Chapter 12

When I woke up, I found myself not in the position I had fallen asleep in. My head was on it's side and my neck was resting on something.
A hand was slowly and hesitatingly stroking my hair and it felt amazing but I lifted my head and the hand immediately released me.
I was not surprised it was Seth who I had moved onto in my sleep but I sure was glad that it was.
I smiled at him and he returned a smaller one and I looked out his window to see that it was early morning.
"Are you well rested, Emily?" Seth asked me.
I nodded, "Yes, thank you Seth. Did you or Sara get any sleep?"
He shook his head, "Sara did, however, I did not."
"What? Aren't you tired? You need rest." I said but he shook his head again.
"I was not tired, Emily, I am in good health." He said and I gave him a disbelieving look but he nodded and I sighed.
"Alright then." I said.

"Sara." I heard Jack say and turned to the front to see Jack looking very uncomfortable and the dog who had moved to the passenger seat staring straight at him.
"He would appreciate if you could pull over so he can relieve himself." Sara said and I raised my eyebrows.
"Well, we don't have time for that. He should have went before we left Stoney Creek." Jack countered and I rolled my eyes. Why must he be so stubborn?
"He is not pleased with your attitude." Sara translated what the dog was thinking.
"Really? Is that the way he feels?" Jack began.
Here we go, I thought.
"Well, you remind him that I'm a man and he's a dog." Jack said, emphasizing the word "dog". "And I'm not about to have this or any conversation with a dog." He continued, again, "dog" was emphasized. "So my answer is still no." This time, "no" was the emphasized word and Jack flicked his eyebrows at the dog in a smart way and turned back to the road.
I sighed. He'll pull over any time now, I thought and I knew Sara heard it.

Five minutes later, Jack and Sara stood outside the cab, waiting for Junkyard the dog.
He came running back, barked at Jack then came into the car, seating himself in a comfortable seat at my feet once more and I bent down to pat him around the ears while he licked my hand.
"Junkyard says 'thank you'." Sara said.
"Did he now." Jack said, "Is there anything else he wants?"
Sara bent down into the cab and looked at Junkyard before standing back up and saying "He said he would love a bone, or a meaty treat?"
I let out a laugh before hiding it with my hand so no one would see, however, Seth saw it and even let himself smile along with me and again, I saw that boy from my first dream.
"Top of my to-do list." Jack said, "Just get in."
Sara obeyed and Jack closed the door behind her.

Off we went again, down dirt road after dirt road until we finally made it to the highway and eventually after that, civilization of Las Vegas.

Jack pulled into the front of an entertainment center and walked up to a Valet parker, giving him some money as he talked.
"I need you to keep the cab close and get the dog some water and..." he trailed off as he looked back at Junkyard who barked from the window, "give him a meaty treat." He patted the valet on the shoulder and I smirked at Jack to which he acted confused.
So tough on the outside but such a softie on the inside, I thought, shaking my head and beckoning Seth and Sara to follow him.
"Sounds like Seth." I heard Sara's voice in my head and I smiled a little and nodded.

"Okay," Jack told us, putting his arms over Sara and I while I held onto Seth's hand, "Stay close to me, don't talk to anyone. Nice and normal."
We went up an escalator and onto the second floor.

We followed hallway after hallway and finally came to a theatre door with the name 'Dr. Alex Friedman' on a board in front of it.
A woman stood on the stage drinking a cup of coffee, she had short, dark red hair, wore a black skirt and flats and a light blue button down shirt.
"The cattle mutilation lecture doesn't start for another hour but have a seat. It's packed, it always is." She said and dumped her coffee in a waste bin.
"We're here to see you, actually." Jack said.
"Oh." She said, chuckling slightly.
"Jack Bruno, we met earlier."
"We did?"
"Cab? Airport to hotel? Driver?" He said, making motions with his hands.
"Oh, the non-believer." Dr Friedman said and chuckled again, "What are the odds?"
"Is there someplace we could talk?" Jack asked.
The doctor looked out into the empty seats, "The crowd in here making you uncomfortable?"
"Even more private than this." Jack replied.
"Look, no offense but I'm..." she turned to go.
"She's doubting her thesis on Gliese 581 and Alcubierre's warp drive." Sara suddenly said and we all turned to look at her.
Dr Friedman turned slowly and stared at Sara, "How did you know that?"
"Oh, it gets better than that. Trust me." I said to her.

Fifteen minutes later, we found ourselves in a Mars exhibit which wasn't opening until two hours later.
Sara, Seth and I waited while Jack filled Alex in on everything that happened so far today, explaining everything about Sara and Seth, the Siphon, the Government agents. Everything, with me including bits and pieces here and there.

"Are you insane?" She asked once he was done.
"I thought you of all people would know what to do and want to help!" Jack said to her, gesturing to the siblings.
"Why, because I'm a nut job at a UFO convention?" Alex countered.
Jack opened his mouth, "Don't answer that." Alex said and he closed his mouth.
"I know." He said instead, "It sounds really crazy."
"You think? Hey! Please don't touch that." Alex said, pointing at the siblings and I turned to see they were fiddling with her computer which I didn't even notice since I had been paying attention to their conversation.
"You-you captured an image of our ship." Seth said, turning the computer to show her.
"The smudge?" Alex asked, "You're telling me, you think the smudge is your spaceship?"
"We don't think it's our spaceship. We know it is our spaceship." Sara said, looking excited and I smiled.
Jack and I looked back at her expectantly but she did not look impressed.
"That's it. I'm out." She said, "Now if you'll excuse me, I'll just grab my laptop and-" her hand went to push Seth's off her laptop but Seth's hand phased through and she gasped and dropped the laptop but Sara stopped it just before it hit the ground and suspended it back up to her hands.
"Oh, they can also do all this stuff too." Jack said and I smirked at him and he smiled.
"Who are you?" Alex asked Seth and Sara and they looked at each other, probably talking telepathically.
"Show her." Sara said out loud.
Seth looked at me and I smiled softly and nodded.
He took his device from his pocket and placed it on the table that the laptop was previously sitting on. It opened and there was a flash of light before the entire room was filled with lights.
No, they weren't lights. They were stars. And planets! And moons!

Jack, Alex and I looked around in amazement. This was fantastic!
As I looked around I caught Seth staring at me intently again, like I was the most interesting thing he had ever come across. I smiled at him and continued to look around.

Little did I know, Uncle Jack noticed the exchange of looks but pretended to ignore it.

However, I caught the look him and Alex exchanged as she covered her mouth in excitement and was trying to hold herself together.
"This is huge!!" She exclaimed and Jack smiled. She walked over to the siblings, "I have so many questions. Even though you are the answers, standing right in front of me."
Jack cleared his throat and gave her a look while I giggled softly.
"Yeah, sorry. I'm just excited." She said, "Where-where are you from?"
Sara pointed upwards at the simulation of Earth, "Our planet is located some three-thousand light years from earth." She said.
Suddenly, I felt a pull from inside me and I stepped forward as the galaxy in the room spun and I pointed up at a planet almost identical to Earth.
"This one?"
Seth and Sara both looked at me wide-eyed and nodded.
I stepped back, questioning what the hell just happened. I don't know how, or why I did that, it happened so fast, I didn't see it coming! Jack looked at me curiously and I shrugged to him.
"Space travel of such sizable distance-" Alex began.
"Is possible using a paradoxical passage in the unbound-" Seth interrupted her.
"Wormholes!" I exclaimed, interrupting Seth, and everyone looked at me, "Paradoxical passages in the unbound region of space time! That's a wormhole!" I said then stopped at everyone's expressions.
"What?" I folded my arms but Sara was smiling at me and Seth looked like he was seeing me for the first time. Jack was smirking knowingly. He knew where I got that from.
Alex laughed in excitement, "My presentation at the national convention was right. Interstellar is possible using wormholes as a short-cut through space!"
"Uh, that was my first guess as well, wormholes." Jack said and I smirked, obviously he was trying to be smart like the rest of us, "Continue, Doctor." He said.
"Why did you come to Earth?" Alex asked them.
"Our planet is dying." Sara said and my eyes widened, "Millenia of neglect has rendered our atmosphere unbreathable."
"Sounds familiar." I said to Alex and she nodded.
"Our parents are scientists who have studied Earth's changing climates in hopes of finding a solution for our planet's future." Seth continued.
Huh. Funny that. Looks like we have another thing in common.
"Our people's fears began to rise and then our parents discovered something our leaders were very interested in." Sara continued excitedly.
"Your planet makes a suitable living environment for our kind." Seth said, a little hesitantly, "It would be simplest to abandon our planet and..." he paused, "occupy yours." My eyebrows rose at that.
"Okay so wait, I'm helping you conquer my own planet?" Jack asked.
"No! Most people on our planet are fiercely opposed to this plan." Sara exclaimed.
"But fear of extinction triumphed among our people." Seth said.
"And then our parents discovered a solution." Sara continued, "An experiment as an outpost here was successful in regenerating life into previously dying plants and trees."
Alex and I looked at each other, "Which would enable the re-oxygenating of the poisoned atmosphere." Alex said.
"Right." I said, then stopped, "So what's the problem?" I asked.
"Our military." Seth answered, "They preferred a solution of invasion over science."
"Which is why we had to hurry on retrieving the experiment." Sara said.
Suddenly it clicked, "That device! The one from the shack! And the plants underneath, that was your parent's experiment?" I asked.
They both nodded.
Sara dug in her pocket for the device, "All proof that our planet can be saved and your planet spared is in here." She said, holding it up.
"Where are your parents again?" Jack asked.
"They were arrested for their opposition." She replied.
"We agreed to complete the task for them." Seth said.
"What about the assassin?" He asked again.
"Wha- assassin?" Alex asked in astonishment, "What assassin?"
"The Siphon warrior series Deranium 75 was created by our military." Sara explained.
"They're bred to hunt?"
"They're bred to kill." Seth said immediately but looked as though he regretted it as soon as he saw my expression of fear.
"If we don't return home in time. The invasion will proceed." He said softer.
"We seriously need to find your space ship." I said and they both nodded.
