Chapter 27 : Stickers

Jane was going to spend her afternoon at Max'. Neil and Billy weren't there, only Max' mother would be home, which was not a problem for the young brunette. She couldn't wait, her best friend told her she had a surprise for her, she was so curious to know what it was! She arrived at her house, saluted Susan before going directly to her best friend's bedroom.

- "Jane!"

- "Max!"

The redhead jumped from her bed and took her friend in her arms before raising her.

- "I'm so happy to see you," said Max, her face against Jane's shoulder.

- "I'm happy to see you too!" smiled Jane.

Max put her friend on the floor before inviting her to sit on her bed. While the redhead was looking for something in her stuff, Jane noticed the paper fortune teller she made for her on her nightstand and was happy that Max kept it.

- "As we didn't find a helmet with rainbows and all, I thought that we could decorate it!" said happily Max.

The redhead put her black helmet on her bed with lots of different stickers.

- "Oh! I love it! I love all of them! Your helmet is gonna be so cool!"

- "I know! And, if there are stickers you like, you can keep them."

- "Really? Like...this one?"

- "Of course! It's like my Christmas present for you," smiled Max.

- "Oh...uh, I didn't buy you anything..."

- "Yes, you did! Even if you gave it before Christmas, it's still a present, (takes her rabbit-shaped cuddly toy) and I love it!"

- "I'm glad you keep it," softly said Jane.

- "He keeps me safe, I've no reason not to keep him."

- "He have a name?"

- "Super-bunny."

- "That's cool, like a superhero."

- "It's because he is a superhero, but only the night, it's a secret."

- "I won't tell anyone."

The two girls chuckled. Max gave a rainbow-shaped sticker to Jane who placed it on the helmet.

- "Where did you find all these stickers?"

- "Oh, well, we went shopping with my "beautiful family", and we made a shop with lots of stickers like these, I immediately thought of you. It was the same day when you gave me Super-bunny, you remember?"

- "Oh yeah, I remember, I gave you this (shows the paper fortune teller) too."

- "I love it, I read one thing every night before falling asleep."

- "Cool, I know I'm not as good as you to write things, but I hope you like them..."

- "I do, I love them, yesterday you told me you wished I was your sister."

- "Yeah, I wish you was, like that, you would have been loved by Constance and me like you deserve."

Max didn't know what to answer. Jane's words touched her so much that she found nothing to say. Instead, she had a big smile on her face and blushing cheeks. The redhead placed a rainbow sticker on Jane's cheek, making laugh her friend. Once the helmet finished, the girls decided to watch a movie on Max' computer, while eating cookies laid down on her bed.

Constance arrived at the end of the afternoon. When she knocked, Susan opened her the door and invited her to enter.

- "Jane! Your sister is here!" told the mother.

- "I'm coming!" answered the young girl from Max' room.

- "I hope she didn't bother you," said Constance with a light joking tone.

- "Oh no, not at all, Jane is a very nice girl, and Max is always very happy to have her with her, it's a real pleasure," smiled Susan.

Constance nodded. She took opportunity of this wait to look around. There were pieces of glass behind the couch, a stain on it, a broken vase, a big TV (certainly only for the men), empty beers, cigarette butts, and magazines about cars, economy, and sport. A bit cliché, but not surprising. She continued near the two teens' rooms. Both had locks out of their rooms, it was weird. It explained a lot of the house ambience. She slowly opened Billy's room without entering it. The bin next to the door was enough. Too many used condoms inside. She closed the door, hoping he didn't do those kinds of things while Max was next door, knowing he certainly did. This girl certainly knew more about life than she should.

- "Hey sis'," smiled Jane.

- "Hey you, you have a cute rainbow on your cheek!"

- "I know, Max bought stickers, look!"

- "Whoa, that's a lot of stickers!"

- "Yeah, I'm gonna decorate your bag with them!"

- "Can't wait!"

- "We ate cookies and watched a movie!"

- "Yeah, I see, you have a bit chocolate around your mouth."

Jane used her sleeve to clean her lips. They said goodbye to Max and Susan before leaving the house. Constance didn't know if she could do something for her, her mother seemed under influence of her husband, in denial of the situation. It would be complicated, but she would try.
