Mel is a hyena-aardwolf hybrid and a former resident of the Badlands. He has black and gray fur, light brown eyes, paws, and on the tip of his tail, and black stripes.

Mel is a friendly guy who often thinks highly of himself and is very prideful of his friends. Unfortunately, he is unlucky in love due to being no others of his kind in the Badlands and his frightening appearance. Like the rest of his friends, Mel grew up in the Badlands but the whereabouts of his family are unknown. He loves grooming himself and hanging from his tail. He can also be very gluttonous especially when it comes to food. 

He first appears playing catch with his friends. When Kiwi expresses concern about a mysterious scent, Mel pays her no mind. He becomes curious about the newcomers in their territory and takes a great disliking to them due to the group coming from Hero Valley. At the end of his debut episode, Mel admits he had his doubts but was glad he had the newcomers as friends. He soon becomes the bravest member of the Tangles.
