interview #10 @Hinchwood {series promotion}

1 What is the title of your series?

The Slider Series – with two books: Girls Who Play Guitars and Ellie Devine Rock Star

2 What inspired the idea of your series?

My story was inspired by the amazing music I listen to – and I really wanted to explore what it felt like to be in a band in the 1990s – from a female perspective.

3 How many books are in your series?

At the moment, there is one and a half! I'm currently writing the second one in the series with more to come!

4 Is it the only series on your profile?

Yes – you can start with Girls Who Play Guitars and go straight into Ellie Devine Rock Star

5 What do you desire readers take away from your series?

I want readers to feel transported back to the 1990s, and also realize that it's okay to be yourself, and go for your dreams. I'm really strong on making sure my characters grow and learning things about themselves along the way (whether they put that learning into practice is another thing!).

6 is your series complete or ongoing?

ongoing

7 What are your future plans for your series?

I'd love to explore my characters journey through fame and perhaps view it realistically – not everyone becomes the next Beatles or Taylor Swift. The struggle is real!

8 What would be a good piece of advice for someone who desires beginning to write a series?

I would recommend making sure you absolutely love your characters and put them in an environment where they're challenged to grow and evolve. You don't want your characters to stay on the same trajectory or keep making the same mistakes – you need plenty of room to challenge their growth. If you're excited about them and their world, and you care about them, it's much easier to write about them otherwise, it'll be a long, hard slog.

9 Do you prefer writing a series over a standalone novel?

I love a good standalone novel because I think everyone, even characters in a story, need a conclusion, or an ending at some point!

10 Who is your main character? Are there any similarities between you and your main character?

My main character is Ellie Devine and yes, she's very driven, focused and can get a little obsessed with things (and people).

11 What does your character go through in the series?

Ellie goes through a lot! She learns to trust, and to open up, and she learns that not everyone's out to get her all the time – that people are genuinely good. And she's going through a stack more in the next book too – phew – she's got a lot on her plate!

12 What does having readers for any of your stories mean to you

I love, love, love having readers, as I know somehow, someone somewhere gets me and gets my characters and my story! And I think readers help motivate me to write of course. When you see someone's binged every chapter it's a thrill. I also tend to write the stories I want to read, and that makes me so grateful that someone has taken a risk, and taken their time, to read my story.

 1 What type of stories do you like to read?

I've been reading so many music bios and autobiographies lately. It really helps with my understanding of the music biz and the mind of a musician. But outside of that genre, I love books that make you think a little – not too much politicizing but just enough to teach you something. My fave author is Tim Winton, a well-known Australian writer, and his language is just off-the-charts beautiful. *Sigh*

2 What type of music do you like to listen to?

All kinds of music. Well, kind of. I love catchy songs you can sing in the shower! I'm obsessed with Damon Albarn from Blur and Gorillaz and I love Maximo Park, another British band. But then I'll also listen to cheesy 80s and Madonna and old-school musicals. Music's all about the feels and what you crank up loud is all about what you need to fill your feels!

 3 What is one of your favorite stories that you've read on Wattpad?

There are so many cracking stories on Wattpad and I've read so many! I have to give a shoutout to and her rock fiction stories as they're just immersive and addictive! Start with Beautiful Disaster!

4 What do you believe is better for a story? {Quality or Quantity}

Honestly, I think both. If you can balance quality, as in making sure your spelling and grammar and formatting is correct enough and everything makes sense, and you have a good story to tell that's full of vibrant characters and you can keep that going and people want to read it, then you can have both. Quality just means making sure you know enough about the craft of writing to keep readers engaged, you can have spellos or grammar mistakes - everyone's forgiving if the story is compelling!

 5 Are you more likely to check out an ongoing or completed story?

I'm a completed story person – I love a good, solid conclusion and rounding out of all the twists and turns I've read. But if there's more...that's great too!
