupid tank top.

"Can you help me?" I asked but I knew he was going to throw a hissy fit about it. "I can't find this stupid tank top I'm looking for." I stepped back in the closet and looked at everything.

"Can't you just wear something else?" He sounded annoyed but appeared in the doorway anyways. I just pouted and he sighed before turning to look at all my clothes. "What are you looking for?"

I smirked and described to him that it was just a plain red tank top. He started digging through some of the shelves that we had while I went though all the clothes on the hangers again. "This?" He asked pulling it out between two shirts.

"Yes!" I reached for it but he pulled it back so I was grabbing at air. I glared at him but was releaved to finally see him smirking. "Give it." I reached for it again but he pulled it back again.

"Or you could just continue to stand there half naked." He continued to smirk. I wanted nothing more than to roll my eyes and give him shit for acting like a 14 year old boy but I just wrapped my arms around his waist and looked up at him.

"You know, the sooner you give me the shirt, the sooner you can go light up." I teased and grabbed the shirt out of his hand. I pulled it over my head and grabbed a white button up shirt and threw that over it leaving it unbuttoned. I went in the bathroom to finish getting ready. I was in the middle of brushing my teeth when my phone started ringing. I turned to go grab it just as Sonny appeared in the doorway holding it out.

I muttered out a thanks but I doubt it even sounded like English. I saw Cara's name flash across the screen. I answered it and spit into the sink.

"I don't know what that was, but I'm going to assume it's disgusting." She said and I tried not to laugh.

"I'm brushing my teeth." I told her.

"You could have just called me when you were done." She said and I could just picture her annoyed face.

"Yeah, no. You've been calling all morning so clearly I needed to answer right this second. What's up?" I asked and put her on speaker setting the phone on the counter. I started digging around my makeup bag for eye shadow, mascara, and eyeliner. Literally the only makeup I wear. I didn't have the patience to deal with bronzer and all that crap.

I saw Sonny who was still leaning against the doorframe tapping his wrist like an imaginary watch sat there. I just flipped him off and went back to putting mascara on.

"I'm running off of zero sleep and I'm currently an emotional mess." She said and I frowned.

"Do I even want to know why you got no sleep?" I asked.

"That Joel stayed the night here? That's why! And that's why I'm an emotional mess!" She shouted into the phone.

"Why? What'd he do?" I asked, now concerned.

"Can we just talk about this over lunch? I wanted to get breakfast but you decided to be a zombie and sleep until the afternoon."

"Yeah, yeah. I'm about to head out right now. I'll come and pick you up. I'll text you when I'm outside." I hung up and looked at my hair in the mirror. It was frizzy as hell and everywhere. I frowned and threw it up in a messy bun. "Alright, let's go."

"Finally." He pushed himself off the door frame and grabbed his bag off the bed. I grabbed my purse off the kitchen table and grabbed my keys before heading out. I don't know why but I was saddened by the fact that he was going to lock himself away in his studio until some ungodly hour.

"How am I supposed to go a whole day without you?" I pouted and he looked at me with a raised eyebrow. He pulled a cigarette out and had it between his lips. He patted his front pockets before patting his back. "Are you shitting me?" He mumbled. I reached in my purse and pulled out a red plastic lighter. He grabbed it from me and lit the stick of nicotine. He let a puff out and I turned to get in the car but he wrapped an arm around my neck and pulled me into him, kissing my cheek.

I giggled and tried to push him off me but he just kept kissing my cheek. "Stop!" I laughed and pushed him off me.

"You just bitched about not being able to spend the day with me and now you're pushing me off of you." He laughed and took another drag.

"I wasn't bitching! And did I say you could smoke in my car?"

"Bullshit. I've seen you smoke in your car so don't give me shit." He blew smoke in my direction and I pushed him. He just laughed in got in the passenger side. I rolled my eyes with a smile and climbed in. He rolled the window down and blew smoke out.

"So Cara's hotel is on the way. Will you be mad if I swing by and pick her up first?" I asked and he switched his regular glasses to his sunglasses.

"Do I even need to answer that because we both know you're going to pick her up first anyways."

"You're so smart." I snickered and merged into traffic.

"No, I just know you." He reached over and patted my thigh. I was surprised by how fast we made it to Cara's hotel. Sonny climbed out and let Cara sit in the front.

"What a gentelman." Cara smiled at me.

"So what's the drama? I'm dying to know."

"Well for starters mom called me while I was waiting for you. She didn't know I was out here." She looked down at her phone.

"Oh good." I said sarcastically. "What'd she want?"

"She was actually really concerned about you. You should talk to her more often. She thinks you're like secretly depressed because of the whole...well you know."

"Of course. And there goes my good mood." I frowned as we pulled up to a red light.

"Buck up, buttercup." Sonny said from the back seat and I looked back at him and smiled.

"See?" Cara said and I just pushed her head. "Hey!"

We finally made it to the studio and I dropped Sonny off. I drove us to a little cafe with an outdoor seating area since it was nice out.

"So what's the mouse drama?" I asked as I scanned the menu.

"He stayed at my hotel with me last night." She began and I just nodded.

"Like you said." I replied trying to be patient.

"And then he left really really fucking early this morning. He claimed he had to go return the car since it was a friends."

"Okay..." I didnt' really know where this story was going.

"Like, sun was coming up and he was leaving early."

"And that's bad?" I asked confused. We took a break to order and she sighed.

"Yes! That just proves that all I am good for is rebound sex!" She said probably a little too loudly and I suddenly realized why she was so upset.

"Oh!" Was all I could voice.

"I don't want to be just rebound sex! I want...Well I don't know what I want but I know it's not that!" She put her head down for a moment before she sat back up and stared at me like I had all the answers.

"Am I just rebound sex? Is it really obvious to everyone but me?" She pleaded.

"No. If it was I totally would have said something by now. Honestly, the thought of that didn't even cross my mind." I thought back to the time I brought it up to Joel and he just brushed me off but he wasn't rude about it or anything. I couldn't read into anything he said so I really didn't have any answers for you.

"Well you said he was texting you. I don't think guys text the rebound sex girl regularly." I reasoned with her. "I don't think a guy would put that much effort in if all they were looking for was sex."

"I'm not saying all he's looking for is sex. I'm talking like, emotional rebound here." She frowned and I just shook my head.

"I don't even know what you're talking about now." I shrugged.

"Like, he just got dumped, right? So he'd be all bummed and then I come in and he has someone like flirting with him and validating him you know? Like, assuring him that he still has game or something." She kept going on and I was surprised she had put this much thought into it. I was also surprised that what she said kind of made sense.

"I don't really know what to tell you other than the only way to really figure that one out is to just talk to him about it." I told her.

"I can't do that." She frowned.

"Why not? Just call him out on it."

"I'm not like you, Baylee. I don't have the balls to just call him out on his shit." She leaned back in her chair.

"Okay, give me your phone. I'll do it." I held my hand out and she snatched her phone off the table and clutched it to her chest.

"You're bat shit crazy if you think I'm going to let you text him." She glared at me and I started snickering. We talked about guys the rest of lunch and she had the idea to go shopping since there was a string of shops on the street we were on. We walked into the first store and was greeted by some overly chipper girl.

"Maybe I'll just shop my stress away." She said and instantly started looking at shirts on a rack. I noticed a girl folding shirts at a table halfway in the store and she looked incredibly familiar but I couldn't put my finger on it. Nothing was more awkward than someone who knew you but you didn't know them and then you had to pretend that you did.

"If you would just let me look at the text messages I could tell you if I get a rebound vibe or not." I followed her and she grabbed at shirts on the wall now.

"I'm not letting you go through my phone!" She shook her head.

"Come on! I'll let you go through mine." I followed behind her pleading. I was dying to know what her and Joel talked about.

"I'm not going to read you're dirty messages from Sonny." She snorted and I heard the girl that was folding shirts right next to us gasp a little and quickly look down.

"Why do you assume they're dirty?" I laughed, ignoring the weird worker.

"Because it's you we are talking about." She said and i just threw my head back and laughed. I pulled my phone out of my purse and opened the conversation between Sonny and I.

"Actually the last thing we talked about was what time his flight got in. Nothing dirty about that." I snickered and she rolled her eyes and pulled a dress of a new rack.

"Do you like this?" She asked holding it up to her body.

"No." I said honestly and she glared at me. "Dude, don't ask my opinion if you don't want it." I put my hands up in defense. She rolled her eyes and held on to the dress anyways. She had a few things in her hand. She found the nearest worker and asked for a fitting room. I followed her back.

"Please please please will you let me look at your phone? I promise not to make fun of what ever gross things I read!" I told her and she let out a groan and handed me her phone.

"Ahh!" I cheered and jumped a little. I leaned against the wall across from her dressing room and opened up the conversation with Joel. I noticed the weird worker from earlier was in the back messing with a rack of clothes that I'm assuming were things people tried on and didn't like. I couldn't even focus on the gross flirty comments I was reading because I could feel this girls eyes on me.

"What do you think of this? Not with these jeans but what do you think?" Cara opened the door and stepped out for me to see. I looked up from her phone and shrugged.

"Yeah, it's cute." I told her and she walked back in closing the door behind her.

"Excuse me." The worker said and I looked up from the phone. "Are you Baylee?" She asked and wracked my brain trying to think of how the hell I knew this girl.

"Yeah." She turned to face me and I saw her name tag finally.

I felt my eyes widen when I read the name "Emily" on her tag. That's how I knew her!! She was Sonny's ex fucking girlfriend. And she was talking to me! I realized I was just standing here staring at her like an idiot.

"I don't mean to be rude but you're dating Sonny, right?" She said and I was seriously baffled that this was really happening right now.

"Yeah." I responded.

"I'm Emily. I dated him back when he still went by Sonny." She smirked. I nervously laughed.

"Well he still goes by Sonny." I replied awkwardly. It's not like he changed his fucking name or something. "I recognize you though." I said which I probably shouldn't have since I think I was just fueling the fire. Whatever, she had nothing on me. "He wrote that beautiful song about you." I smirked. If she was going to try and make me jealous or something, I wasn't going to let that happen. Besides, he cheated on her so I don't know why she would be trying to make me jealous. I clearly had the upper hand here.

"Yeah, as an apology." She nervously laughed. "Clearly that worked." She muttered.

"Got any embarrassing stories about him?" I asked trying not to laugh at awkward this was.

"None worth repeating." She said a little more quietly.

"How about this?" Cara opened the door and stepped out in the dress I didn't like.

"Well it was nice meeting you." Emily smiled at me and went back to the clothes rack.

"Yeah you too." I blinked and looked back to Cara. "I didn't like it on the rack and I still don't like it on you."

"Bitch." She muttered and I snickered. She closed the door behind her and I went back to reading her conversation.

Nothing I was reading said he was in it just for sex. He was actually very sweet which was mind blowing to me.

She came out and put the dress I didn't like on the rack. "Alright, I'm done in here." She said and went to go pay. I followed behind her and went to go hand her her phone back when it buzzed in my hands.

"Are you free for dinner?" He asked and I squealed. I looked up to see Emily was the one ringing her up.

"What?" She grabbed the phone from me and read it.

"That's not somebody who just wants to hook up." I told her pointing to her phone.

"I don't know." She muttered.

"Like I said, you'll never know if you don't call him out on it." I told her and I watched as Emily put all the clothes in a big bag.

"Have a nice day." She handed the bag to Cara. "And tell Sonny I said hi." She smiled and me and I nodded.

"Will do." I smiled at her and followed Cara out. As soon as we were out on the street she burst into laughter.

"That was so fucking awkward." She laughed.

"You're telling me. I have the greatest luck of running into chicks that are up his ass." I huffed.

We continued to shop for a few more hours before I dropped her back off at her hotel so she could start getting ready for her dinner date with Joel, that she swears isn't a date. It was totally a date.

As soon as I got home, I changed into pajama shorts and took my button up shirt off. I sat on the couch and watched reality trash television for hours on. I was bored out of my mind and slightly dozing off when my phone rang waking me from my daze. I saw Sonny's name flashing across my screen and figured he'd want a ride home. I must have really dozed off because it was almost one in the morning.

"What's up Skrilly?" I answered with a smirk.

"Baylee." I instantly sat up on alert. He almost sounded like he was crying. "Can you get down here?"  He asked but his voice cracked a little.

"Yeah, yeah. Of course. Are you still at the studio?" I asked.

"Yeah." He muttered.

"Okay, I'm on my way. Are you alright?" I asked out of worry.

"Yeah." He muttered again and hung up. I stared down at my phone like it was going to do something before bolting up the stairs to grab some pants. I grabbed the first pair of sweatpants I could find and one of Sonny's Owsla zip ups. I bolted back down the stairs and grabbed my keys and purse before heading out.

It was late so traffic wasn't bad and I made it there in no time. When I got there the door was locked. I had a key on my keychain so I used that to get in. I locked up behind me and it was eerily quiet and too dark for my liking. I headed towards one of the studios that I knew was Sonny's main one in the back.

I used the wall to help guide me and during my trek I heard music start to play before it stopped followed by a loud bang that made me almost jump out of my skin.

"Sonny!" I called out and I hurried my pace. I pushed open the door to see Sonny sitting sitting in a chair, leaning forward with his elbows on the table in front of him with both hands in his hair. Next to him on the ground sat a now smashed mac book. "Sonny."

"I can't fucking do this." He put his head down on the small space in front of him. I threw my purse and keys on the couch against the wall and came over to him, careful to step around the broken laptop on the ground.

"Yes you can." I said and rubbed his back. I noticed another laptop sitting off to the side, open. How many laptops did he have laying around? Geez. I felt him take a deep breath and lean back, untangling his hands from his hair. He looked stressed. Actually, stressed was an understatment.

He looked up at me for a second and I was trying to wrack my brain for anything that was going to help him right now. I've never seen him like this before so I was seriously at a loss. I looked around to see an empty box of cigarettes with an ashtray and the red lighter I gave him along with an empty water bottle.  I walked back over to my purse and dug around for the pack of Menthol's that I always had on me.

I walked over and threw those on the desk in front of him before stepping over the broken laptop to stand behind him. "What are you freaking out about?" I asked and started massaging his shoulders to maybe get rid of some of the tension.  He reached out and pulled a cigarette from the pack and grabbed the red lighter.

"It's not working. Nothing is fucking working." He took a drag and pushed his hair back. I just watched him blow smoke out and frown at the sound board in front of him. "And now my fucking laptop is broken." He gestured towards the broken computer on the ground.

"What exactly isn't working?" I asked since I had no idea what he was freaking about. I hadn't even heard most of anything he was working on mostly because he didn't want to show me. He was taking this whole secret thing and really running with it. He claimed he didn't want to show me anything until it was done and clearly he wasn't finishing anything since I hadn't heard much.

"Nothing sounds like it belongs. It's all too fucking different." I watched his fist clench in his lap and I was getting frusturated with myself for not being able to help him.

"Isn't different what you were going for?" I asked, slightly confused. He stood up and stepped over to grab the other laptop sitting on the table. He sat that in front of him and sat back down. He waited for it to come to life.  I was about to ask him why he called me here but I didn't want to upset him anymore than he already was. Clearly he just needed to be in human contact with someone or to vent or something.

He clicked around once that opened and about a minute later music started to play. It was very calm and soothing and a few seconds in the vocals came in that were just as calm. I instantly recognized them as his own.

"Take take take me with you when you go. Fire away, fuck this place that we call home." It was incredibly calm and didn't have a heavy beat at all. It led up to what I thought was going to be a drop or something but it was just a really calm beat. I was actually in love with it but he was right when he said it sounded nothing like his previous work. It was still amazing though.

"Babe this is amazing." I told him. I think I was just so in awe that he did the vocals on it. I mean, it's not the first track of his that he sang on but this one was different. His voice was so clear on it and it made me want to jump and clap my hands like an obsessed fan or something.

"You're biased." He shook his head and I frowned at the back of his head since I was still standing behind him, leaning on the chair.

"Of course I'm biased but this is still great!" I leaned down and rested my hands on his chest, staring at his computer.

"So I've got that and then this." He closed that and opened a new file and clicked on it. "It's not finished." He said and right off the bat there was a voice saying something over and over again. After a few seconds I realized it was saying "dirty vibe." I don't know what he was talking about, it sounded pretty finished to me. It had a catchy beat and a guy came in with vocals but I was stuggling to understand anything he was saying.

It was so fun and instantly made me want to dance. About halfway through he cut it off and threw the now dead cigarette in the ashtray. "How the fuck do those go on the same album? It doesn't work." He shook his head again.

"Isn't that the purpose of a full album. It gives you more space to explore different sounds. Who wants to listen to eleven or twelve songs that all sound exactly the same? Different is good." I told him. "And both of those were amazing." I told him. He sighed at spun around in the chair so he was facing me.

"I just feel lost or in over my head or something." He pushed his hair back again and leaned back in the chair.

"You're going to come out of this with a dope album and another grammy or something." I leaned down and put my hands on his knees so my face was right in his.

"I just can't see it yet." He sounded sad. "And there is absolutely no way I'm going to make the release date we set."

"Stop looking at the negatives. If you have to push back the release date then push it back. It's not like the world knows about this yet."

"I guess." He muttered. "But now I've got this app in the works and I just don't want people to feel like they're working for nothing. I just don't want to disappoint." He frowned.

"You never disappoint. Anybody who knows you knows you would never intentionally do that." I told him. He took a deep breathe and pushed his hair back again.

"Did I wake you up?" He asked and I giggled.

"No, you did not wake me up. I was watching TV on the couch." I stood up and fixed the sweater I was wearing since it was falling down my shoulder on one side.

"We should get back, I guess." He spun back around and went to go close all the programs open on his laptop. Just as I was spinning to go grab my purse I noticed an internet page pop up with what looked like jewelry. I don't think I've ever seen anybody move as fast as him to slam the laptop shut and put it in his lap.

"Careful, or you'll break that one too. Who are you? The incredibly Hulk?" I teased and he just laughed but it sounded like a nervous laugh. "Fuckin' weirdo." I mumbled under my breath. He followed behind me after grabbing all of his stuff.

"What did you do today?" He asked as he locked up.

"I went to lunch and then I went shopping with Cara and OH!" I shouted and he looked at me all alert.

"Okay, two things! One, I got to read the conversation between her and Joel. That was incredibly weird and interesting all at the same time. She's been freaking out because she thinks he's just using her for rebound sex." I explained as I unlocked my car and we both got in. "But I was reading their conversations and I think he's like actually vibing her."

"One, you couldn't sound any more cliche California right there if you tried." He chuckled and unrolled the window. "And two, I could have told you that."

"Then why didn't you!?" I shouted. How could he have vital information and not tell me? He just plugged his phone in and played music completely ignoring me. I instantly recognized the song as Shave It by Anton. I haven't seen that dude in a while. "Babe!" I shouted again and he looked up, wide eyed.

"What? How was I suppose to know she thought he was just in it for sex?" He kept playing on his phone and I groaned and put the car in drive. "What was the other thing you had to tell me that was so important?" He asked but didn't look up from his phone. I unrolled my window too and just let the night breeze flow through the car. It was a little after two in the morning now and everything was dark and quiet.

"I ran into your ex girlfriend today while I was shopping with Cara. She worked at whatever store we were in." That must have got his attention because he looked up and over at me.

"Uhh, that's interesting I guess?"

"Yeah, she came right up to me. Knew my name and everything." I giggled thinking back to it.

"That doesn't surprise me, actually." He shrugged and looked back down at his phone changing the song again to some song by Wes. I huffed, hoping he would be more interested in this but clearly he wasn't.

"What do you know about Joel and Cara?" I questioned and glanced over at him. I poked his cheek to try and get his attention away from his phone. He just jerked his head away.

"What the hell?" He chuckled. "I don't know? He's vibing her, to use your own words." He laughed and looked back down at his phone, changing the song yet again.

"Legit likes her?" I questioned.

"I don't know, Bay. He just told me was into her. That's literally all I know." He dropped the phone in his lap and held his hands up in a surrendering pose.

"You need to gossip more." I told him and reached over to poke his cheek again. He jerked his head back and reached over to grab my face, squishing it. I pushed his hand back and focused on driving. "Stop! I'm driving!" I reached over and slapped his chest. He just laughed and picked up his phone again.

We finally made it home after a poking war that lasted the whole car ride. While we were walking down the path that led to the apartment I felt him grab at the back of my sweatpants and pull. I screamed when I realized he just yanked the back of my pants down. I pulled them up and turned around to face him. He just bent over and was laughing so hard he was crying.

"I-I really didn't think-" He couldn't even finish his sentence because he was laughing so hard. "I really didn't think they would actually slid down but-" He kept laughing. "But they did! And boom! There's your butt!" He literally was about to fall over from laughing so hard.

"Fucking jackass!" I shouted at him and started smacking him. I couldn't help but laugh though. I stomped away to our apartment but he just kept laughing. He eventually stood up and followed behind, still laughing.

"I hate you." I muttered and tried not to smile at his laughter.

We went upstairs and he set his bag down on a chair next to his studio and followed me into the bedroom. "I'm not even the slightest bit tired. It doesn't feel like two in the morning."

"That's because you're sleep schedule hasn't been regular since the year 2000." I giggled and kicked my sweatpants off. It was funny that I just screamed at him for pulling them down and now I was just walking around without pants. I was suddenly incredibly happy at where my life was at.

"Suddenly incredibly happy you put a TV in here." He said climbing into bed after changing. He reached for the remote and turned it on.

"You didn't even ask if I wanted to sleep or anything?" I snorted and walked into the bathroom to fix my hair. I twisted it into a bun on top of my head and bounced it around.

"Why are you fixing your hair right now?" He asked making it sound like I was doing some ridiculous task or something.

"I'm sorry I'm trying to look good for you!" I fake cried and he rolled his eyes and chanel surfed.

"Are you fishing for a compliment right now?" He asked with a chuckle.

"I don't know. Are you going to give me one?" I smirked and leaned against the bathroom door.

"Gosh, Baylee. You could be wearing a trash bag and still be the prettiest girl in the room!" He said incredibly sarcastically and I giggled. I jumped on the bed and into him. He groaned and leaned back.

"You're so sweet to me!" I wrapped my arms around him and burried my head in his chest. He just picked up his phone and started looking at that, completely ignoring me. I adjusted myself so my head was in his leg and I was laying sideways on the bed. I reached up and took his glasses off his face and put them on my own.

I zipped the sweater up all the way and reached up to poke his chest. "Hey, who am I?"

"Annoying." He replied instantly and I slapped him but it was an awkward angle and had no power behind it.

"Hey!" I laughed. He held the phone above my face and I stuck my tongue out and closed one eye while he took a picture. He messed around with his phone for a few more minutes while I watched whatever weird movie was on TV. He threw his phone on the bedside table and reached down to pull the glasses off my face. He threw those on the bedside table too.

"Are you feeling better?" I asked and looked up at him.

"Much better." He smiled and squeezed my face. I pushed his hand away with a giggle and sat up to adjust myself so I was sleeping like a normal person which really meant I was using half of his body as a pillow.

I was happy that this is where my life was at and I wouldn't have it any other way.

--So I'm going to start wrapping this up soon! How exciting! :) This was just a fluff chapter because nothing is greater than fluff. Also, I've been listening to FFTL a lot which made me throw in the Emily thing. --
