Chapter 32 - Following the trail

As the class got into their hero attire, Izuku and Eri were in the Batcave. Since she had returned, Izuku planned to test Eri's new skills and see how well she would fair in combat with multiple opponents. He had warned them not to go overboard with their abilities and skill as he wanted to see what everyone needed to work on. He would be in an observation area while the rest would take on Eri.

"How are you feeling?" Izuku asked while helping Eri with some of her equipment.

"A little nervous. I have missed everyone but it feels weird to be back." She replied, putting on her utility belt.

"I know what you mean. It was weird coming back from my training initially too. One minute you have to train and fight like your life depends on it, next minute you hold back to not fatally injure anyone. Speaking of lives depending on things, it was a good job you showed up and helped Grandmaster Bushido Brown with the Hateocracy."

"Yeah, I dread to think what would have happened if I acted too late."

Flashback:

Just as the guillotine was coming back around, a batarang flew straight into it, knocking it into the ground just in time for Bushido to land a knock out blow.

Flashback Ends:

"He was pretty rude and arrogant when we first met but as soon as I mentioned your name, he did a 180 on his attitude and began to train me." Eri stated, equipping her cowl and Izuku sat in some jeans, a T-shirt and his old cowl.

"Yeah he always was a little freaked out by me. Nevertheless, training by the hand of Grandmaster Bushido Brown is going to help you in this test as well as my own training I imparted to you."

Over at the training gym, everyone was suited up and waiting to start when the  room became dark for a second and then the dark knights appeared in front of everyone sending shivers down their spines.

"Ok, you will all be running a gauntlet in pairs against Eri so I can see how her skill has increased. First up will be Bakugo and Iida. Everyone who isn't on, make their way to the observation area." Batman instructed. However, it was a little weird for the class to see him in his mask with just some ordinary civilian clothes. Those who were not fighting left the combat zone to stand near Batman with Kyoka hugging into his side. Every other girl had one thought: *lucky*. Momo had decided to raise a question before the match started.

"Are you sure it's a good idea to start her off with two of the strongest members of our class? I mean what if she gets hurt?" She asked cause it others to question this.

"Yeah it does seem a bit unfair on her man." Mineta stated.

"Not to worry, she has had lots of training for these situations and they have been told not to go overboard." Batman replied as he signaled for the fight to begin by telling Kirishima to harden and then headbutt a gong to which the manly man was rather enthusiastic about.

As the gong sounded, Bakugo rushed forward knowing that his best chance was to end it quick so she had no time to adapt to his fighting style. Iida on the other hand decided to run around in a circle to gain momentum for a strong kick. After quickly analysing the situation Eri grabbed some pellets from her belt as she saw Iida approaching from behind using a recipro burst. Bakugo on the other hand charged an explosion but not as strong as usual because he didn't want to hurt her. When both were relatively close, Eri crushed the pellets in her palm and grappled up to the ceiling out of the way of the collision. Bakugo's explosion ended up hitting Iida in the face and in turn, Iida's kick landed directly into Bakugo's stomach. The two were sent flying back by the attacks a considerable distance so Eri dropped down and knocked each one out with a simple punch in the face.

"Holy crap, she took them down only by dodging and using one punch on each of them!" Mina exclaimed as the others were left in shock. Tsu, being Tsu, decided to point out the obvious.

"That was very impressive. Looks like the two boys need to be more careful."

(Honestly though, can we take a moment to appreciate my girl Froppy. I mean Jiro is still best girl in my opinion but Tsu deserves more recognition. Can't think of any reason to hate her cause there aren't any. Regardless, I'm getting off track, sorry.)

While other matches were going ahead at UA, things weren't going too well for someone in the city.

"What the hell are you doing with that thing?"

"Why are you so sad? I don't like to see people take themselves too seriously. And you, well now you look like someone who doesn't appreciate a good joke. Come on, let's put a smile on that face!" Then the only thing heard was screaming and then sudden silence. The silence was cut by the drop of a body and the gushing red along the floor boards.

Back at UA, Eri was going through most of the class but by now was struggling against the team of Kyoka, Tokoyami and Todoroki. She was holding her own for the moment but couldn't figure out how to get past their quirks. Dark Shadow could strike from a distance and so could Shoto, Kyoka could distort her equilibrium and then it's game over so Eri tried a trick from Izuku but she wasn't a master of it quite yet. With the flick of a switch on her belt, the whole room fell dark to which Tokoyami was at home.

"Oh you think darkness is your ally? You merely adopted the dark." He stated, feeling Dark Shadow grow more powerful and surround his body like armour. Kyoka had detected Eri with her quirk and whispered a plan to Todoroki.

"When I say, create an ice wall in the direction you face." She whispered to avoid Eri hearing the plan.

"I was born in it," Tokoyami continued, "moulded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a teen and by then it was nothing to me but blinding." As he uttered the last word, he caught Eri mid air. "The shadows betray you, because they belong to me." As he said this he flung her towards Kyoka and Shoto.

"Now!" Kyoka yelled as Todoroki created a large wall of ice which encased Eri.

Tokoyami was pleased with how the fight turned out when in his element. That was until he started to hear a voice.

"The shadows don't belong to you... they betray you... because I am the shadows." And just as the lights flashed back on, Batman was stood right in front of him causing both him and Dark Shadow to shriek. "The combat was good and has shown me where you all need to improve. Well done everyone, keep it up and hone your skills." Just as he walked away though, he received a call on his phone which he noticed thanks to his ringtone:

"Batman, it's Gordon. You got to get over here it's fucking horrifying! I just threw up in a bin outside! It's just... you better get over here and see for yourself." Gordon was frantic and trying to keep himself composed but failing miserably.

"I'm on my way Gordon, have the cops and detectives out of the area. I'm going to need uninterrupted access to this crime scene."

"I'll only be able to get them out for a short time. You won't have long when you get here."

"I won't need long."

As Batman turned up to the empty crime scene, he immediately began searching for clues on the victim, killing weapon, patterns or anything he could analyse. He approached the victim who was lying on the floor with blood all around the area and what looks like knife wounds around the mouth, cutting the skin between the jaw and cheeks in half all the way up to the joint on the mouth. The eyes dilated and a look of pain and horror with crimson stains splattered across their face and teeth. Gordon wasn't kidding when saying it was messed up. The body face was still recognisable enough for facial recognition to be used but since the suit was new and lacked some of the previous technology, he would have to do this back at the Batcave. There was a bloodied knife left near the body and a cipher on the wall reading:

B J O A O N T K Y S E O Y S U

(If you can solve that without looking it up then I tip my hat to you)

It was strange, nobody he knew of left one of these at the scene of a murder before. Batman then walked over to the murder weapon and lightly dusted for prints but came up with nothing. All he had was a face that was barely recognisable but just enough, a murder weapon with the victims blood and a cipher left by an unknown murdered. That was however, until he noticed some extra blood droplets on another wall in the room with some shoe streaks left behind. The pattern of streaks indicated a scuffle and there was some more blood on the floor next to the streaks. There was a torn piece of purple fabric on the wall near the first batch of blood he notices and a smashed phone on the floor near the victim. To wrap things up, he took three blood samples and the memory card from the phone. The victim labelled A, the first patch on the wall labelled B and the other floor sample labelled C. With everything he needed, Batman exited the crime scene and notified Gordon that the police could resume their investigation.

With everything he needed, Izuku promptly returned to the Batcave and got to work. He removed his cowl and high tech contact lenses to review everything and go through things as he happened upon them to see if he missed anything. The three blood samples were deposited into a rack, spaced out so that they could all be processed and see who the DNA belonged to so that he would have his victim and killer identified. As he was reviewing the footage, Izuku took a screenshot of the cipher and printed it out for further analysis. Just as he was reviewing all the evidence, he heard that someone had entered the Batcave from UA. It was none other than his girlfriend Kyoka. She had came to see how he was doing but was immediately taken aback by the monitors with the cypher, blood, murder victim and everything else.

"Oh my god! What the hell?!" She exclaimed. "What kind of person does this to another human being?!"

"I don't know Kyo. Whoever it was is a real psycho."

"I - I just came to check on you and see how you were doing, you know given that you were called away earlier."

"I'm ok, but I'll be better when I put this person behind bars. How is Eri? Is she ok after the combat training?"

"Yeah she is ok, a little tired but otherwise alright."

"Good, I'm glad you are both ok." He stood up and walked over to Kyoka. He brought them close together, his lips brushing on hers as she blushed a rose red. They felt so at peace in this moment, their eyes becoming heavier, their pulses quickening and their love for each other burning brighter. They soon felt overwhelmed and closed the distance, feeling the sweet kiss of their lover electrify their very being. Kyoka snaked her hands around his neck as Izuku's arms wrapped around her petite waist. She felt herself needing him and him, her. Izuku decided the case could wait a night and then retreated up to the dorms with his little violet to enjoy the love fuelled night that awaited them.
