Chapter 14

Kim finally zipped her last bag before walking towards the window for the nineteenth time. She glanced at the clock hung over her head which read 7:17 am in the morning. She then stands in the centre of her room, shuffling the weight of her body from her right to left foot.

"I'll come at 7 in the morning tomorrow." She mimicked her mother's tone.

She sat down on the bed with her cheek relaxing on her hand and tapping her foot continuously on the tiled floor until she receives a notification bell from her phone "Sorry for the late. Come to the reception." from her mom.

"Finally." Kim gasps and hangs her bag on her shoulder and one on her fist. Taking the key, she walks out as she locks the door.

Kim rushed her way out of the hallway. She stops in front of the elevator, folding her hands and tapping her foot again at the tiled floor. Seeing the doors opening, she gets inside sighing and adjusting her scarf.

Kim walked to the reception where she saw her mom standing there. She returns her wave at her. She slowly jogs to the receptionist and hands him over the key before turning to her mom.

"I thought you wouldn't show up until next year." She playfully mocks Ms. Crawford.

"I said I'm sorry." She replied as she took hold of the bag which Kim held by her arm. They push their way out of the glass doors, slowly approaching the parking lot. Kim watched her mom go to the back of their car and reaching her hand to her pocket for the car keys.

"What took you so long?" Kim asked as she brushed her hair out of her face. It was a little windy outside.

"Your surprise."

"What surprise?" Kim asked again, looking around her.

"Hey, Kim." Shelby popped out from the right side of her mother and Jack from the left.

"What?" Kim asked in surprise which turned in a smile as 2 seconds passed. She tightly hugged Shelby and squealed out loud but trailed off when it was Jack's turn. "It's good to see you." She stood frozen, sharing a smile.

Jack nods at her. "Me too."

Kim smiled at the floor before turning to her mom.

"What are they doing here?" She questioned as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

"They insisted to come." She told her.

It was a lie. Her voice proved it.

Kim watched, Jack, and Shelby mouthing the words 'No' and 'It was all her' behind Ms. Crawford. She tries very hard not to giggle. Her eyes were fixed on Jack's until he moves his gaze to the floor as he realise Shelby staring and smirking at them.

"Let's get inside, shall we?" Kim's mom asks and all of them nod in agreement.

Kim watched her mother getting on the driver's seat, Jack in the back seat, and Shelby sitting on the seat beside her mom. "Where do I sit?" She questions as she looks at the only remaining seat beside Jack.

"Beside Jack, duh." Shelby replied as she winked at Ms. Crawford.

Kim nervously bites her lip and nods.

She reaches the car door and gets inside. She turned her face the other way, not ready to face Jack. Kim took grab of her seatbelt and locked it in, still looking out of the window.

"Are you okay?" Jack asked her after noticing her weird behaviour.

She nodded in the reply.

Kim realized his stare at her even from the back side of her head. She brushed her hair with her fingers as a try for acting normal. Jack raised an eyebrow at her but lowered it as he turned his head to the front, letting a smirk emerge on his face.

Kim saw his reflection in the window glass. When she sees that he's not staring anymore, she turns her head to the front.

"How's your foot now?" Shelby who was sitting in the front, asked her.

She lets a second pass for allowing Shelby's question to sink in her brain. She starts nervously, "It's um, good. Yeah." She nodded at the end of her answer, making a convincing gesture.

"Thank god it is because someone missed sparring with someone." She said as she looked at Jack in the mirror, teasing him.

He gave the death-stare and she held her hands in surrender.

Kim blushed inside. 'He missed me?'

"When are you joining?" Shelby pops another question.

"Probably after 2 months." Kim answered back.

"What?" Jack and Shelby scream/say at the same time.

The screaming caused Kim to bounce in her seat. "But I thought you are fine." Jack says, turning his head to face Kim.

"I am fine. I just have to rest." She replied.

Silence.

"So someone will still be missing sparring with someone." Shelby mocked Jack again.

"I'll see you. Just wait." Jack mouthed the words and Shelby nodded, gesturing an 'okay' as his reply.

Kim watched the two of them making weird faces at each other. She interrupts their little mouthed-conversation with a giggle, "You two can talk with words." She popped her head to Shelby from the back.

"I like the crush better." Shelby said to Jack.

His eyes widened at her words. "Shelby, my friend, I think there's a fly on your head." He said as he reached the pocket of his jeans and threw a kit-kat at her.

"Ow. Are you out of your mind?" She said, scratching her head on the spot where he indirectly hit her.

Kim giggled at their actions until her stomach ached and a tear came out of her eye, smudging her eye liner. She wiped it off with her finger, smudging it even more.

"Kim, your eye." Jack says, pointing to her eyes.

"What?" She asked. He pointed to her eyes again.

Kim popped her head in front of the mirror, noticing her smudged eyeliner. She leaned more and more as she reached her eye to fix it but was interrupted by her mom, "Kim, sit down. I can't see the back."

She sat back, tucking her seat belt.

"Don't worry, Kim. Jack can fix it for you, right Jack?" Shelby asked, turning her head to him.

"I can what?" He asked with the most confused-shy look ever on his face.

"Fix the eye liner, Jack." She repeated, turning her voice to a threating tone.

He nodded and turned to Kim.

"Just wipe the wing." She said and closed her eyes, waiting for his finger to touch her eye's outline.

Jack leaned towards Kim, taking her face in his hands and fading the black line away with his thumb. Kim's breath striking his face only made it difficult for him to look her in the eyes. He somehow managed to back away and say "Done."

Kim opened her eyes and checked in the mirror. "Thank you." She smiled at him.

He nodded.

Silence.

The sound of screeching tyres made Kim realise that they have reached home. She unbuckled her seat belt and stepped out of the car. She stretched her arms and turned to her mom. "Welcome home." She murmured.

Kim reached the doorsteps, fixing her hair. She glared at everyone when no one opened the door. "Is there any problem?" She asks.

"Kim, promise me, once you get inside, you'll not lose your senses or say anything without thinking." Jack took her by her shoulders and asked seriously.

She looked at Shelby and her mom. They were staring at their shoes.

"Okay." Kim says weirdly and Jack lets go of her shoulders.

"You first." He said as he opened the door for her.
