Chapter 5 : Candies

The two girls spent months in the street with Constance playing guitar, singing, or dancing to beg for money or food. Jane noticed that people didn't have much to give them, certainly having problems with money too. The brown head was wandering near the dumpsters, looking for some useful things. She heard some noises in one of them and decided to check inside. What she found was better than she thought. She took it and ran to her sister to show her.

- "A dog!" told happily Jane.

- "I see," answered Constance.

- "It's my dog, now."

- "What!? We can't keep a dog!"

- "Why?" asked the brown head with a sad voice.

- "Because...we can't feed him."

- "I can feed him; we will find foods for him. Pleeeeeeease!"

- "(sighs with her mouth) Ok!"

- "Whou! Thanks!"

Jane hugged the small dog while Constance petted his head. The blonde girl went back to dance while Jane began to play with her new friend: Dog.

- "Come on Dog, grab the ball. No, not my fingers, the ball! (sighs with her mouth) Ok, you wanna play with my fingers."

The young girl moved her fingers above him to make him jump. While she was having fun with her dog, a woman slowly approached her.

- "Are you alone?" asked the woman with a soft tone.

- "My sister is dancing, there," answered Jane, pointing Constance with her finger.

- "Do you need help or something?"

- "I don't think, we're together, it's cool."

The woman looked at Jane with sad eyes, feeling hurt to not be able to help her.

- "Here, this is for you."

- "A teddy bear! (takes it) Thank you!"

- "It's nothing, really."

The woman smiled to Jane before going away. Constance reappeared and frowned at her sister.

- "You found a teddy bear?"

- "A nice woman gived it to me," explained Jane, hugging tight her cuddly toy. "No, Dog! This is not for you, it's mine!"

Constance sat on the ground, counting what she gained, while Jane was throwing the ball she found to her dog.

- "Like that, tiny Paddington have a friend," smiled Constance.

- "Yes, Mr. Bear!"

- "Yeah."

Ten dollars and fifty cents. She could buy some food for her sister; it was better than nothing. They entered in a shop and looked for something not too expensive. But everything was expensive! Except candies, which Jane noticed, begging with her eyes for those sweets. Constance hesitated. No one was looking at them, she couldn't see cameras, maybe no one would notice that those two sandwiches would miss. She slid them under her coat and took a bag of candies for her sister before walking out of the shop like if everything was normal. The man didn't stop her; she was lucky. They took a bus to go as far as possible from the shop she just stole. She hated having to do it, but she had no choice, she didn't like seeing her sister eating in the bins. She didn't want her to have a life like that. But she didn't have the choice.
