Chapter 8

For a truck passing us by on the road.

Everyone let out a sigh of relief but I struggled to let out mine.
The pain in my chest had gotten worse.
Sara and Seth didn't let go of me and in that moment I was grateful they didn't.
Jack turned the ignition one more time and the cab finally started. He drove onto the road, the engine huffing and puffing.

"Emily Bruno, you must breath." Sara said to me.
I tried, taking in deep, labored breaths.
"Emily, honey, just breath deep, think of something nice, okay? We're gonna get you somewhere safer." Jack said into the rear-view mirror to me.
I nodded and did what he said.
I closed my eyes tight and I thought of the dream I had. The dress, the trees, the birds...and Seth.
"It is alright, Emily Bruno. The danger is over. You are safe." I heard Seth say and I felt a hand on my cheek, stroking it slightly.
Immediately, my breathing slowed and the pain in my chest went away.
I opened my eyes and looked up to see Sara smiling slightly and Seth was there, still holding my hand and his other hand was suspended in mid-air.
"How did you do that?" I asked.
"Do what Emily Bruno?" He asked.
"Make me calm down so fast. No one can do that." I replied.
Seth looked slightly surprised.
"Perhaps Seth has another power we didn't previously know about." Sara said but she had that little knowing smile on her face which I was slowly growing accustomed to.

We eventually drove into a small town and up to a car repair which looked worse than the cab and extremely cheap.
Uncle Jack got out and dusted himself off before shutting the door.
Seth, Sara and I followed and the siblings stood together while I leaned back on the car door.
"Hello!" Jack yelled out, "Anyone here?"
"We're closed!" A Hispanic accent rang out through the shop.
Jack turned around to a guy lying in a desk chair, seemingly asleep.
"Oh, there you are. Yeah, I know you guys are closed but we've experienced a little bit of car trouble so if you could just-" he began before he was cut off.
"We're still closed. You should experience car trouble when we're open." The Hispanic owner said tiredly.
"I'll work on that next time. This time, I really need you to-" jack tried to continue before being cut off again, this time by Sara.
"Jack Bruno." She said to get his attention.
Jack turned around to look at her.
"The only thing that will convince Eddie Cortez to reopen his business will be a significant amount of money." She said quickly.
I raised my eyebrows and looked back at Jack.

"Wait a minute." Eddie said to the siblings, standing up, "Do I know you?"
"No. Absolutely not. You don't know them from anywhere." Jack replied quickly.
The car shop owner looked suspiciously at the siblings before Jack pulled out the bunch of money that Seth gave to him, "I pay you double your rating."
Eddie scoffed, "Triple."
"Done." Jack immediately replied and Eddie's face dropped.
"Huh?" He walked around towards the car and I stepped off the door for him to see the sides better.
"What, you get in a fight with a rhinoceros?" Eddie said in bemusement.
Jack and I chuckled.
"Poor rhino." Eddie said, chuckling.
"Poor rhino, I know." Jack said, chuckling along.
Seth and Sara joined in and we all laughed for a bit before Jack shook his head at us to shut us up.
"I don't even know where to start with this baby." Eddie said.
Then I stepped in, "Well, where you could start is replacing the front shocks and the ty-rods and patch up the radiator and the exhaust and if you have four tires you can fit those too." I said in one breath.
"You got one hour." Jack finished.
Eddie just looked at us in bewilderment. The same looks were on Seth and Sara's faces.

Ten minutes later, the four of us walked into a crowded restaurant where country music was playing and people were dancing and eating.
Sara and Seth stood to look at it for a second before Jack and I beckoned them over to a table.
I looked back at them and they looked a little lost.
"Have you guys ever seen a restaurant before?" I asked.
"No, not on our planet, Emily Bruno." Sara said and I raised my eyebrows in surprise as we approached a table.
"Go on, sit. Sit down." Jack told them and they did.
We all looked around to see if there was any sign of anything suspicious before Sara said, "I hope you do not act upon your thought of making a fast breakout through the back door of Ray's and escape down Stoney Creek. Never to look back at us again." Sara said to Jack and I looked at her in astonishment.
"Where did you get that idea?" I asked her.
"H-how did you know that?" Jack asked in equal astonishment.
"My sister also possesses the ability of telepathy. She can read the minds of those nearest to her." Seth replied for her.
"Really?" Jack said, "Well, you tell your sister that here on Earth, reading minds is very rude. Don't do that."
I gave him an unimpressed look while the siblings looked at each other and me in confusion.

"Hey guys," a waitress said as she came up to us with four glasses and placed them on the table, "My name's Tina and I'm gonna be your server."
Jack and I nodded our thanks while the siblings stared at her.
"Wow. Look at you kids." She said to us.
"Uh, what-what do you mean look at them? They look like two ordinary, innocent, all American kids." Jack said, talking about Seth and Sara, stuttering slightly.
I slapped him mentally and saved us by saying, "We are a little filthy aren't we?" I said with a smile at Tina.
"Yeah, you guys look like you rolled around in a pig pen before dinner." She said, chuckling.
I chuckled with her.

"Evening Tina." A voice said behind us and Tina looked up while I gave Jack a warning look, silently telling him not to jump to conclusions before blurting something out.
"Sheriff Anthony." Tina said, "Your table is waiting for you. I'll send you a few little pies, huh?"
The sheriff nodded in agreement, "Sounds good." He said and walked off with his men.
Tina then turned back to us, "Now why don't you three come with me and we'll get you guys cleaned up, huh?" She asked and I immediately nodded,
"Yes please," and stood up, signaling both Seth and Sara to follow and Tina lead us into the back where the bathrooms were.

"The ladies is just here and the men's just beside it. Will you guys be alright?" Tina said.
"Yes, thank you very much, we'll be fine." I said, smiling.
"Alrighty then." Tina said and left us on our own.
I opened the ladies bathroom door and both siblings began to follow.
"Seth, no, you go in the other bathroom." I said, snickering a little.
He looked confused, "What would be the intended reason, Emily Bruno?" He asked.
"Seth, this room is for females only. The other one is for males." Sara informed him.
I tapped the sign of a woman on the door for proof.
"I see." He said and walked over to the men's bathroom.
I giggled and lead Sara into the bathroom.
