~Chapter Thirty Three~

After a long exhausting night, Damon and Maddy slowly walk towards the Salvatore boarding house. There was a comfortable silence between them, their hands brushing over each other here and there.

"So, how do you feel?" Damon questions, stopping and standing in front of her.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean your humanity is back on. So what are you feeling right now?"

"I'm fine." She shrugs.

"That's it? You don't feel the urge to kick my ass or slap Elena around, maybe shove a knife or two into Stefan?"

"A little bit." She laughs.

"Ah, there it is." Damon smiles down at her.

"There what is?"

"That laugh. I missed it." He says, caressing her cheek.

"Are you going soft on me, Damon?" She narrows her eyes at him with a small smile.

"Only if you want me to."

"Stop it." She shakes her head, stepping away from him.

"Stop what?" He questions.

"Acting like we're a thing." She sighs. "I don't like when you do that."

"Maybe I want us to be a thing." He shrugs.

"Well, I don't!"

"Why not!"

"Because I'm not stupid, Damon! I know that eventually somewhere down the line something is gonna happen between you and Elena. I want someone who loves me and only me. You can't give me that, so stop acting like you can." She speaks before walking into the boarding house.

"What did you do with her?!" Elena shouts as the two of them enter.

"Will you please calm her down?" Damon asks, looking at Stefan.

"Don't talk like I'm not standing right in front of you."

"Please calm down." He says, looking down at her.

"You knew! Didn't you? You knew that if she harnessed all that power, that she would die, didn't you?"

"Yes. Yes, I knew." Damon nods.

Elena raises her hand to slap him but Maddy quickly catches it mid-air. "Are we seriously back at this?" She questions, letting go of her. "If you try it again I will break your hand."

"You're no better than him," Elena states, giving her a hateful glare.

Maddy looks at Stefan with an annoyed look. "Get your girlfriend before she makes me do something I'll regret."

Stefan quickly grabs Elena's hand pulling her a few inches away from Madison. Damon takes a step forward, now standing beside Maddy.

"You need to listen to me and prepare for what I'm about to say. Bonnie had to die. Klaus using Alaric's body was a total surprise. She wasn't prepared for that. And he wasn't going to stop, and we weren't going to be able to stop him until he knew she was dead. He had to believe it." Damon explains. "She cast a spell. Bonnie's okay."

~~~~~~~~~
Maddy sat on Damon's bed with her legs crossed over one another. She held a book in her hand, one that she had found lying around the Salvatore's room.
"Well, tonight was definitely something." Damon sighs, pouring himself a glass of bourbon.
"I told you I hated the sixties." Maddy laughs, looking up at him.
"At least we got your humanity back on." He smiles.
"Yeah, lucky me." She says sarcastically, pursing her lips.
"I like you better with your humanity on anyway." He shrugs, walking over to her. "You're not meant to be emotionless."
"Yeah? Then what am I meant to be." She questions, looking up at him.
"You are meant to be kind and caring and selfless. You're meant to be the girl I fell in love with back in 1864." He says, moving a piece of hair out of her face.
Before Maddy could respond Elena enters the room. "Am I interrupting?" She asks, glancing between the two.
"Nope." Maddy shakes her head giving her a small smile as she moves away from Damon.
"Ugh. Look. Klaus had to think she was dead. Your reaction had to be real." He rolls his eyes, sighing at the doppelgänger.
"I understand why you did what you did. Klaus was fooled, and Bonnie's alive." Elena states.
"Here's to duplicity." He says, raising his glass and taking a drink.
"But let's get one thing straight, Damon. Bonnie will not die for me, I will not let that happen."
"We need to kill Klaus, Elena. Real Klaus. Who will probably be coming to pay you and Maddy a visit soon now that he knows that Bonnie is dead? She's the only one who can do it." He speaks.
"We'll find another way."
"I hope so." Damon nods.
"Look, I shouldn't have tried to hit you." She sighs, crossing her arms.
"Apology accepted."
"And I shouldn't have been a bitch to you." She says, looking at Maddy who sends her a curt nod signaling that she forgave her.
"Let me be clear about something. If it comes down to you and the witch again, I will gladly let Bonnie die. I will always choose you." Damon states.
"And what if it was between me and Maddy?" She questions, raising a brow.
Damon glances a Maddy who sat there watching them intensely. "You're not gonna like the answer to that." He says, already knowing that he would never let Maddy die.
Elena stares at him for a second before speaking again. "Good night, Damon."
"Good night."
"And Maddy, I'm glad your humanity is back on." She smiles before leaving Damon's room.
"What was your answer?" Maddy asks curiously as she stands up and walks towards him.
"To what?"
"If it came down to me or Elena, who would you save?" She questions now standing in front of him.
"I would save you every time."
~~~~~~~~~~

Maddy awoke to the feeling of someone shaking her gently and calling her name.

"Maddy.." Elena whispers, waking the vampire from her slumber.

"What, Elena?" Maddy sighs, sitting up in her bed.

"I took the dagger out of Elijah."

"Ok, good for you. He isn't that big of a threat anyway." She shrugs, laying back down.

"I need his help but he said he won't talk to me unless you're there." The doppelgänger states, running a hand through her hair.

"And I'm guessing Stefan and Damon don't know about this?"

"No, they don't." She shakes her head.

"Mischief, I like it. I'll be down in a minute." She says, speeding over to her dresser and grabbing an outfit.

"Thank you." Elena smiles before leaving the vampire to get dressed.

After quickly throwing on her clothes and brushing out her hair, she makes her way downstairs, her heels clicking with each step.

"Alright, let's get this show on the road boys and girls." She smiles, stepping outside where Elena and Elijah waited for her.

"Madison, you look beautiful." The original smiles at her, seeming to forget Elena's presence.

"It comes naturally." She shrugs. "Glad to see you're alive and breathing again. Even if you are looking a little rough." She says, taking in his appearance.

"Ok," Elena clears her throat. "We better get going."

~~~~~~~~~~
"You look better," Elena states, looking at Elijah who sat in the passenger seat of her car drinking a blood bag.
Maddy sat in the back seat with her feet propped up and a pair of sunglasses covering her eyes. Although she was happy that Elijah was no longer "dead" in the Salvatore's basement, she didn't really wanna join Elena on her mission to figure out another way to kill Klaus. Elena was a big girl and could do it by herself, but Maddy was a good friend so she decided to suck it up.
"Where did you get the dagger?" Elijah questions.
"I'll tell you everything. But we have to work together, Elijah. I need your word." Elena states, making Madison let out a scoff.
"In case you forgot, the last time he tried giving you his word you shoved a dagger in his chest." Maddy laughs, resting her arms behind her head.
"Madison's right, your ability to make demands has long passed," Elijah says.
"No demands. I'm offering you my help. And in return, I want yours." The human negotiates.
"And why should I even consider this?"
"The same reason that you haven't killed me. You need my help to kill Klaus. And I need you. And I can already tell that you don't want Klaus getting his hands on Maddy." Elena states.
Before Elijah could respond, Elena's phone rings.
"There's Stefan." Maddy sighs as Elena answers it.
"Madison, I see you're back to your old self," Elijah says, giving her a small smile.
"Mmhm." She nods. "Why did you miss me?" She asks, lowering her sunglasses as she sits up, leaning toward him.
"I guess I did." He says, his eyes flickering down to her lips.
"Did you just think about kissing me?" She smiles, giving him a questioning look.
"I have no answer to that." He shakes his head, turning forward in his seat.
Maddy leans forward, her lips close to his ear. "I wouldn't mind if you did." She whispers, sending a chill down the Original's back.
Elijah clears his throat as she returns to the position she was in before and turns to Elena who was now off of the phone. He reaches his hand out, signaling for her to give it to him. Without hesitation, she sets her phone in his hand, which he shoves in his pocket.
"He's here." Elena states.
"Klaus is here?"
"He's taken over Alaric's body." She informs.
"Of course he has. One of his favorite tricks." He sighs, glancing back at Maddy who was scrolling through her phone reading the multiple texts she had received from both Stefan and Damon.
"Well, what are his other tricks? What is he going to do next? You're the only one who knows him." Elena says.
Elijah nods his head seeming deep in thought before he responds, "Yes, I do."
~~~~~~~~~~

The three of them arrived in front of the Lockwood mansion, Carol Lockwood opening the door after Elijah knocks.

"Elijah, Maddy, Elena! What are you doing here? What happened?" She questions, noticing how messy and ragged the man looked.

"I've had a bit of an incident, Carol. I'm hoping you could help." He speaks.

"Well, I'm on my way to a meeting, so I-"

"It won't take but a minute of your time." He compels.

"Of course. Anything you need." She smiles, letting the three of them in.

"Thank you." Elijah nods. "Well, first things first. I'm going to need a change of clothing."

"Well, we can try one of my husband's suits. I haven't boxed them up yet." The woman offers.

"Wonderful," Elijah states as she walks up the stairs.

"How did you know she's not on vervain?" Elena questions.

" 'Cause I'm the one who got her off it. Right before you and your friends killed me. Twice. If you'll excuse me. I'll be down in a moment." He says, also walking up the stairs.

Maddy slowly walks towards the stairs, tiptoeing up the first one but Elena is quick to catch her and grab her hand. "Where are you going?" She asks.

"To see Elijah," Maddy states as if it was obvious.

"He's getting changed."

"I know," she nods. "I wanna see what he's got under there." She says, a giddy smile appearing on her face as she wiggles her eyebrows.

"No, Maddy. Let him get changed in peace." Elena chuckles, looking at the girl in disbelief.

"Why not? He's cute. Aren't you curious?" She questions.

"No."

"Oh come on, like you haven't peaked at Damon a few times." She says, playfully rolling her eyes.

Elena contemplates for a second before quickly shaking her head. "That would be invading his privacy."

"Ugh," Maddy sighs, walking back down the stairs. "Well, when you put it like that you make me sound like a creep."

"Because you are being a creep." She laughs.

Maddy lets out a fake gasp while holding her chest. "I am not!" She whisper yells. "I'm just...curious." She shrugs with a smile.

~~~~~~~~~~
Maddy sat slouched on the Lockwood's couch, her glasses on top of her head. Elijah sat beside her, their bodies awfully close to each other, their thighs practically touching.
"So I assume that the Martin witches are no longer with us." Elijah questions, looking at Elena who sat across from them.
"Yeah, screw that Jonas guy. He was an ass." Maddy says angrily as she remembers what he did to her.
"No. I'm sorry." Elena apologizes.
"And Katerina? She would have been released from my compulsion when I died."
"Klaus took her. We think that she may be dead." Elena informs, cautiously glancing over at Maddy who adverted her gaze to her lap.
She had been trying to keep her mind away from Katherine. She didn't want to think about the fact that she might be dead.
"I doubt that. Not Klaus' style. Death would be too easy for her after what she did." Elijah shakes his head making Maddy let out a small sigh of relief.
"I don't understand. You say that you want Klaus dead, but you still made Katherine pay for betraying him." Elena says.
"I have my own reasons for wanting Katerina to pay. There was a time...I'd have done anything for Klaus."
"So you two were close?" Maddy questions, earning a nod from him.
"Yes. Klaus is my brother." He sighs, making both of the girls give him a shocked expression.
"I was not expecting that." Maddy mumbles.
"Yes, I'm a little behind on the times, but I believe the term you're searching for is "O.M.G." He states, glancing between them before taking a sip of tea.
"There's a whole family of Originals?" Elena asks.
"My father was a wealthy landowner in a village in Eastern Europe. Our mother bore seven children." He says.
"So your parents were human?"
"Our whole family was. Our origin as vampires is a very long story, Elena. Just know...We're the oldest vampires in the world. We are the Original family, and from us, all vampires were created." He explains.
"I don't get it. If he's your brother, why would you want him dead?" Maddy asks.
"I need some air. I'm still feeling a tad...dead. Come." He tells them as they leave the room and walk outside. "So as you've seen, nothing can kill an Original. Not Sun, not fire, not even a werewolf bite. Only the wood from one tree. A tree my family made sure burned."
"That's where the white ash for the dagger comes from." Elena states.
"Yes. The witches won't allow anything truly immortal to walk the earth. Every creature needs to have a weakness in order to maintain the balance."
"If the sun can't kill an Original, then why the hell is Klaus so obsessed with breaking the Sun and Moon curse?" Maddy asks, furrowing her brows.
"Right. The curse of the sun and the moon. It's all so...biblical-sounding, don't you think?" He smiles.
"What's so funny?"
"Klaus drew those pictures about the curse, didn't he?" Maddy sighs, piecing it together.
"You are very smart." Elijah smiles, looking down at her.
"So I've been told." She shrugs returning the smile.
"I don't understand. So Klaus drew the Aztec sketches about the curse?" Elena questions.
"Roman scrolls, African tribal etchings, and any other culture or continent we felt like planting in it."
"Why?"
"Easiest way to discover the existence of a doppelgänger or to get your hands on some long, lost moonstone is to have every single member of two warring species on the lookout." He says.
"So it's not Aztec at all?"
"Oh my gosh, this conversation is exhausting me." Maddy sighs, holding the bridge of her nose.
"The curse of the Sun and the Moon...is fake. It doesn't exist." Elijah states, walking away from them.
"What?!" Elena follows after him, dragging Maddy along with her.
"Klaus and I faked the sun and moon curse dating back over a thousand years." He says.
"But if there's no curse..."
"There's a curse. Just not that one. The real one's much worse. It's a curse placed on Klaus."
"What are you talking about?" Maddy questions.
"Klaus has been trying to break it for the last thousand years. And Elena is his only hope." He answers as Elena's phone starts vibrating in his pocket.
"What is this curse?" The doppelgänger asks.
"Your phone will not stop its incessant buzzing. Answer it, please." He says, handing her the cell phone, to which she answers.
"Stefan...what's wrong? No. No, no, no, no. Okay, I'll be right there." She sighs, hanging up the phone. "Klaus went after Jenna. I have to go to her."
"I'm afraid that wasn't part of today's arrangement."
"She's my family, Elijah. I have to. I'll be back. You have my word." She states.
"That doesn't mean anything to me until you live up to it. Madison will stay here until you come back." He says.
"Excuse me?" Maddy scoffs.
"Thank you," Elena says then runs off to her car.
"Yeah sure, just leave me alone with him!" Maddy calls out, throwing her hands in the air.
"Considering you wanted to see me naked I figured you wouldn't mind staying here," Elijah states, now standing behind her.
Maddy gasp, quickly turning around to face him. "I have no idea what you're talking about." She lies, crossing her arms.
"I believe your words were 'I wanna see what he's got under there'." He says, staring down at her with a small amused smile.
"You weren't supposed to hear that." She sighs, covering her face with her hands.
Elijah steps closer to her, gently removing her hands from her face. "Don't hide from me, you're too beautiful to do that."
Maddy stares at him for a second, her eyes scanning over his face. "Screw it." She sighs, standing on her tippy toes and attaching her lips to his.
Elijah quickly kisses her back without a moment of hesitation. His hands wrap around her waist, pulling her closer to him. After a few seconds, they pull away from each other, his hands still on her hips. He stares down at her, his eyes full of admiration.
"I know that I probably just gave you the best kiss of your life, but why are you looking at me like that?" She questions, looking up at him.
"Because, Madison, you are truly the most beautiful girl I've ever met."
