"He might not wake up?"

Robin's POV:

22 days.

It has been 22 days since I got the call that Finney was hurt. 22 days since Gwen and I followed the ambulance to the hospital, just to find out he fell into a coma while he was on the ambulance.

Finney's father hasn't come back. Ever since he left town that day, he hasn't come back home.  He hasn't even shown up to see if his son is alive or not. What a coward.

To be honest, I'm glad he didn't. He should be glad too because I don't think I could have stopped myself from doing something terrible to him if I ever saw him again.

Gwen has been staying with my family and I. My older brother just went away for college, so there was a room open for her. And when Finney is ready, there is a guest room that's free for him too.

"Hey Robin, ready to go?" Gwen asked while poking her head through the slightly opened door.

"Yeah, let's go." I said while grabbing my backpack.

Everyday since the incident, Gwen and I visited the hospital before school. We always get up extra early in the morning to make sure we have time.

Gwen and I walked outside and down to the car. We both hopped in and I drove us to the hospital. As soon as Gwen and I entered the building, I saw Ms. Johnson sitting at the front desk.

Since we have come to the hospital everyday for almost a month, the receptionist has grown to know us a bit. She really likes Gwen and I.

'Hi Ms. Johnson!" Gwen said excitedly while walking up to the front desk.

"Good morning! You're here earlier than normal." Ms. Johnson said, looking up from the paperwork on her desk.

"Yeah, we woke up earlier. How is he?" I said smiling at her. Ms. Johnson scrunched up her face sadly before responding to me.

"He was having a lot of difficulty breathing last night. He started to slip away but luckily the nurses and doctors were able to stabilize him, for now at least." she said in a gentle voice.

"What do you mean by that." I said, no emotion in my voice.

"He's been in a coma for a very long time, and normally the longer people are in a coma, the less likely they are to wake up. I'm trying my very best to make sure he wakes up, but with his vitals recently, it doesn't look good."  she explained.

"He might not wake up?" Gwen asked while trying to fight off tears.

I took a minute to process what she had said.  It felt like hours that I stood there, just staring at Ms. Johnson.

Eventually I broke out of my trance and reached over to Gwen. Her eyes were glassy as she kept repeating 'no' over and over under her breath.  I pulled her into a hug and she burried her face in my shoulder.

I tried my best to keep my composure for Gwen, but I couldn't help letting one singular tear fall.

"Gwenny?" I whispered gently to her.

"Y-y-yeah." her voice cracked.

"Come on." I said as I pulled her out of the hospital. I pulled her onto the sidewalk and all the way into the car.

As I was starting to pull out of the hospital, I remembered we had school today.

"Gwenny? Are you staying home today?" I asked her softly.

"No. I just want everything to be normal. Even if it's only normal for today." she said while looking out the car window.

"OK." I responded.

We sat in silence for the rest of the drive, until we got to school.

"Let's go." I said while getting out of the car.

We walked into school side by side, heads as equally full and hearts as equally shattered.
