Chapter 30 : Plaster cast

Two days later, Max came back in school. She didn't complain of these two days, it was like a break. When she arrived at her locker, Jane was waiting for her. The young brunette was feeling so relieved to see her that she took her in her arms.

- "I'm sorry..."

- "Jane, this is not your fault," chuckled Max. "It's just a broken arm don't worry, really."

- "I'm glad you had your helmet."

- "Yeah, my super strong helmet full of rainbows."

- "Yeah," smiled Jane.

- "You're reassured?"

- "I think."

- "Cool. You wanna draw on my plaster cast?"

- "Yes!"

Jane broke the hug with a big smile. They went to their class, like that, Max could put her broken arm on a small pillow while Jane was drawing on it and placing stickers on it. The four boys arrived and decided to sign it too.

- "Thanks God you don't have lots of friends, like that Jane can draw everywhere!" joked Mike.

- "Don't be jealous because your dog looks ridiculous next to her cute cat," told Max.

- "...It's a crocodile..."

Max, Lucas, Dustin, and Will looked at each other before bursting in laugh.

- "You're all mean, I hate you all," said Mike with a smile. "Jane, at least, doesn't mock my lack of talent!"

- "She didn't hear you, she is too focused on her drawing to hear your stupidities," stated Lucas.

- "Jane, let me some space, I wanna draw too!" lightly grumbled Will.

- "You've space here!"

- "Not enough! Move!"

- "Just draw something small! She is my best friend, I wanna draw everywhere for her!"

- "She is my best friend too, let me draw, her wall is already full of your drawings!"

- "Just draw more for her, you'll see some of your drawings on her wall too!"

Will stood and purposely pushed Jane with his shoulder to stop her from drawing. Jane looked at him with upset eyes before drawing a heart on his cheek.

- "No, Jane! You're annoying!"

- "Don't push me then!"

- "Ok, guys, you're really cute but there is enough space for both of you, just share," intervened Max with an amused tone.

- "Fine!" sighed Jane.

The two friends began to draw again on Max' arm, wanting to do the best drawing for the redhead.

- "Jane, are you going back to your welcome center?" asked Dustin.

- "Oh, uh, yeah, next week I guess," answered Jane.

- "You're not sad?"

- "Well, I knew we would go back there, so, of course I'm a bit sad, but Will's house is not our home, and the welcome center is not that bad, at least we have a roof above our heads and food and a bed, so it's fine, even if I'm gonna miss Will's house."

- "You're welcomed when you want, and none of us kick you out, if you wanna stay, you know you can," smiled the young boy.

- "If it was just me, I would stay, believe me, but Constance don't like owing people things like that, we've been just us since years now, we're used to it."

- "You don't owe us anything, none of you. Everybody needs help at a moment of their life, there is no shame to it."

- "Well, I guess my sister is too pride for this," lightly chuckled Jane. "Don't worry, it's not like if we're going back in the street, we've a place to go."

- "You slept often outside?" frowned Lucas.

- "Sometimes it happened."

- "For how long?"

- "I, I don't remember..."

- "Leave her alone, you don't see she doesn't wanna talk about it!?" intervened Max.

- "Yeah, sorry," pouted Lucas.

- "It's fine, you're curious, that's all, I understand," reassured Jane.

The teacher entered, forcing the kids to sit on their chairs, but Jane didn't stop her drawing, wanting to finish it.

Meanwhile, Constance was in class with Robin, trying to understand the exercises they had to do. But Robin was more focus on her partner than her exercises. She was wondering how she could broach the subject without sounding too crazy. First, she had to know if she had a chance, because if Constance was straight, it was a waste of time.

- "Did you ever go to a date?" asked Robin, already regretting her question.

- "Uh...Are you asking me out?" frowned Constance.

- "What!? No! No, I mean, well, no, I was just...wondering..."

- "Oooook, that was unexpected!"

- "Sorry, it came out like that!"

- "It's ok," chuckled Constance. "And no, I've never been on a date before. What about you?"

- "Oh, uh, no, not really, you know, I'm invisible so..."

- "Yeah, true! But I'm sure some are impressed by you and don't dare to ask you out!"

- "I don't think so," lightly laughed Robin.

- "Why not!"

- "You were not impressed by me the first day, why the others?"

- "I wasn't impressed by Billy the first day either, I mean, I'm hard to impress. But it doesn't mean no one else is impressed, I'm not really a model for social interactions."

- "Yeah, I can't disagree with that."

Constance chuckled before lightly nudging Robin.

- "So?" asked Constance.

- "So what?"

- "When do you wanna go on a date?"

- "(blushes hard) Oh, uh, wh-, um...With you?"

- "Who else?"

- "Oh, I wasn't expecting this, I'm not ready!"

- "It's ok, relax, you don't even have to say yes!"

- "No, I mean, yes! It's a yes, I was just not ready to have an...ask? From you, like that...I'm not clear..."

- "Ok," chuckled Constance. "Tomorrow night?"

- "Sure! No problem!" answered Robin, trying to calm down.

- "What kind of date do you want? I'm not an expert with that, I mean, I don't really have references for this, Jane is my only family and I didn't really have time to make friends so...I don't know what I'm supposed to do."

- "Nothing complicated, we can go see a movie and eat at the restaurant, what do you think?"

- "Sounds great, cool."

The two girls smiled to each other before going back to their work. Constance was stressing so much, she didn't know how she was supposed to act, it was the first time for her! But the fact it was the first time for Robin reassured her, they would be two awkward girls trying to have a date, it could be fun.
