Chapter 15

Rey heard the sound of lightsabers smashing into each other and glanced at Chewie who was walking along beside her. "Come on!"

She started running towards the sound with the Wookie right on her heels. Taking out her own lightsaber she turned the corner and didn't think twice about attacking when she saw the red blade arc down towards Alder's head. Rey shoved into her opponent and used the Force to knock the lightsaber out of their hand before holding her own blue blade under the escaped prisoner's throat.

"Did you really think you would get away?" Rey growled down at the other woman.

Alder came over next to her. "Rey no, she's fine, we were training!"

"With a person who wants us dead?" She glared at him in slight betrayal, didn't he care, what if his trust was misplaced?

"We reached an agreement. She helps me train, and we don't torture her." Alder stated simply.

"I could train with you." She stated the obvious fact.

"The thing is Rey..." He refused to meet her gaze. "I know the Jedi skills, I'm looking beyond that now."

She barely noticed as Skurn moved away from her lightsaber and got back to her feet. The shock of Alder's words hitting her was much worse than any real wound could. "You're learning things from the Dark side? Alder, you know it's forbidden! How could you do this after everything I did to bring you back?"

"I appreciate that but I realized that despite the evil these tactics are used for, they could also be used for good." Alder finally looked back up at her, his gaze daring her to challenge his words. "I hate the Dark side as much as you Rey, but after experiencing life on both sides... I don't find the Jedi's goals to my taste either, nor their rules."

"So you're going to be a rogue?" She asked, worried she was losing him once more.

"Of course not. I'm still with the Resistance right?" He moved closer to her, his hand now resting on her side reassuringly. "And I won't abandon you or the others, I'm not my brother."

"Yeah, sure." Skurn muttered as she leaned against the wall watching them. "That's why you killed your own father."

Chewie gave a growling roar of anger but Rey was relieved the Wookie didn't go for Alder and instead went for the prisoner. She stood back as Chewie locked Skurn in a death grip while giving growled threats the entire time... until Alder pulled him away.

"Chewie stop!" He stood in front of the once bounty hunter. "I know what I did, I know I should have tried fighting the poison harder, but I can't change the past. I'm over it, her words don't affect me, don't let them get to you... It'll encourage her."

Skurn gave a cough. "You tell that shag carpet."

"You aren't helping." Alder snapped at her.

Rey glared at Skurn as the woman regained her breath. "Stop defending someone who doesn't deserve it."

"I need her alive to train me." He repeated his earlier words. "After that, Chewie can do what he wishes."

Chewie made a sound of grudging agreement, though Rey was sure the Wookie would attack Skurn again once Alder wasn't around... and she wasn't going to stop him. Rey wished Skurn had died when she'd fallen off the side of that cliff, perhaps then none of this would be happening. So, she said the last thing she could try in hopes of bringing Alder back to her side.

"Your grandfather wanted to learn the tricks of the Dark side too. It was with good intentions, but the Dark side corrupts and consumes all who use it. Don't fall into that void Alder." She was surprised his uncle hadn't told Alder about his grandfather's past, though maybe Master Skywalker had and Alder had just forgotten.

Alder moved away from the prisoner. "I won't make that mistake. Rey, I'm doing this to put an end to the war. I won't go gallivanting off to the Dark side... Know your enemy, remember?"

"I doubt Master Skywalker had this in mind when he told us that." She replied dryly.

"Well he isn't here now is he? Not exactly the perfect role model either considering when things turned bad he just left us to deal with it ourselves. Why doesn't he come help us fight and win this war?" He made some good points but Rey refused to let him win and instead walked out of the room... she knew who could handle him.

It didn't take long to find General Organa either as she was currently speaking with C-3PO, though they ended their conversation as she gave notice to her presence. "General, could you help me with something for a moment?"

"Of course." She responded and stood up with a smile that hid a hint of the sadness she still held for Han's death, something Rey didn't blame her for. "What is it?"

Rey started walking back the way she'd come. "It's Alder... he's training with Zeh Skurn, the prisoner we captured, to learn about the Dark side. I'm hoping you could help me talk some sense into him before he goes on a path he can't escape from."

A concerned expression crossed Organa's face. "You did a wonderful job of healing him but... perhaps he did not want to be healed."

"You want to lock him back up?" Rey turned to her slightly; General Organa was like her mother, yet once again here the woman was turning against her own biological child.

"Of course not. I want my son to be who he was. I want my children back home together... even if Han can't be around to complete the family again." Her voice turned a bit more commanding. "But as the leader of the Resistance I must protect my people."

"He has made it clear he only wants to use this knowledge to protect us... it's that bounty hunter I don't trust." Rey responded before walking into the training room where Chewie was reluctantly standing off to the side watching Alder and Skurn practice once more.

Alder's mother entered the room just in time to watch Alder get taken out with a brilliant display of lightning he failed to block with the Force. "Enough!"

Everyone in the room froze. Rey tensed as General Organa glared at her son and the prisoner. A glance at Chewie told her that the Wookie was worried about the woman's wrath as well.

"Mom." Alder got to his feet but didn't make a move to walk towards her. "I was just-"

"So I've heard." Organa responded, cutting him off. "I want her back in the cell now and not released again unless it's for execution... Do you understand?"

Alder stiffened before nodding in submission. "Of course."

"Take her there now. Chewie will make sure it happens." She was about to leave before pausing next to Rey and turning back to stare at her son. "I'm putting you in charge of getting the information out of her but I will make sure a guard is there to oversee it."

With that the general was gone once more. Rey could feel Alder's sense of betrayal aimed at her. Why couldn't he see this was for his own good? She didn't look him in the eyes but kept a close eye on him as he took the lightsabers and put them back on his belt before using the Force to summon the cuffs to his hands and cuffing the prisoner. Without another word, he walked past her and back to the holding cell with Chewie close behind. She felt bad for doing it, but the feeling quickly faded. She had prevented deaths from happening, which would happen sooner or later with that evil bounty hunter loose and with a weapon.

Rey started to follow after them, quickly catching up in time to see Alder activate his lightsaber and press the purple blade against Skurn's chest right above her heart. Now unable to scream with her muzzle back on, Rey watched as the prisoner struggled to get away from the burning weapon... she could only imagine the pain but didn't try to stop the session. The bounty hunter deserved it for everything she'd done, though she took notice that Alder's eyes showed that he felt some sympathy for the torment, which became more obvious as he stopped and instead placed a hand on her head... and blasted lightning through his fingertips.

She was startled to say the least. Since when had Alder been able to do that? Rey backed away from the cell door but didn't leave as she continued to watch with glued fascination to the female on the attack's receiving end. It ended almost as soon as it had begun and she saw smoke rising from the unconscious form while Alder himself looked drained and ready to pass out beside the prisoner. However he stood up and walked over to her, his eyes dull.

"Get her a medic to heal the wounds a bit." His voice was tired as well.

Rey was about to make a comment about getting one for him when a guard's voice stopped her. "General Organa said not to waste supplies on the prisoner. No medical treatment."

Anger flickered in Alder's gaze. "What?"

"We can't waste supplies on a prisoner who will be dead once they aren't needed. No medical treatments and minimum food and water."

Rey dragged him away as she saw him reach for his lightsaber. "Don't. You'll be locked up too. You said you didn't want to hurt the Resistance right? Well don't go back on your word now just because of his orders. That prisoner isn't innocent, it isn't your duty to protect someone like her; it's to kill people like her."

Alder sighed and nodded. "I know. But, when I first saw her she wasn't so bad... anti social, sure, but..."

"You want to give her another chance." Rey responded simply. "I get it. I mean Finn was given a second chance when we met him, but don't you think she's probably had enough chances at some points in her life?"

He looked at her and gave a small, and a bit sad, smile. "You're right. I shouldn't have been so irrational about it. Thank you."

"Come on, let's go get you something to eat." She offered, changing the subject. "You look like you could use something to refresh you after all that training. Afterwards we can spar together too if you're up for it."

Alder's grin widened. "Of course I'll be up for it. I am one of the best Jedi around when it comes to lightsaber duels."

"Watch out then because I'm going to steal that title." Rey grinned back slightly, glad that shadow of darkness seemed to be disappearing.
