Chapter 9

"Do you know him?" Blake asked Kim.

"Huh?" Kim asks diverting from her thoughts.

"Do you know Jack?" He asked again.

"Yeah. We are ..." Kim paused. What were they, exactly? "I mean, we do Karate together."

Kim tried to get up from the bed. Her foot was hurting badly but she did not care. She wanted to meet Jack. She wanted to apologize to him for something she never did. Kim felt guilty.

"Where are you going? The nurse said that you need rest." Blake tried to convince Kim to stay on her bed.

"No. I'm fine. I just have to go." She said as she hopped on her right foot, reaching the door.

"But ..."

"Don't worry. I'll be fine. Plus your coach must be looking for you." Kim told him. Blake nodded at her and left first. "Promise me, you'll take care."

"I will."

Meanwhile, Kim went out of the nurse's and hopped on her right foot until she reached the main hallway. She paused and took the support of the wall. Kim desperately wanted to see Jack. Where was he?

Her ankle's pain increased and she could not walk any further. She had to allow herself to sit down for a few moments. The school's auditorium was the nearest place that offered a chair.

Kim caught the wall and managed to jump a few steps. As she tried to jump over the stairs, her foot tripped causing her to fall. Kim felt a crack. She moaned in pain. Kim caught the side of the nearby chair and got up. She sat on the chair and took her left foot in her hand.

Kim noticed it being stiff in a weird, painful way. She heard her echoing weep all alone until a figure appeared in front of her. It was Jack.

"Jack." She cried.

He kneeled to the ground, ignoring her words. He tried to softly caress Kim's broken ankle. But she moaned. It only increased her weeping.

"Don't cry." He tried to calm her down by wiping her tears. Jack softly brushes Kim's blonde hair out of her face using his fingers. "Should I call the nurse?" He asked.

"No." Kim shoots instantly, clenching his shirt tightly as if she were a small kid. "Don't go anywhere." She cried out, resting her head against his. Kim kept sobbing until her throat didn't allow her to.

"Kim." Jack softly said, lifting her head with his hands. "Let me take you to the hospital."

Kim's face dropped. "But ..."

"Kim, I can't see you like this. It just makes me feel so useless." He tells her. She could see his face flooded with emotions for her. "I'll be with you, I promise." He finally adds.

Kim nods at him, her eyebrows still raised because of the pain. She wraps her arms around Jack's neck and he lifts her. Kim shoved her face in his shirt. Even though she couldn't see her environment, she could feel the staring of the students of the hallway.

Grace, Stephanie, Rachel, and Blake. Everyone.

She slowly lifts her face to see Jack. His expression showed it that he did not care. She was his priority. "I'm sorry." Kim said to Jack. "Hold tight." He replied, ignoring her apology.

*At the hospital*

Jack still had Kim in his arms. Somehow, he didn't seem tired at all.

"Do you need a wheelchair, sir?" A nurse who was walking by asked Jack.

He nodded. Jack carefully kept Kim on the wheelchair and kneeled beside her, once again. Kim's pain was a little tolerable than earlier. "How do you feel now?" He asked her, taking her hands.

"Better." Kim replies.

"Excuse me, could you fill her form at the reception?" The nurse interrupted.

He nodded at her. "I'll be back." He told Kim, letting go of her hands.

"How do you know her?" The receptionist asked Jack.

"We are ..." He paused. "We are in the same school. We're school-mates." He said, swallowing his own spit.

"I need parent-consent."

"Fine. I'll call her Mom." He reached his hand to his pocket to take out his phone.

Jack sat down at the chair, nearest to the entrance of the Hospital. He kept tapping his shoes to the floor until he spotted a Blonde, middle-aged woman swiftly walking in.

"You must be Kim's mom. I'm Jack." He introduced himself.

"Where's Kimberly?" She asked impatiently, placing her hand on his shoulder.

"Room no. 215." He tells her.

"Thank you so much." She took his hands and rushed towards the elevator.

Jack wipes his sweat from his forehead. Kim was just like her mother. Both of them sweet, and fond of thanking others. He smiled at a thought in his position. 'Kimberly'.

Ms. Crawford hastily entered Kim's room which drew Kim's attention. She saw Kim's left foot heavily wrapped with bandages. The doctor was preparing reports of her foot, on the right side of Kim's bed.

"Oh my god, Kimberly. Are you alright?" Ms. Crawford asked her, leaning close to Kim to hug her.

She nodded at her mom.

"Doctor, is she alright?" Her mom asked the doctor for confirmation because Kim's nod didn't satisfy her.

"Yeah, she is. It's just a minor fracture." She said, showing her the ex-ray. "She just needs some rest."

"How long will I stay here?" Kim asks.

"Let's say, 2 weeks."

2 weeks didn't sound good at all. But she had no choice except laying down and watching TV which was placed right in front of her. She looks at her mom and the doctor talking in the corner away from her. What were they talking about? "I am not afraid of anything, you can tell me if I have to lose my foot." Kim breaks the silence.

Her mom gives her the death-stare making Kim look away. The doctor chuckles at Kim's statement.

"No young lady, minor fractures don't take away people's foot. I am telling her that after you leave, you have to skip jumping, running, or any other activity which can cause pressure on your ankle for a month." The doctor said.

"But what about my Karate and cheer?" Kim asked folding her hands.

"All of that after a month. You don't wanna end up here and trouble your boyfriend again." She replied to Kim. Her second-last word caught Ms. Crawford's attention.

"Boyfriend?" Kim's mom asked.

"Yeah. The guy who carried her here from school." She replies with a confused look on her face.

"Jack? No. He's not my boyfriend, actually." Kim paused to look at her mom, "We are in the same school." She added.

"Oh. My bad. I'll leave now, I have some other people to see too." The doctor said and shut the door.

Kim literally choked when she heard 'Boyfriend' and 'Jack' together in a sentence meant for her. She saw her mom smiling at her from a distance. What was she possibly thinking? Kim made a straight-face and cleared her throat.

"What, may I ask, are you smiling about, Mum?" She asks in her best British accent. She picks up a glass of water which was kept on a table beside her bed.

"You and Jack, honey. A heaven-made match."

Kim spat out the water in her mouth.

"What?" She asked, wiping her drool with her hand.

"Jack and ..." A call from her work interrupts her. "Kim, I have to leave now. I'll see you at night." Ms. Crawford kissed Kim's forehead and shut the door.

It was all alone but somehow Kim needed it. She leaned deeper onto her pillow sighing. 'Liar. You didn't come back.' She said and switched on the TV.
