Chapter 17

Kylo walked out of his ship with his lightsaber ready, all around him Storm Troopers were firing at the surprised Resistance fighters while TIE Fighters rained down shots from above, damaging ships before they could take off. But his eyes were drawn to the figure at the edge of the base... holding a limp figure in their arms. He started walking towards them, slicing his lightsaber through any rebel in his way and blocking blaster bolts fired at him. His brother didn't fail to notice his advance either and Kylo scowled under his mask in hatred as Alder put the limp figure on the ground and took out his lightsaber, activating the purple blade.

"You will die today, brother." Kylo snarled, the sound sounding even more inhuman through his mask.

"I did what I had to." Alder blocked the first attack before advancing in a quick session of blows.

He retreated a few steps before intercepting a strike at his neck and kicking his brother to the ground. The sound of a blaster being fired from behind him caused Kylo to quickly turn and deflect the blast before lowering his blade slightly upon seeing Leia Organa, his mother, standing there with the weapon in her hand. The look of agony on her face was evident and made him laugh.

"Emotions, sentiment, make you weak." He sneered at her, walking towards her like a cat would a mouse.

Alder could be heard preparing to strike him down from behind and quickly held up a hand, freezing his brother in his tracks. Kylo smirked and put his lightsaber away to take off his mask.

"The last thing you will see is the one you love killing you." He told his mother as he walked forward again.

"Ben..." His mother's voice was slightly pleading. "This isn't you. You are good; I can feel it inside you, Ben. Come home."

The pull to the light was growing in strength and irritation inside him as he stood a foot away from her, the blaster no longer aimed at him. Kylo stared at her as she held it out to him before taking the weapon in his hands and pondering it, finally tossing it to the side. Hope emanated from his mother at the sight and he casually took out his lightsaber.

"Ben Solo is dead." Kylo activated the blade and allowed the blade to rip through her chest.

"Mom, no!" Alder's wail came from behind them as he summoned his helmet back to his hands and placed it back on his head. "Monster!"

"No more so than you." He snapped back. "We have both killed family, do not call one a monster without looking at what you've done."

"I don't kill innocents when I'm in my right mind. Poison clouded my judgment, don't compare what I did to this!" Alder fumed, struggling against Kylo's hold on him.

He let his brother go and glanced back as Alder staggered and fell to his knees at his mother's side. Another cry of anger and pain rose from the Jedi's throat, which he ignored as he crouched down beside Skurn's form. Blood covered her and one of her closed eyes was obviously damaged. Kylo took the muzzle off her mouth and felt warmth soak his clothes as he head rolled to the side with blood running from it, anger threatened to overwhelm his rational thoughts as he watched the crimson fall to the ground and pool.

"This isn't where you die." He hissed. "Not now, not at this fight, so get up!"

"What happened to sentiment being weak?" Alder's voice rose from behind him laced with venom. "What happened to emotions getting you killed?"

"This is not sentiment." Kylo stood up and turned to face his brother. "It is getting back an ally."

"Liar." Alder's eyes were dark with blood thirst and stalked towards him with both his red and purple lightsabers in hand. "You don't think I can't sense it? Your feelings betray you brother."

Kylo activated his lightsaber, the blade crackling in his hand with barely stable energy. From the corner of his eye he could see Rey and Finn running in their direction but ignored them for the moment as he dealt with his brother. Their blades clashed and whirled through the air as they focused on each other and blocked out the rest of the battle around them. Blasters and screams of pain became background noise to the broken humming made as their lightsabers met again and again. Neither of them gained the upper hand, slightly to Kylo's surprise. He had forgotten Alder's ability to fight with a lightsaber considering his powers with the Force had been so weak and this seemed to be the first time in a long time he was able to fight his brother without Alder being injured... He was about to change that fact.

Alder blocked his stroke by crossing his blades in an x; a hateful yet pleased expression on his face. "Something wrong brother? Are you scared that you won't be able to beat me? I feel your fear."

Had he gone mad? Kylo didn't fear him or any other Jedi in this battle. With a new plan in mind, he stopped pushing back against the lightsabers and ducked out of the way, tripping Alder as he stumbled by before slashing his lightsaber across his brother's back. Alder gave a shout of pain but managed to stay on his feet before spinning around and throwing his lightsaber. He knocked the red blade aside before feeling a jolt go through his body as Alder shot lightning from his hands, with a grimace, he fell to his knees before managing to deflect the electricity with his blade. The attack didn't last much longer after that as Alder dropped his hand and started panting, though the fight wasn't over yet considering the scavenger and traitor had shown up.

"Have you come to die with your friend and your leader?" He questioned darkly as he got back to his feet, using the Force to shove Alder away so his brother collapsed beside Leia's body.

"You can't win this fight." Finn spoke confidently. "We've already beaten you before."

Kylo didn't respond as he grabbed Skurn's lightsaber from his belt and put his own away. The double blade would help him more than his in this fight despite the lack of training with this style. They circled each other before Rey made the first move, going in for his torso while Finn followed with a blow towards his back. Kylo kicked Rey back as he arced the dark saber to push her blade away before spinning and using the other end to knock the traitor's blade towards his partner. He was about to go in for an attack of his own when a falling TIE Fighter made the three of them scatter from the falling ship, which then proceeded to explode upon impact and knocked all of them to the ground.

Being the first to get back up, he went back over to Skurn's side and was relieved to see her breathing, though her wounds were no less concerning. Kylo lifted her up before turning to a squadron of Storm Troopers finishing off a collection of Resistance soldiers. "Keep the Jedi busy."

"They won't get past us Lord Ren." One replied with a nod.

The Storm Troopers wouldn't hold the three back forever but Kylo didn't say that as he disappeared through the fighting and back towards his ship, which was then shot and destroyed by a low flying X-Wing. He glared in fury as he saw Poe Dameron flying the accused ship before changing course and getting in a not so badly damaged TIE Fighter, though he could tell the controls were slightly destroyed... it wouldn't last too long after a jump to light speed. Good thing General Hux had kept the Star Destroyer at that range, he was sure it would at least make it back.

It was a bit hard to fit the two of them in the small ship, which was only built to fit a flyer considering this wasn't a Special Forces TIE Fighter, but it would have to work. Kylo quickly got it into the air and started towards the atmosphere of the planet, after shooting and hitting Poe's X-Wing as he spotted it in revenge, before calculating the location and going into light speed. The stars blurred around him for a moment before coming back into focus, though Kylo couldn't see any sign of the Star Destroyer despite the screen telling him this was the right spot in the Ileenium system. He couldn't sense any other ship either, but what worried him most was the silence... the TIE Fighter was now dead and he could feel it falling towards the gravitational pull of the icy white planet below. It had literally stopped in midair like a funny story might have a ship do, and would have amused him a bit, except for the fact that he was the one in the ship and most likely wouldn't survive without a few injuries.

Kylo looked around the ship as the icy ground quickly drew closer, the ship now smoking after passing through the atmosphere, shouldn't there be an ejection button somewhere? He let out a string of curses when he found it sparking and useless. Giving up any hope in using that he shifted a bit to hold onto Skurn before bracing himself as the TIE Fighter finally smashed into the ground. The world was black for a few minutes before he shook himself awake to see the snow and smoke around him, he quickly started getting out considering all the times one of these has crashed before blowing up... and considering the smoke it was giving off he didn't want to be near it if and when that happened. Carrying Skurn in his arms as he fought his way through the deep snow however wasn't much better, he felt frozen in seconds and it didn't look like a civilized planet they were now stranded on.

Behind him the TIE Fighter finally exploded. With a frustrated growl, Kylo kept walking. Snoke hadn't taught him what to do in this situation, but luckily, his Jedi master had before Kylo had left. Considering he doubted there were any civilizations nearby and no way for the First Order to track him down at the moment, he found the largest pile of snow he could and started digging into it. Once it was large enough the two would warm it up with their body heat and, despite still being cold, shouldn't freeze to death. A flashback to a story his father told about saving his uncle by stuffing him in a tun tun, which was some creature the rebels on Hoth had apparently ridden, crossed his mind. Kylo paused in his work to gaze out at the cold, bleak, world... was this Hoth? It at least seemed to be in the Hoth system, which meant it was even more unlikely they would be found soon.

He started digging out the snow again until a short tunnel had been created that then led to a small space the two could fit in. Kylo settled into the slightly cramped space before looking down and beginning an examination of Skurn's injuries. Blood was still welling between his gloves as he pressed down, not failing to miss the squelching sound, on her side. With concern he started setting to work tearing the fabric back more until he could get a better look at the flesh wound and cleaning it with snow, the cold should stop the bleeding of this and any other wounds she had. After those were taken care of, his gaze fell upon her arm, which was wearing a tight black glove that didn't match her other one.

Once he pulled it off however, Kylo felt her other hand grab his wrist as Skurn's gaze flickered to life. She stared at him for a few moments but didn't speak, which he finally took advantage of to question her. "What did they do?"

He could see the metal bone in the torn open flesh of her arm, which he knew was from when she had hit the wall in their fight, but what had the Resistance done to her to make her cringe at his touch?

"T-they wanted information." Her voice was raspy and chopped up. "...I r-refused... I knew you'd come b-back. I couldn't-"

Coughing broke her words and Kylo felt her shiver, he quickly moved her closer to him, though he suspected it wasn't just the cold getting to her. She needed real medical treatment. Anger burned in him as he went into her mind, trying to be careful not to send out more pain through her... what he saw increased his fury. He wished he could take his lightsaber and take out his temper on the snow and ice around them but knew it would only cause more harm to them.

"Kylo..." Skurn's voice was a bit steadier. "Where are we?"

"It doesn't matter." He soothed, trying to keep the irritation of not quite knowing their location himself out of his voice. "I'll get us back to the First Order soon."

Her body was relaxed against his as she took in his words, if she wasn't well enough to try figuring it out... Kylo doubted she would last long in this harsh place. He took off his helmet and stared at the world outside, it was so much whiter without the helmet contaminating and darkening the view. With a sigh he burrowed his head next to hers, he hoped the Force would somehow save them soon, though he doubted it. The only thing the First Order might eventually find, would be their frozen corpses...
