Chapter 17

It was 8:19 p.m. Kim came out of the shower, her honey-blonde hair being slightly wet and her hands engaged in rubbing them with a towel. She sat in front of her vanity-mirror, soaking the body-lotion in her arms and legs.

There was a very brief smile on her face since the evening. The evening of the same day.

She slid past her working desk, taking her algebra textbook, and then colliding on her bed. She lied down, the back of her head crushed in the pillows and her book hovering in front of her face.

Kim closed her eyes and hugged her book with the smile still being on her face. She sighed as she placed her hand over her cheek, the one she had clenched with... him.

"Kim?" Her mom called from the door.

Kim opened her eyes and turned her head only to see her mom all dressed up leaning over her door. "Yes?" She calls to her.

Ms. Crawford reached to her bed and shifted the sheets, making some room for herself as she sat down beside Kim. She slowly begins, "You know, it's been a long time since we went out for dinner. So, I was thinking....." She cuts off sheepishly.

Kim looks around and then at her mother. "Cool, let's go out to eat." She tries to complete her sentence.

"No, no, no. By 'we' I meant me and your dad. It's kind of a date." She said.

"Oh." Kim replied with a sigh.

After moment of silence, she starts again. "Shouldn't you go then?" Kim asks her mom as she turns the pages of her book.

"Alright. Close the door." Ms. Crawford replied cheerfully and went out of the room. The sound of her heels clashing with the staircase could be heard from a mile.

Kim sat in her bed, then throwing the book which she had in her hands to her desk. She sat in the same position until there was a sound of screeching tyres coming from her driveway.

She smiled and jumped off her bed, turning to her speakers and putting on 'Dangerous Woman' by Ariana Grande at a volume loud enough to be heard in every corner in the house, but at the same, low enough so that the neighbours wouldn't show up at her porch with their arms folded and a hateful face.

Kim slid swiftly down the stairs and ended her way straight to the kitchen. She grabbed some ice cubes, cocoa and milk and made herself a real quick chocolate smoothie as she sang along with Ariana.

She picked a straw from the drawers and planted it in the smoothie, taking in small sips. She was humming the 'somethin bout' part when she reached her room, only to find none other than thee Jack Brewer trying to climb up her terrace.

Her smile drops.

"Jack." She exclaims as she runs up to him, turning down the music and keeping her smoothie on her desk. Kim tightly hugs his arm and pulls him up. She wiped the beads of sweat formed due to the sight she saw seconds ago from her forehead as she panted while taking support of her knees.

Once she catches her breath, Kim punches him hard on his shoulder, the real, hard one.

"Ow. What was that for?" Jack asks her, rubbing his shoulder. Hi voice was toneless, as if nothing strange just happened.

"What was that for? You could've injured yourself real bad or worse died, you idiot." She speaks as she takes small strokes of air in between.

He watched blankly at her. "Get in." Kim commanded.

She dragged him inside her room by his sleeve. She then quickly closed and locked the glass door of the terrace which was attached to her room, followed by drawing the purple curtains over them.

"Whoa. What are you doing?" Jack asked once Kim was done.

"What if I ask you the same question?" She countered, folding her hands around her arm.

"I forgot to give you something." Kim raised one eyebrow at his statement.

"Then, also. You do realize we have a door." She says.

"Your dad was there plus I thought it would be fun to sneak into your room rather than 'Hi, sir. I forgot to give something to your daughter.' BTW, he owns an amazing car." He replied cheerfully to her, using hand guns and winking eyes, the 'signature Jack Brewer' style as a gesture.

"He also owns an amazing gun." Kim mimicked his tone.

Jack's smile faded.

"Look, Jack. It doesn't matter, okay? Anything would be worse than you lying on a hospital bed." She said with a look of worry on her face.

His contagious smile returned on his face

"That's really nice of you, Kimberly." He said patting her shoulder.

Kim's eyes widened at the sound of the usage of her full name, and that too coming from him. She glared at him with venom eyes. "How do you know my full name?" The venom in her voice was absolutely crystal clear.

"Haven't I told ya? I have my ways, Kimberly." Jack said sarcastically, leaning over her as if she was a 3 year-old.

"You say that again, and I'll slit your tongue in half." Kim replied, the poison still being visible.

"Oh, really? Kimb-" Before he could finish, Kim flipped him, crashing his body on the wooden floor. He opened his eyes from the pain with Kim's victorious face being the only thing in his view.

"Why do you always go ninja on me?" He said, standing up while taking support of her bed.

It was her turn of being sarcastic. "I did warn ya, didn't I?" She said as she pretended to check on her fingernails.

Jack kept a hand on his back as he stood up, bending down because of the pain. He somehow managed to stand straight, but the hand still placed on the back as a sign of 'no joking when it's Kim'.

"Why do you hate your name? I think it's kind of cute." He asked her.

Kim lets out a quite sigh and sits on her bed, tugging a strand of her semi-wet blonde hair behind her ear. She sadly hangs her face and clenches the sheets placed neatly on her bed.

"I don't know. It just doesn't define me. I mean, I'm not one of those girly, pink, perky sort of girl. I'm just......... Kim, the girl who does karate, skateboarding and sweaty activities which the other girls probably consider 'gross'." She lets out a silent laugh.

Jack gave her a cozy smile and sat down beside her. "Kim, you are no doubt the most amazing girl I've ever seen. You're not like the others. You don't pretend to be nice, you don't fake things, you don't keep agreeing with people just to fit in. The fact that you choose to be yourself makes you ten times better than any other girl." Jack said leaning his head over hers, placing his arm around her.

"You think so?" She sweetly questions, leaning her head as well.

"Mmmhmm." He nods.

Kim smiles at his gesticulation, being heavily attracted by the shine of his dark brown eyes staring at her. She uncomfortably shrugs to divert herself, opening her mouth to say something.

"What did you forget?" Kim paused before continuing, "To give me?"

Jack stood up, making Kim stand too. He revealed a small, silver pendant out of his jean's pocket. Kim's eyes brightened at the sight. She clears her throat before responding back.

"It's beautiful, Jack. Where'd you get it from?" She said, caressing the two, identical pearl decoration hanging from the loop.

"I, uh, found it in the trash-can at Captain Corndog." He humoured as he opened the lobster lock.

Kim's smile dropped. She punched him lightly on his shoulder.

"Kidding. It was in a store in the mall and I thought it would look good on you. Now, turn around." Jack ordered her.

Kim turned and scooped her hair out of her neck, making way. She closed her eyes, smiling to herself as she sensed Jack's hand running on the back of her neck.

"Looks perfect." He complimented her, straightening the chain.

"Thank you so much." Kim squealed as she drew her hair back.

There was perfect and a cozy silence, and a beautiful exchange of smile between them until Kim decided to shatter it with her words. "It's getting late. You should probably head back home."

Jack nodded in agreement. He drew the curtains away and opened the blinders, preparing himself for jumping off Kim's terrace. Kim caught his sleeve again. "Use the door." She said, shoving him inside.

She walked him down the stairs and then to the doorsteps. She shot him one last smile before closing the door.

"Can I see you in the park tomorrow at 5?" Jack asked.

"Yes, I think." She replied, unsure of her answer.

Silence.

Jack was staring at her with his eyes wanting something more than a 'good bye'. Kim planted a quick good-night kiss on his cheek before slamming the door. "I'll see you in the park."

Jack's eyes widened at her actions, at the action of her lips softly touching his cheek. He found no other option than walking away and smiling like an idiot with a hand over his cheek.
