Chapter 28 : Guitars

Joyce decided to go shopping with her small tribe. As it was in town, Joyce preferred taking the subway not to have problem to park her car. Jane was overexcited, as usual, overexciting Will too. They arrived in the entrance of the subway, where Joyce was taking tickets, but noticed that Jane and Constance were already on the other side of the gate.

- "Girls!? What are you doing!?" asked Joyce.

- "We're taking the subway, why?" frowned Jane.

- "You have a ticket?"

- "Uh..."

- "Come back here, both of you!"

The two girls sighed with their mouths before coming back near the three others.

- "I don't want you to cheat, if you need tickets, you ask me, ok?"

- "We always did like that!" said Constance with an annoyed tone.

- "Because you didn't have the choice, but now you have. Here are your tickets, don't lose them."

Jane grabbed it like if it was the most precious thing in the world, closing tight her hand around it. The two girls looked at the others using their tickets, trying to understand how it worked. They looked at each other with a frown. Jonathan and Will showed them. Will took Jane's wrist and drove it to the machine, put the ticket in the machine, gently pushed Jane to make her do one step, and took her ticket to give it to her. Jane walked through the turnstile and showed proudly her ticket to Joyce who warmly smiled to her.

After a few minutes in the subway, they finally arrived. Jane began to jump and run everywhere with Will, still staying close to the others. The young girl saw a shop with lots of stickers inside and was sure it was the one where Max bought hers.

- "Can we go there?" asked Jane with a small voice.

- "Stop demanding, Jane," told Constance.

- "No, it's ok, don't worry, we're here for this, and I would love to discover this shop," smiled Joyce.

- "Maybe we could go in another shop, while you're in this one?" proposed Jonathan.

- "Sure, where?"

- "There is a music shop right there, I thought we could find some interesting things."

- "Sure, have fun. We'll join you if we finish before."

- "Ok, cool."

Constance and Jonathan went in the music shop while Joyce, Jane, and Will went in the shop full of stickers. She wanted all of them, to decorate everything! There was everything she liked: unicorns, rainbows, candies, cute animals, and more.

Constance and Jonathan were wandering through the different sections, watching the latest hits and some instruments. Constance looked at the guitars, wishing she could buy one. She still had her father's, but she wanted an electric one now, to play Metal or Hard Rock songs. They kept walking, but Constance bumped into someone as she was too mesmerized by the instruments.

- "You can't watch where you're going fucking dyke!?"

Constance turned around and recognized Neil. She thought it wasn't the moment to create a drama, so she stayed calm.

- "I'm sorry, I didn't wanna hurt you," said Constance, holding her ironical tone back.

- "I know you did it on purpose, I'm your target since last time!"

- "I was watching guitars; I didn't even notice you were there before I bumped into you! It wasn't planned, stop being paranoid!"

- "Paranoid!?"

The man grabbed Constance's wrist and blocked her against a shelf. Jonathan pushed him, freeing his friend.

- "Don't touch her, asshole!"

Neil didn't appreciate to be pushed like that. He punched the boy in his nose, dazing him. He, then, attacked Constance. The girl managed to avoid most of his punches, but she was the one who gave the last one. Neil was knocked out on the ground, while Jonathan's nose was bleeding and Constance's hands were burning. Joyce arrived in running in the shop, followed by Jane and Will.

- "Oh my god, are you ok!? What happened!?" asked the mother.

- "This asshole punched us!" explained Jonathan, pressing his nose.

- "Why!? What did you do!? You provoked him!?"

- "What!? No!" replied Constance.

- "She bumped into him, but by accident! She even apologized but he became crazy!" intervened the teen boy.

- "Oh my god, show me your hands! Are you ok!?"

- "Yeah, I'm fine!"

The security guards arrived and took Jonathan and Constance apart, while Neil was slowly coming back. They sent them at hospital to check them. Once checked, Jonathan and Constance were sent at the police station to explain the chief what happened.

- "Are you gonna check his house?" asked Constance, after the deposition.

- "His house? Why?" frowned Hopper.

- "I don't know, to see how his kids live!"

- "I can't do that with no proofs."

- "Even if I claimed I saw locks at their doors?"

- "Many people have locks at their doors."

- "Yeah, but not outside their bedrooms."

- "...They have locks outside their bedrooms?" frowned the chief.

- "Yep."

- "Even if it's true-"

- "It's true!"

- "It's still not enough."

- "What do you need then!?"

- "Things like complaints or weirds situations!"

- "Billy's behavior is not enough!? And Max' bruises are bullshit!? What are you waiting for to help them!"

- "Constance, just because you and your sister cooperated years ago doesn't mean they will. I'll keep an eye on them, I promise."

Constance clenched her jaw of frustration. She knew he couldn't do more, but it wasn't enough. She wished she could do something by her own, but what? She had some ideas, but it could just make things worse for them, and it wasn't what she wanted.

The chief released them. Jonathan and Constance joined Joyce who was upset by their behavior.

- "He attacked first!" told Jonathan to defend himself.

- "I know, but it doesn't mean you can fight like that, especially you (points Constance) you have enough problems like that at school, I would like you to calm down before it brings you to jail, am I clear!?"

- "If someone attacks me, I'll defend myself! I won't let them beat my ass because it could make you mad!" replied Constance. "You're not my mom, you can't talk to me like that!"

The blonde teen didn't wait for her to answer and went directly in the car where Will and Jane were waiting. The brunette held out a paper that she gave to her sister.

- "It's a drawing with stickers," explained proudly Jane.

- "Thank you, it's beautiful," answered softly Constance.

The blonde teen put her arms around her sister's shoulders and kissed the top of her head. Maybe she should stop thinking she could do something in this story, she should focus on Jane before this woman stole her from her.
