~Chapter Twenty One~

"You brought back John Gilbert? That was your big "Save Elena" move?" Damon shouts at his brother.

Maddy sat on Stefan's bed with her legs crossed. When she had woke up this morning to the two Salvatores having an argument, she never expected it to be over Stefan bringing Elena's biological father back to Mystic Falls. John Gilbert was an absolute pain in the ass. Of course, Maddy didn't have a problem with him, he wasn't stupid enough to start something with her. Madison happened to be the only vampire he could happily tolerate.

"I went to go look for Isobel, and I get John instead. He said he can help us, and we're desperate. Besides, you brought Maddy here, what's the difference?" Stefan questions.

"We're not that desperate, Stefan. The guy tried to barbecue me! Maddy never tried to kill me, so don't even try comparing those two." Damon shakes his head.

"I don't get why you would bring him here if he causes so much drama. Is Elena ok with it?" Maddy asks.

"Guys, Bonnie's new witch friend is working with Elijah, so we have to assume that the moonstone was never destroyed. Elena is putting all of her faith into some deal that she made with Elijah to keep everyone safe. I mean, do you trust Elijah? I don't trust him. He's an Original, he can't be trusted. It's not like we can just go up and kill him, because apparently, he can't die!"

"Yeah well you didn't trust me either, Stefan, and all I was doing was trying to help you protect Elena, so your judgment kind of sucks." Maddy sighs.

"No, my judgment was clouded with you and I'm sorry for that, but this is different from Elijah. We don't know him." Stefan states.

Maddy shakes her head at the Salvatore deciding not to push any further on the Elijah subject. She wasn't completely sure how she felt about the Original. He didn't make her uncomfortable and the idea of trusting him didn't seem too bad. It would take a big burden off of everyone's shoulders, especially hers if they did trust him. It would put her mind at ease to know that they had a stronger and older vampire on their side before she died, and Elijah seemed to want to help.

"I'm still waiting for the part where John Gilbert is the answer." Damon raises his brows.

"He knew about the sacrifice, Isobel told him. He said he knew of a way to keep Elena safe." Stefan states, gaining more of Madison's interest.

"And how do we do that?" The older Salvatore asks.

"He's not talking. At least not to me anyway."

"Probably because he doesn't like you," Maddy speaks, letting out a small chuckle before a wave of aggressive coughing took over.

"Hey hey hey, are you alright?" Stefan questions, rushing over to her.

She pulls her hand away from her mouth, a small splatter of dark red almost black blood covering her palm. Nodding her head, she quickly wipes her hand on her black skinny jeans and stands up giving Stefan a small smile.

"Yeah, I'm good."

"That didn't sound good." Damon narrows his eyes at her.

Stefan's eyes scan over her before he speaks again. "Are you sure your ok, you don't look very well?"

"Gee thanks Stefan, those are the words every girl wants to hear." She jokes.

"He means you look sick. Have you fed today?" Damon questions.

"Yeah," she nods. "Like an hour ago."

That was a big a lie. She hadn't been able to keep anything down in the past two days. Every time she tried feeding she threw it right up. Whether it was from a human, an animal, or a bag, she could drink it.

"Guys, I'm fine." She sighs as the two brothers stare at her in curiosity.

"Ok," Stefan says, backing away from the annoyed girl. "Hey, I'm sorry about Rose." He turns to his brother.

"Whatever. I knew the woman for five minutes." He shrugs.

"Good to know you threw away our potential relationship for a woman you only knew five minutes. You sure know how to make a girl feel special." Maddy rolls her eyes, gaining a look of annoyance from Damon.

She knew he felt something for Rose and although it hurt a little, she wasn't upset. What she was upset about was that Damon wouldn't express his feeling about Rose dying. She hated when he acted like he was some almighty god that never feels emotion.

"Right." Stefan nods, agreeing with Maddy. "And you cared about her after five minutes. I wonder what that means?"

"It means I care, Stefan. It means I'm changing, evolving into a man capable of greatness. Better watch your back, because I may just have to go get a hero-hairdo of my own, and steal your thunder." Damon says making Madison chuckle as she gets up and leaves the room.

"What's wrong?" Stefan asks Caroline as she opens the door, letting the Salvatore in.

"Tyler knows about you, Maddy, and Damon. He knows that Damon killed Mason. I didn't say a word. He thinks Maddy knows about it too."

"It's that woman, Jules. She had a run-in with Damon." He sighs, running a hand through his hair.

"Tyler was so upset. The look on his face, he was so betrayed." Caroline frowns.

"Wow, this is bad. I don't even know where Madison is right now, she just keeps running off and disappearing."

Caroline stiffens, already knowing why Maddy had been so distant and isolated. "You're not gonna tell Damon, are you?" She changes the subject.

"No! He already wants to kill him. He thinks all werewolves should die, and he's not wrong to think that, Caroline. I mean, what if Tyler tries to retaliate? He has every right to. He could get himself killed."

"Well, we're not gonna let that happen. We have to get to him and reason with him before he does something stupid. You have to talk to him. Just try to explain, you know? You always know the right things to say, okay? He and I...we're friends." She sighs.

"Alright. I'll try to find Maddy, she always has a way with words and she knows how to deal with wolves. For his own sake, let's hope he doesn't try to attack her, because if she doesn't kill him Damon and I will." Stefan warns.

Caroline looks around the room trying to avoid his gaze as she speaks. "I don't know if Madison's strong enough to handle him right now."

Stefan furrows his brows in confusion. "What do you mean?" He questions. "She's damn near the strongest person in Mystic Falls."

"I mean Maddy's dying, Stefan. She got bit saving me from Tyler during the full moon." She rambles out.

It felt good to tell him and get it off of her chest. Telling Bonnie was an accident, and it wasn't enough. She wanted everyone to know before it was too late.

"You mean she's been dying this entire time and hasn't told anyone?" Stefan questions his nostrils flaring in anger.

"She begged me not to tell anyone. I tried but, the thought of her dying alone after everything she's done for us makes me wanna cry. And the thought that she's dying because of me makes me wanna cry even more." She rants.

"Caroline, I'm trying to keep my cool because we're friends but please shut up and stop making this about you." He sighs.

"I'm sorry. Please don't kill him, he doesn't even know he bit her."

Stefan rolls his eyes at Madison's selflessness. Of course, it was like her to spare everyone else's feelings. To carry the burden and pain alone instead of letting anyone take care of her. It was hard for Stefan to not rush over and snap Tyler's neck like a twig, but he knew that's not what Maddy would want.

Between the two Salvatores, he couldn't afford to be the reckless one. God only knows how Damon would react once he found out that one of the most important people in his life was about to die. Especially after losing Rose. One thing Stefan knew for sure though, was when Maddy died, a piece of the Salvatores would die too.

~~~~~~~~~~
Maddy sat in the woods with a frown on her face. She had tried hunting a rabbit or a deer to feed on, but her body had grown too exhausted. She hated being weak. Not being able to hunt or feed or defend herself was driving her crazy. So there she sat pouting away until she heard footsteps coming her way.
"Madison." Tyler greets, walking toward her with cold eyes.
"Tyler, hey. How are you doing after the full moon?" She questions with a small smile as she stands up and leans against the tree.
"I'm good." He sniffles, tightly gripping the stake he held behind his back. "I found Mason too."
"Oh, that's great. I told you he would turn up eventually." She smiles.
"He's dead." Tyler stares blankly. "But you already knew that didn't you?"
"Oh my god, Tyler I'm so sorry. No, I didn't know." She sighs, taking a step forward.
"Sure you didn't." He laughs sarcastically. "Don't worry though, I'm about to get even."
Before she could process what was happening, Tyler lunges at her knocking her to the ground. He pulls the stake out, holding it above his head ready to plunge into Madison's heart. Taking every bit of energy she has, she grabs his wrist stopping him from staking her, and brings her head up, roughly connecting it with his.
"What the hell are you doing, Tyler?" She shouts, backing away from him.
"Damon killed Mason. Stefan and Caroline knew, which means you knew too, so now I'm taking away someone they care about." He states, stalking towards her.
He was staring at her with hungry eyes. Maddy could tell he wanted revenge. He walked towards her like a predator does its prey. Maddy wasn't gonna lie when she thought he might actually have a chance of killing her. With the state she was in, she probably wouldn't be able to fight him off for long unless she snapped his neck. But she wasn't about to kill him, she knew he was just hurt.
"Tyler I swear to you I did not know your Uncle was dead, and I most definitely didn't have anything to do with it." She states trying to calm the werewolf down.
"Lies, all you vampires do is lie." He shakes his head.
As Tyler goes to lunge at her again she quickly moves out of the way. She was getting tired by the second and her arm was bleeding again. This wasn't what she wanted to be doing. If she wasn't dying, she would have no problem entertaining him until he got the anger out of his system. But she couldn't afford to fight him, the more she fought the more exhausted she got, and the more exhausted she got the quicker she would die.
"Tyler please, I can not do this with you right now." She begs.
"Why not, hmm? Aren't you supposed to be some strong badass vampire? You don't seem too strong to me." He states before trying to attack her again.
Quickly reacting, Maddy does something she had promised herself she would never do again. She screamed. She let out an ear-piercing scream, the birds fleeing from the trees and the ground vigorously shaking. Tyler grunts, falling to his knees as blood starts dripping from his ears and nose. The whole town of Mystic Falls Virginia could hear the scream. As many of them questioned what it was four vampires started to panic, already knowing who it was. Stefan, Damon, Katherine, and Elijah all cover their bleeding ears and look up to the sky watching the birds fly as far away as possible, some of them dropping dead before they could make it.
As her scream comes to an end, her nose starts to bleed. Her vision starts to blur and her head starts to spin. The last thing she sees before she passes out is a tall figure hovering over her in worry. Closing her eyes she lets the darkness overtake her body.
