Chapter 12

Kim yawned back and sighed deeper, crushing her face in the pillow. "Stop." She groaned at her mother for spreading out the curtains, the sunlight directly hitting her in the face. Kim pulled her blanket to her head, as protection but her mother pulled it from her, allowing the A.C.'s cool temperature to touch her bare skin.

"Mom." Kim groaned at her. "Let me sleep." She said as she folded her knees to her chest, warming them up.

"It's 11 already. Don't be sleeping beauty anymore." Ms. Crawford leaned in Kim's ear and screamed.

"Alright, fine." Kim said as she sat on her bed, rubbing her eyes. She bent forward to stretch her back and yawned as she scratched her hair. Kim reached her hand to wipe the sweat from her philtrum.

The smell of mud and grass lingering in her sweatshirt's sleeve fold caused her to smile, making her unaware of her environment. Kim closed her eyes again, dreaming last night. The magical one she experienced with Jack.

"Kim, honey, is that grass in your hair?" Her mom asked as she ran her fingers in her hair, snapping Kim back into reality.

"What?" She asked as her eyes grew. She swiftly brushed her hair with her fingers, trying to hide the evidence.

"Where were you?" Ms. Crawford worriedly asked her, raising her eyebrows.

This was some sort of question which was problematic for sure. Firstly, Kim was not in a story-telling mood. Secondly, she would be in big trouble and lastly, it was meant to be a secret. A secret which was very special to Kim. A secret which she wished to last between her and Jack only.

"If I tell you, promise that you won't ground me or tell anyone." She asked her mom, making up a face.

"I'm listening." Ms. Crawford nodded.

"I uh, Last night I, um," Kim trails off.

She took a few seconds to gather up some courage and breath. "Last night I was with Jack." She told her, explaining the full story. How he texted her, took her to the park, didn't even complain about her being on his back, the biting, the scaring and the tickling, bringing her back here, and the kiss.

"After that, he left." Kim sighed after the explanation was done.

Kim stared at her mom weirdly smiling at her.

"That's it? It's over?" She asks.

Kim rolled her eyes at her. "Duh. You can't have it all in just 5 hours. But the point is, I liked it." She paused to shrug. "Even if it was 5 minutes, I would have thanked life for being so kind." Kim added as she blushed harder.

"Are those some feelings?" Ms. Crawford asked her daughter while she was still smiling.

Kim quickened her smile in an expressionless gesture. "No." She said, removing her hand from her cheek. This was why Kim didn't like story-telling with her mom. Her mom would guess the sequel even without the story's beginning.

"Don't lie to me. I know you better than yourself." Ms. Crawford shot at her.

Kim rolled her eyes at her mom. She noticed her stare as if she was hoping for an answer. "What?" She snapped.

"You like Jack, don't you?" Her mother asked the question as if she was obvious about reality.

"I've told you, he's just a friend." Kim answered casually.

"Should I tell the doctor about your outing with prince charming last night?"

"You promised that you wouldn't." Kim worriedly said.

"On one condition, admit what is true." Her mother replied as she sipped her hot coffee.

Kim glared at her mother.

But on the other hand, she was not wrong either. Why was it that she experienced such feelings only with Jack? Why did she want to see him only when she injured her foot? Why did holding hands with him only felt like floating on clouds? Why did his peck felt different? Why did his touch felt different than anyone else?

"Alright, it may be true that I have some feelings for him. But I am unsure about them. Unsure about all of them." Kim slowly processed the words out her mouth, and she covered her face with her hands.

"Aw, you two would be too cute to tolerate." Her mom squealed.

Kim's expressionless face turned to a frown. An unsure one.

"What's wrong, sweetheart?" Ms. Crawford asks after noticing her expression.

"But what if he doesn't feel the same way?" She asked.

"Don't ask those stupid TV questions. I'm sure he does. If he did not, then why'd he come to you at night in the first place? Why'd he bring you all the way to the hospital, that too in his arms?" Ms. Crawford stuffed more questions in her brain.

Kim removed her hands from her face, staring at the bed-sheet. She turns her head up to her mom, gazing straight at her.

"Look, here is the thing, even if we got together, what if he got tired of me? He may seem like it, but he's the total opposite type of guy. And I know them. Why would he even find me interesting? I mean, he could have pretty girls surrounding him at his one snap." Kim said. Her voice became unsure with every single word of the sentence.

Now that she had said it, Kim became even more insecure about her feelings. She might have said it in a flow, but her emotions did not maintain the same speed. Kim felt her eyes glistening. She tried very hard to push back the water evolving in her eyes.

"Will you not even try?" Ms. Crawford asked.

She shook her head, "Not for the sake of our friendship. Or for the sake of anything that is between us." She said, trying to maintain her glistening eyes.

"I had my imagination held high." Her mother replied in a dis-heartened tone.

"Mom, I can't risk losing a good friend over your imagination." Kim told her.

The more she thought about it, the more she felt herself suffering. Kim tried to shake away her thoughts, but she could not. Why did she admit having feelings for him? She could not hold back her tear anymore.

She wipes it off with her sweatshirt's cuff.

"I am so sorry, honey." Her mother walked her way to her, folding her in her hug. Ms. Crawford slightly rubbed Kim's head and kissed her on it. "Let it go, Kim." She whispered lightly in her ear.

Kim nods at her mother. "I will."

Someone interrupts by knocking at the door. It must be the doctor again after she was turned at the 7 a.m. meeting as Kim was fast asleep. "Come in." Kim said as she pulled away.

"I see you are finally awake." She joked.

Kim smiled at her. "Hey, Doctor." She greeted.

"2 steps in front. Now slightly lift your leg, be careful." She helped Kim as she lost her balance. Kim slowly lets go of her hand as she walks normally like a normal person.

"I see some good news." The doctor smiled at Kim and Ms. Crawford. "Take some rest. Ms. Crawford, may I talk to you for a second?" She set off Kim to her bed and walked out of the door with her mom, shutting the door behind her.

Kim sat alone at her bed, still thinking of Jack. She sighed because it was the only thing that she could do.

She lied down, putting her hands behind her head, closing her eyes, memorizing those sweet memories of last night. She took out her phone to grin at their awkward conversation once again.

Kim remembered the moment when he ran his fingers in her hair. She frowned, for not seeing him in the eyes, regretting every single moment her eyes did not meet his.

"I have my ways." She giggled at the blue screen of her phone.

"Thank you so much, Doctor." Her mom entered the room.

The sudden clicking of the doorknob startled Kim, causing her phone to fall straight on her face. She moaned as she rubbed her nose, trying to ease up the pain. "That is why you should knock before entering." She told her mom.

"Sorry." Her mom apologized as she held her hands in surrender.

Another knock from the door interrupted. "Kim Crawford?" A nurse called from the door.

"Yeah. That's me." She said as she raised her hand.

"Some guy is there to meet you. From Seaford High."
