Chapter 6 : Fist time at school

Years passed. Constance was now sixteen and Jane twelve years old. The two girls were standing in front of a building, having both a backpack -a khaki one for Jane and a red one for Constance- and their dog at their feet. Jane had her hair combed back, wearing a black cotton jacket, a black tee-shirt, blue jeans, and white shoes. Constance was taller than Jane, wearing a red cap, a black and red jacket, a white tee-shirt, black jeans, and black shoes.

- "Do we really have to go school? I mean, we don't needed it before..." told Jane.

- "It's important, if you have your diploma, you can find a nice job with a good salary and not having problems anymore," answered the blonde teen with blue eyes.

- "I would prefer staying with you..."

- "Don't worry, I'm sure you'll make new friends."

- "I'm not sure..."

Constance put a comforting hand on her sister's shoulder before beginning to walk. Jane took a deep breath and followed her older sister. They went to the secretary to have more information. A random teen showed them quickly the place before explaining them how their schedules were working. The bell rang and the two girls separated to join their lockers. Jane was now alone, facing the piece of furniture in metal. She looked at her padlock, tried to open it, but failed. She sighed loudly with her mouth before trying again without succeeding.

- "You need a hand?"

Jane turned her head on her left and saw a redhead with freckles on her cheeks, a boy style, and a skateboard under her arm. Jane just frowned.

- "Show me. (takes the paper to look at the number and opened the locker) Here, it's hard at the beginning, but then...well...it's easier. I'm Max, by the way," smiled the redhead. "What about you?"

- "Jane."

- "You're shy, that's cute. Well, if you need anything, you know you can ask me, ok?"

Jane gulped with difficulties before nodding.

- "If you don't want to eat alone at lunch, me and my friends would be happy to have you with us, but you don't have to, you look more like the cool kids, and, well, we're not the cool kids...Anyway, welcome in hell!"

Max smiled widely to her before giving a friendly tap on Jane's shoulder and walking away. Jane felt uncomfortable, she didn't like being here; even if this girl seemed nice, the others were looking at her like if she was a monster. She took her books before slamming her locker and going away.

Constance was at her locker, taking her books, not really caring of the people around, until she noticed that the girl on her left was looking with insistence to her.

- "You know, if you want my number, you just need to ask!" joked Constance with a serious tone.

- "Oh, uh, sorry, it's just, I've never seen you around here."

- "I'm new, that's why."

- "You're always this warm with people?" mocked the blonde teen.

- "You're always this curious with people?"

- "Only with the weird ones."

Constance had an amused sigh before closing her locker and taking support on it to look at the other girl.

- "I'm Robin."

- "Constance."

- "Well, welcome! You'll see, this high school is not very different of the others, there are the cool guys, the nerds, the invisible, the bullies, the bullied, and more."

- "Ok, sounds cool. What's your category?"

- "Um...Well, I like thinking I'm a cool guy," smirked Robin.

- "Nerd and invisible."

- "Hey! Fuck you!" chuckled the blonde teen. "I'm not a nerd, not as much as those ones (shows a group of teens with her chin) but, um, yeah, I'm invisible."

- "It's ok, I don't care!"

- "God, I'm relieved, I was so scared of your opinion!" she joked.

- "Pff, you already like me," smiled Constance.

- "Well, you seem nice."

- "I am!"

Robin chuckled which made smile Constance. The two girls went in class together, continuing their conversation. On their way, a blonde teen boy with a mullet hit their shoulders on purpose.

- "What's your goddamn problem!?" replied Constance.

- "No, not him," sighed Robin.

- "I'm sorry, are you talking to me!?"

- "Yeah, asshole! You can't watch where you're going!?"

The blonde boy had a weird small laugh before slowly approaching Constance, trying to impress her. The blonde girl didn't fade, she saw worse.

- "Look, you seem new here, I give you that, but, if I hear you again talking to me like that, hide, is it clear!?"

- "I'm not scared of you, if it's your fucking goal!"

The blonde boy tried to push her, but Constance grabbed his wrist and twisted it, forcing him to kneel on the ground.

- "Don't play this with me, is it clear!?" told firmly Constance.

- "Constance, let him go," whispered Robin.

The blonde girl looked around and noticed that everyone was looking at her with shocked eyes. She didn't want to have all the attention, so she let go the asshole who didn't ask for more.

- "Who was this asshole!?"

- "Billy, the worst of all, don't fight against him, he is crazy, and I'm not joking," explained Robin.

- "Well, I can be crazy too."

- "I saw! But he won't stop here, be careful."

- "Don't worry for me."

The two girls kept walking, going to their first class together.

Jane got lost in all those wide halls and arrived late at her first class. When she entered, she wanted to go directly to a seat, but the teacher stopped her on her way.

- "Why don't you tell us a bit more about you?" smiled the man. "What's your name?"

- "Uh, Jane."

- "Ok, welcome Jane. Where do you come from?"

The brown head frowned before showing the door at her left. The class burst in laugh, while Jane felt more uncomfortable. The man didn't insist and showed her her seat. Jane sat at the last row, next to the window. She could see her dog like that. He seemed bored, just like her.

Max was at the last row too, but at the opposite, surrounded by her friends: Will, Mike, Lucas, and Dustin. She chuckled too, thinking that Jane was funny. She looked so lost and embarrassed, she hoped no one would bother her.

Jane spent the first half of her class looking outside, wanting to go with her dog.

- "Jane? Jane!"

The brown head had a startle and realized everyone was looking at her.

- "Uuuh, yeah?"

- "Can you tell me the dates of the World War II?" asked the teacher.

- "Um...twelveth?"

- "What? What does that mean?"

- "I, I don't know..."

- "You don't know the dates of World War II?"

Jane shook her head to say no.

- "Pfff, she is so stupid," mocked Alban which made laugh his friends.

- "Shut up, you can't even count correctly!" intervened Max.

- "Hey! It's not true! I was sick this day!"

- "Even sick you should be able to do 67 plus 86! It's not complicated!"

- "Enough!" intervened the teacher. "Miss Brown, instead of daydreaming, you should focus on the class, but if my class is not interesting enough for you, just leave."

Jane nodded. She took her stuff and put them in her bag before standing.

- "What are you doing!?" got irritated the teacher.

- "Um...I go, you told me I-"

- "I wasn't serious! If you left this class, it's to go to the principal! And he won't give you some cookies! Now sit!"

Jane hesitated but sat again. The teacher continued his class, keeping an eye on her. Jane decided to draw instead, like that, she wasn't looking outside.

The four boys frowned at each other before turning to Max.

- "She is new, she is certainly stressed," murmured the redhead.

- "Yeah but, World War II? Even stressed you know the dates," stated Mike.

- "She is shy, she barely talked to me this morning, she just told me her name, nothing more. Don't be mean with her or I'll kick your ass."

- "We weren't going to bother her; we just think it's weird."

- "She seems funny," said Dustin.

- "Yeah, I agree," smiled Lucas.

- "She could eat with us at lunch, no?" told Will.

- "I already told her she could, but I don't think she will," pouted Max.

- "Too bad. Maybe we should talk to her after class, to show her how nice we are?" said Lucas.

- "Yeah, sounds good."

- "Do you want to go to the principal too!?" cut the teacher.

The four boys turned around before shaking their heads to say no. Max held back a laugh, hiding her smile behind her hand.

The bell rang. The group of friends didn't manage to talk to Jane, as the girl quickly left the room. She went directly to her sister and noticed she was talking with a blonde teen, so she slowly approached them.

- "You dance? That's so cool!" smiled Robin.

- "Yeah, kinda, I don't know if I'm good, but I'm not that bad, I guess."

- "Other talents?"

- "I play guitar and sing, but my sister draws, she is very good."

- "Oh, you have a sister!"

- "Yeah, she is so annoying I can't believe it!"

- "Hey!" grumbled Jane.

- "Oh, you were here!" stated Constance with a fake surprised tone.

- "Haha, you're so funny."

- "Yeah, I know. Well, Robin, this is my little sister, Jane, and Jane, this is Robin."

- "Nice to meet you," smiled Robin.

Jane had a weak smile and nodded.

- "Did you make some friends?"

- "No, I don't like being here."

- "I know, but-"

- "It's necessary, I know...A girl talked to me before my class."

- "Oh, that's nice, she is nice?"

- "I guess," shrugged Jane. "Can I eat with you?"

- "Of course. You eat with us Robin?"

- "Um, yeah, if it doesn't bother you!"

- "Absolutely not, let's go!"

The three girls walked away, going in the cafeteria. Robin explained them how it worked before all sitting at a table. Max was with her friends, looking at Jane.

- "I told you she wouldn't eat with us," stated the redhead.

- "Yeah but, why is she eating with two teens?" frowned Will.

- "Maybe she knows them."

- "Wait, the one with the cap, it's her who kicked your stepbrother's ass!" said Dustin.

- "What!? What happened!?" asked Max.

- "She twisted his wrist! It was so cool!"

- "No way! Why I'm never here when something cool happen!? Damn, I wish I saw that!"

- "I filmed it!"

Dustin took off his phone from his pocket and showed them the video. Max laughed and watched many times the video, not believing it.

- "I love it! Send it to me, I wanna watch it every day!"

The bell rang and all the teens joined their class. Jane spent the day drawing or looking outside, waiting for the end to come. She didn't know why they had to go to school; they never needed it before, and they were living good. But Constance decided otherwise, and now, she was stuck there, watching the seconds passing slowly, the birds flying, the dogs walking...and the teachers speaking again and again, tirelessly, and without stopping. She didn't remember when the last time she got so much bored in so little time was!

The class was finally over, freeing the young girl of this long day. She arrived on the parking lot, waiting for her sister to come, when she saw the redhead who talked to her this morning, Max.

- "Move your ass little shitbird!" yelled Billy.

- "I'm right here! No need to yell!" replied the redhead.

The blonde was already angry because of Constance and couldn't stand more. He quickly walked to her and firmly grabbed her wrist before blocking her against his blue car.

- "Don't fucking talk to me like that, is it clear!? I'm not your friend, you're just a little shit, you have no right t-"

- "Hey!" intervened Jane. "Leave her alone!"

- "Hahaha! Who the fuck is that!? Is it your new girlfriend!?" mocked Billy.

He let go his stepsister before approaching Jane who wasn't stepping back.

- "Billy, stop! She doesn't know you!" told quickly Max

- "Now she will."

Billy pushed brutally Max before grabbing Jane by her jacket, raising her, and blocking her against his car. He raised his fist in the air, Jane putting her hands in front of her face to protect herself, but someone grabbed his wrist. He turned his head and saw a fist before falling on the ground, dropping Jane.

The blonde boy touched his nose and saw a red liquid on his hand. When he looked up, he recognized the blonde teen who twisted his wrist. He saw red. He quickly stood and threw his fist to her, but Constance stepped aside, forcing Billy to hit his own car and breaking his window, covering Jane with pieces of glass. Constance kicked the back of his knee, forcing him to kneel again, and wrapped her arm under his right shoulder and around his neck, blocking him, before leaning to his ear to tell him:

- "If you think you've a chance against me, let me tell you one thing. Good luck, asshole! And now leave!"

She threw him on the floor. Billy quickly stood, trying to find some balance.

- "COME ON, MAX!"

- "NO!" intervened Constance. "You go alone, I saw you driving, if you have to kill someone on the road just kill yourself! Not your sister!"

- "STEPSISTER!"

- "I DON'T CARE!"

Billy entered angrily in his car before slamming his door and hitting the accelerator, making squeal his tires on the tarmac. Constance watched him leaving before crouching next to her sister, grabbing her jacket, and forcing her to stand.

- "Did he hurt you?" asked the blonde teen.

- "No, you arrived in time," answered Jane, taking off the pieces of glass with quick movements with her hands.

- "You have small cuts. Why did you do that!?"

- "He was mean to her, I wanted to do like you..."

- "But, Jane, you don't know how to fight!"

- "I know..."

- "It's ok. We should go."

Jane took her bag and followed her sister before bumping into her, not noticing she stopped.

- "He is always like that?" asked Constance.

- "No, he was in a good day today," answered Max.

- "(nods) You have a way to go back home?"

- "I've my skateboard, thanks for...defending me."

Constance nodded and walked away. Jane shyly waved to Max before trotting around to catch her sister up. Max had an amused smile before jumping on her skateboard and rolling to home. She was glad someone defended her, no one dared to face Billy before, maybe he would stop being annoying, or he would be worse, she didn't know. But Jane seemed really nice, she would try to talk to her the next day.
