Chapter 30

Kim slowly walked on the grass, the late-afternoon wind battling with her hair. Her feet stopped on a random spot and she rotated her head to the right, figuring out where Jack could possibly be.

She went to the bench, where they used to be and it turns out her choice was right because that's exactly where he was. Kim stopped dead in her track and Jack lifted his gaze from the ground to hers. The shocked expression was evident on both of their faces and their lips were parted in the same manner.

"Hey," Jack began first, clearing his throat.

Kim closed her mouth. What was she supposed to say? He greeted with a 'Hey', she could do a 'Hi' too.

"Hi." She sheepishly smiled at him.

He gestured for her to sit down, and she followed- taking the other end of the bench. Kim began chewing on her lower lip, repeatedly tucking strands of her hair behind her ear. While doing so, she kept sneaking glances at Jack, who was doing the same.

Their eyes met and they instantly blushed, looking away.

It was a lot harder than she thought.

But was she here to watch a couple of kids playing in the sand or watch the sunset and write a 248 lines poem on it? Definitely not. Giving herself a mental thumbs-up, Kim decided to speak, but the outcome was something else,

"We need to talk." She and Jack speak in unison.

Kim nods at him and he does the same.

"You first." At the same time again.

She blushed, looking away while Jack just cleared his throat. The tension in the air had started to thicken again- something exactly which neither of them wanted. Someone had to start a conversation.

And Kim decided to play that role.

She snapped her head in his direction. "I wanna say something."

Jack nodded.

"I broke up with him."

"Oh." He pressed his lips in a straight line, but even then, Kim didn't miss the chance to catch the tiniest glimpse of a smile dancing on his lips.

She tore her gaze away from him, smiling and keeping her head down. Jack noticed this, and his urge to smile dropped.

"What?" He innocently asked.

Kim shook her head, still biting her smile. "Nothing."

After that, they sat in silence, none of them trying to speak anything else. Jack was tapping his foot on the ground impatiently while Kim sat still, twirling her hair around her finger.

"So..." Jack trailed off.

Kim lifted her head. "So?" She repeated.

"Why did you break up with him?" A small smile was plastered on his face as he asked this.

Kim opened her mouth to say something but soon closed it. She nervously chuckled, waving her hand dismissively. It was obvious that either he was really dumb or she was being teased.

The second possibility seemed more relevant.

"You know,..." She chuckled once again, "There is no specific reason. I just... it wasn't really going well between us."

He smirked. "And why is that?"

That made her lose her temper. "DON'T ACT ALL OBLIVIOUS, JACK. YOU VERY WELL KNOW THE REASON WHY WE BROKE UP. BUT IF YOU AND YOUR EGOTISTICAL EARS STILL WANNA HEAR IT, IT'S BECAUSE I LIKE 'YOU', NOT HIM."

By the time her explanation ended, Kim's oxygen taking capacity had been deceived by her lungs. She mentally slapped herself for saying that all too loudly, and now she was clearly regretting it. Her cheeks and ears were on fire, while Jack seemed completely relaxed.

And that embarrassed her even more.

"I'm sorry..." She awkwardly apologized. "I didn't mean to shout at you like that."

"Don't worry. I think it was cute." He poked the inside of his cheek with his tongue, preventing his laugh. "But, how do I know you're not lying?" He teased her further, earning a glare from Kim.

"Do you want me to go all Bruce Lee on you?" Her glare became colder.

Jack waved dismissively, still smiling. "You won't."

"I hate it when you're right." She huffed, in annoyance. "But, still, I think you should listen to this-"

"I broke up with Blake because I like you, Jack. Not him. I guess, since the day you..."

"Okay, listen. I don't know how or when. But I like you, and that only matters right?"

Jack nodded, widening his smile. "Me too." He confessed, earning a chuckle from Kim. They tore their gaze away, grinning like absolute idiots.

"So, are we, like, a couple now?" Jack questioned.

Kim shook her head. "Not until you officially ask me out."

He whined at that. "Do I have to?"

"Yes."

"Okay." He cleared his throat, twisting in her direction. "Kim Crawford, will you do the honor of being my girlfriend?"

She cocked an eyebrow at him. "I don't hear a 'please'."

Jack's smile dropped, and so did his jaw. He closed his mouth, licking his lips. "Alright, alright, fine."

"Kim Crawford- seriously, can't you just say 'yes' to me already?"

She smacked the back of his head. "No, I can't."

"Of course, you can't." He sarcastically rolled his eyes at her.

"Ask me out. I don't have all day."

Jack huffed in annoyance, rolling his eyes. He slid closer to her, closing the gap between them, and took her hands within his. Giving her hands a gentle amount of squeeze, he began,

"Kim Crawford, you are definitely one of the most beautiful people I've ever met in my life till this date. And by beautiful, I mean both inside and out. So, please don't make me feel any more awkward than I'm already feeling, and grace me by being my, Jack Brewer's, girlfriend."

Kim bit her lip that was already stretched to her ears, and she nodded like a three-year-old getting candy.

"I will."

Both of them chuckled, parting their hands and still grinning like absolute idiots, and returned to their positions. Kim closed her eyes, resting her head on Jack's shoulder peacefully while his hand went around her shoulder, holding her securely.

"So now that we're official," He began. "I get to call you ba...by?" Finishing that sarcastically on purpose, he intensely looked in her eyes.

Kim glared at him, "Yeah, call me that and I'll slit your tongue in half."

Boyfriend or not, he was annoying.

Happy New Year, guys!!!!
