Chapter 22 - Can I save everyone?

Firefly flew straight after the Batwing, trying to singe the wings and take it down. However, this was proving to be a more difficult task than he thought as the Batwing deployed flares to temporarily blind him. While he kept following the aircraft, Batman was already busy infiltrating the bridge to search for the hostages and rescue them from their captors. As soon as he entered the structure, Izuku was contacted by Kyoka.

"Hey Izu, I know you're saving people right now but... the baby is gonna be a girl. I'm sorry but I had to tell you now." She said .

"That's great," he replied, "I can't wait to meet the little lady. And I'm sure Eri will when she returns from training in the US with one of my old masters." He then continued his journey through the old structure, searching for hostages.

Eventually, he made it to the Northern pillar of the bridge and found a group of armed men with hostages all gathered in the centre with a person with a flamethrower.

"Why are you doing this? Please let us go!" One woman pleaded but this didn't go over well for her. The man with the flamethrower walked over to her and pointed it directly in her face.

"Shut it lady! The only reason you're still alive is because we need hostages to get to the bat. But we don't mind wasting a few of you if ya don't keep your mouth shut! Speak up again if you want me to melt ya face into charcoal!" There was no response.

"That's what I thought. Keep your eyes open boys, the bat could be here already."

Batman surveyed his surroundings, planning out how he was going to rescue the civilians and incapacitate the thugs guarding them. There was 8 enemies and 3 hostages, if he tried to save them without taking the enemies out then the civilians would certainly die. He needs to clear the room first. He surveyed his surroundings, noticing lots of things he could use to his advantage. There was no time to waste.

One thug made the mistake of walking directly under a large metal beam before being grabbed by his body and pulled up into the darkness. All that the others heard was a scream of pain and fear.

"Someone's injured, you two go take a look. Everyone else, guard the hostages." The remaining 7 cocked their guns while 2 of which journeyed to the source of the noise. When they got there though, there was nothing there or anybody.

"Nothing over here, but they are missing." And then immediately after, a body dropped down directly in front of them, making them panic and one to accidentally shoot and the wall. Thankfully no bullets hit the unconscious man strung up by wire. However, some of his teeth were missing and some blood was on his face.

"Never mind, we found him."

"Yeah he's pretty banged up. Do you think the bat got him o-" The body dropped to the floor with a thud causing them to immediately turn around again before their heads were smashed together, rendering them both unconscious.

"Three down, five to go." Batman said to himself.

One of the thugs tried to be smart and took a hostage but Batman was already a step ahead and had fired a disruption round into their weapon, jamming it and preventing them from shooting if he got spotted. However, the thug had the weapon pointed at the civilian's head. He was beginning to sweat bullets (no pun intended), thinking of how Batman would break his bones. Unfortunately, he was right and a hand grabbed his leg through the floor and only some eyes stared back from the darkness. He tried firing the jammed weapon but to no avail as he was dragged to the abyss. Another criminal heard this and journeyed over, only to get his head smashed against a railing and be pulled over an edge and left to hang there.

Only three were left now. Two with regular guns and one with a flamethrower. They were sticking together around the final hostage which would make this a little more difficult. But, Batman had a plan. If he could create a window to disarm the one with a flamethrower, he could take out both of the others. However, they could quickly turn on the hostage and kill them. Then, he got another idea, probably not a good one, but an idea nonetheless. He used his gliding skills to quickly swoop in and grab the hostage while the criminals turned to shoot at him. Batman set the hostage down with the others quickly and told them how to get out while he grappled back up to the enemies while they were reloading. He grabbed their guns and used them as melee weapon, breaking their wrists, arms and one of their legs. Unfortunately, he forgot about the one with the flamethrower and quickly dived out the way to avoid the fire. The man with the flamethrower followed Batman around the area, setting everything on fire until he hit a propane tank, causing an explosion in the side of the bridge and created a large fire. The one man started laughing until he was stopped by Batman simply walking out of the inferno, unscathed.

"W-w-w-what the h-hell a-are you?" He stuttered, clearly in disbelief, fear and everything in between.

"I'm the motherfucking Batman!" And he clocked him straight on the jaw with an uppercut so hard he did a backflip and landed on his body.

With the civilians rescued and out of the bridge, Izuku could turn his attention to Firefly and take him down before he could do anymore damage. Batman grappled between the broken beams and blazing areas of the bridge, trying to make his way to the surface. On his way through, a helicopter spotted him and shone its search light on him.

"Come in dispatch, we have a confirmed Batman sighting, awaiting orders to engage. Over." The pilot spoke over the radio to all other cops on the frequency. Then, Detective Tsukauchi, who still thought Batman was good and would help people, gave them their orders.

"Negative, and take that light off him. If Lynns sees your target he could turn on the hostages or something we don't know about yet. He'd turn that bridge into a puddle of molten metal. Keep your distance and try save any other hostages. Over."

"Roger that, pulling away from target." The entire time, Batman was staring down the helicopter, as if he was daring them to attack him. But as he suspected, they pulled away and paid no attention to him. It was time to put an end to this, Firefly had done enough damage and endangered innocent people just to get to him. He had to put an end to it as quickly as possible and get back to Kyoka at the dorms.

Batman grappled onto the road on the bridge which was set ablaze in lots of areas and multiple cars were part of the inferno. Firefly eventually noticed him standing on the bridge and flew down to confront him. He landed a few meters away so that he wouldn't be immediately caught. He wanted to savour the moment.

"So Batman," he said with his raspy voice, "how would you like to die? The quick, incinerating flash of an explosion?" He pointed to a pouch at his side. "Or, a nice... slow... BURN!!!" The flamethrower began illuminating the area as fire shot out of the nozzle and enveloped the area where Batman stood. Izuku had to quickly roll out of the way to avoid being burned to a crisp at which Firefly laughed.

"Listen right now Lynns, there's no more prize money on my head, it's over. You can give up now or I can make you surrender. You're choice."

"Here's my answer fool!" Firefly took to the skies and charged at Batman while shooting flames at him, melting the asphalt and some of the metal underneath. Batman only had one choice, run and avoid him until he gained an opening. So, he turned and began sprinting along the road, diving and sliding under cars that were in his way. Firefly constantly in hot pursuit yelling terrible puns.

"I'm too hot to handle huh Batman?"

Even more of the bridge was catching light now and the fire crew were working with water based heroes to keep it under control but could only stop it once Firefly was neutralised. Batman was stile diving and avoiding his attacks but was running out of space. Fortunately, part of the ground collapsed and revealed a way for him to flee for a bit longer.

"You don't hold a candle to me Batman, I'm just getting warmed up!" He threw some of the explosives from his pouch to the floor behind Batman to try and kill him. *damn it, I'm gonna have to jump down that hole if I want to get some more breathing room. Thankfully it comes out the side of the bridge* Batman thought as he ran directly towards the hole and jumped straight down.

After landing, he immediately grappled onto a hanging beam and shimmied along it until he reached an edge he could climb up onto. He started pulling himself up but soon heard the roar of Firefly's jet pack behind him along with his cackling. Deciding it was his best move at the time, he jumped off and onto Firefly to punch his jet pack a few times. However, he was soon thrown off by the thrust generated when it moves. Batman then glided safely back onto the bridge and prepared to finally end this fight.

Firefly was only more pissed now, so he charged up his flamethrower and shot straight at Batman again. Only this time when he rolled, Batman threw a glue grenade straight at his face, followed be a concussion batarang a few seconds later. As soon as the glue grenade stuck to Firefly, he began complaining.

"What is this?! Bat-spit?!" When he eventually managed to pry it off, he noticed the batarang stuck in the glue and watched Batman detonate it right in his face. Lynns was dazed and could hardly see a thing so he started randomly throwing thermite grenades everywhere until he regained his sight. Izuku saw this as his opportunity.

*I need to grapple onto him, it's dangerous but a risk I need to take.* Firefly then felt his sight come back and saw himself get hooked.

"What- what are you doing?!" He screamed, taking off and pulling Batman with him. "You don't give up easily do you Batman?" The next thing they knew, they were flying all around the bridge, narrowly missing the supports, cars, the fire and debris. Firefly had finally had enough and flew straight up and turned around to try set Batman on fire. However, the end of the flamethrower was grabbed and bent before Batman placed a glue grenade into the jet pack, causing a malfunction. This resulted in a crash landing where Firefly was the first to hit the ground with Batman on him.

"You need a new hobby!" Izuku declared, punching Firefly so hard it cracked his visor and knocked him out. Having spent what he considered too much valuable time, he left him for the police and entered the Batwing to make his way back to the dorms.

Part way through his flight back, Izuku called Kyoka.

"Kyo, I'm on my way back now. Kyo?"

"I'm in your home...Izuku..." that voice.

"Bane!"

"Come home to her, say your goodbyes to both of them. Once you have had time to turn grief into anger, then you'll be ready to face me. I've left enough life in her for some final words...

...if you hurry."

"KYOKA!!!"

Izuku made it to UA, the dorms were on fire and falling apart. The stone cracked and wood splintered or burning. All the students had managed to get out but some looked severely injured. The rest of the school had been evacuated, save for 1-A. Izuku jumped out of the Batwing and ran towards the building, looking at the pile of bricks, ash and flame that was once the UA dorms. He ignored everyone else at the moment, there was only one thing on his mind right now: the safety of his family.

"Kyoka?! Kyoka can you hear me?!" He repeatedly yelled. The other students were trying to tell him that she was still inside when it came down but it fell upon deaf ears, or he didn't want to believe what he was being told. Desperately, he started throwing pieces of rubble and debris everywhere in an effort to look, even removing his mask and throwing it aside. He turned on his detective vision to search and found her. She was underneath a lot of debris and her heartbeat slowing.

"No." He whimpered, letting tears fall as he rushed over and used all his strength to move the rubble.

"Kyoka, can you hear me? I'm going to get you out of there!" More and more came off and he got closer and closer. Until he finally got to her. He picked her up and carried her out of the wreckage, near where the others were.

Kyoka laid there covered in cuts and blood, her breathing heavy and slow.

"Kyoka you can't-" Izuku started but she cut him off.

"Don't let this be another reason for you to destroy yourself. Please." He could only cry and nod in response. Her eyes began to grow wider, her body limp and unresponsive. Izuku simply laid her down flat on the floor and closed her eyes. He knew something else too. So he placed a hand gently on her stomach, where their unborn child was now... dead. The rest of the class and teachers bowed their heads and dared not to approach Izuku in such a volatile state. He then began to hear things in his head.

Flashback to his Scarecrow nightmare:

"Don't let me die!" Kyoka screamed, blood splattered all over her.

Present:

Izuku clenched his fists in anger, grief, pain, rage and hatred.

"No... NO!!!!" He punched the ground as hard as he could, making everyone flinch and his shock gloves activate. Then out of desperation, he turned them on properly and started to try restart her heart.

Shock...

"Come on damn it!"

Shock...

Shock...

Shock...

The next sounds everyone heard was coughing and saw her moving once again. She needed desperate medical attention. Izuku held Kyoka in his arms, hugging her and reassuring her.

"You're going to be alright." He said, tears spilling down his face.
