Chapter 1

"Do you feel it?" Skurn questioned as she walked at Kylo's side. "He's coming today."

Kylo glanced at her through his mask. "We all can feel it, look at them, they are all restless."

"They're always restless, I'm surprised they haven't killed each other by now out of boredom." She retorted. "Honestly, they make us look like angels at times."

"Fallen ones perhaps." He commented dryly. "But no one here is by any means a true angel."

Skurn decided to change the subject. "Has Hux sent any word of how the army is coming?"

"He sent Phasma." He replied. "She claims the Storm Troopers are growing in number quite rapidly. We should be ready for another attack soon."

She fell silent as they continued walking through their dark home, of course light was here and there to guide their way along the path but this far under ground very little light was real. Looking up, she paused to stare up at one of the few openings to the sky above, the stars looked even farther away than usual... How she wished she could leave and travel them again. But her place was here with the Knights of Ren now, not wandering the galaxy in search of employment. Beside her Kylo finally noticed she had stopped and walked back to her, pulling her along behind him.

"We don't want to be late." He chided. "Master Snoke will be displeased already with our failure, he will not take kindly to us being late for his arrival."

"It's been a year, he should get over it." She grumbled.

Kylo scoffed. "Snoke has every right to still be furious with us. He ordered us a simple task: get the map from the Resistance so we could find and kill Skywalker. We failed that task."

"We?" Skurn arched her eyebrow at him from under her helmet. "That was your task. Mine was to be trained by you."

"It is still your task as well." Kylo argued.

"Whatever." Skurn muttered.

"Don't talk to your master like that." His voice growled in a hint of frustration.

It was her turn to scoff at him. "You taught me next to nothing since arriving here other than simple customs."

"Yet you've grown in your power under my guidance." Kylo shot back, stopping and standing in front of her, examining her like one would inspect a weapon for any imperfections. "You will make a fine Knight of Ren one day... once your training is finished."

"And when will that be?" She challenged. "I can already hold my own in a fight against you, my abilities with the Force are controlled now! I can even do that choking trick just like you!"

"Basic." He answered. "You will be ready for your trial when I say you are."

Skurn scowled at his back as he turned away from her. Was he blind to her skills, especially when she'd managed every challenge with ease thanks to Snoke's training in dreams? Or perhaps he was ignoring it? Whatever the case was, Kylo was at least proud of her deep down. He even gave her more free time between sessions now that her training was going so well, though she knew one slip up could mean it all got harder again. When they got to the gathering, most of the other knights were already gathered; their black cloaks making the large room look as if a shadow or void were taking over. Skurn took her place at the edge of the crowd as Kylo made his way to the front, as Master of Ren, he would greet Snoke as soon as their ultimate leader arrived. The others around her cast her glances, no matter how long she was there none of them had forgotten the state at which she'd arrived in, not to mention her background when that had somehow slipped out. A grimace formed on her face, none of them trusted or liked her among their ranks.

A dark ship came into sight like a shadow from the night, the command shuttle landed silently and those few Knights of Ren who could be heard whispering among themselves went quiet as the landing platform descended and a black robed figure stepped out. Skurn watched as Kylo exchanged a few words with his master before stepping back into the edge of the crowd. Now what was going to happen? This didn't seem like anything that would still hold a reason to stay, should they disperse? However, before anyone did anything, Snoke stayed the group with his hand.

"Zeh Skurn, come here." His gaze seemed to bore right into her from the shadows of his hood; she shuddered but did as he commanded.

As she walked through the crowd several of the Dark side users gave their allies, for no one here could be called a friend, witty remarks about how she would be disgraced or killed in front of them. Skurn doubted that was true after all the training Snoke had ordered for her but fear did whisper at the back of her mind... What did the man want? She knelt down respectfully in front of him, feeling Kylo's confusion from where he stood nearby.

"Zeh Skurn, daughter of the Dark side." Snoke's voice echoed off the walls in the deathly silence of those around her. "I have witnessed your training in the ways of the Force and lightsaber. You have grown powerful under my guidance and Kylo Ren's, which brings me to the conclusion that you are ready to join as a full member of the Knights of Ren."

Skurn felt Kylo's shock at the announcement and did her best to stay still and not turn her head to face him, it wasn't like it would help her read his expression anyway with his mask on. Footsteps told her he was walking past her however and she saw him come into view to stand to the side of her and Snoke. The annoyance and mixed emotions he was giving off was even stronger up close but his voice was calm as he spoke.

"Master, she isn't ready to face the trails." Kylo spoke softly to avoid being overheard by those gathered.

Snoke scowled at him. "She is ready when I say she is, you may have trained her but I have as well."

"What does he mean?" Kylo's voice echoed in her mind forcefully.

Skurn didn't answer as Snoke spoke up again. "Master of Ren, do you accept her as a full member of the Knights of Ren?"

Kylo retreated from her mind but she knew his questions weren't over. "Yes."

"Then knight her and bring a new member into our ranks." Snoke ordered.

Skurn flinched mentally as Kylo activated his lightsaber and walked in front of her. The crackling sounds near her ear making her hold her breath as she waited for it to burn her. "Hold still."

Well of course she was going to hold still. After Kylo finished his part of the ceremony Snoke spoke once more. "Rise from the old life and join the ranks of the Knights of Ren as a new person. Zeh Skurn is gone, from now on I deem you Zein Ren. Stand up and accept your new name and full membership as a Knight of Ren."

Did he just give her a new name? Skurn hesitated a split second before standing, she liked her old name: it was who she was. Of course she had to play along now, this was her world now, if she had to live by a new name then so be it. "I accept my name and my new place with honor."

"I expect you to." Snoke responded before dismissing those gathered and leading her and Kylo down a narrow tunnel. "Now, why don't you two explain why you failed to get a map?"

"There was a scavenger who is strong with the Force." Kylo growled, bitter at the fact she has given him a scar.

"The girl was untrained yet she managed to defeat both of you." Snoke hissed in response. "You are lucky to only have received a scar for your failure!"

His cold voice was calm despite the rage that was inside him... it made Skurn shift closer to Kylo. "The woman had help."

"Yes, two elders and one traitorous Storm Trooper who apparently wasn't even in the fight long." He sneered, his frozen gaze boring into her and he looked over his shoulder.

"We will find Skywalker this time and kill him." Kylo assured him gravely. "Nothing will stop us with the army Hux is creating."

"I will make sure you do not fail again." Snoke turned down an even smaller and steeper path that would take them to another landing pad on the side of their mountain base. "Your new apprentice should be here by now."

"Another trainee? I don't have time to train someone new!" Kylo snarled. "I need to finish Skurn's training and touch up on our plans."

"Zein's training is complete." Snoke stopped walking as they reached the landing pad where a ship was waiting. "And as for your plans, you can rest assured that they will not be disturbed. Zein will be this apprentice's master."

"What?" Skurn's eyes widened under her helmet, she was supposed to teach someone? "I-"

"No. I will train them." Kylo argued. "I have more experience than her, it will be faster at least."

"This is a trial she must face considering she does not have time to take the normal trials we go through." Snoke motioned towards the hatch of the ship. "Come here Lucifi, come meet your master."

Skurn watched as a figure appeared out of the ship, wearing a black hooded cloak that fit everyone here, but what bothered her was the way they walked. "Do they have a limp?"

She stared at Kylo with an exasperated expression. He seemed to be just as doubtful. "Snoke?"

"His limp will get better in time." Snoke assured them. "Don't let it fool you into thinking he is any less weak."

Lucifi stopped a few feet from them, a mask covering his face. It was impressive to see he was already in a traditional outfit, though the sun bleached bone coloring on his armor did stand out oddly, but perhaps that was Snoke's doing. Skurn still wasn't sure what was so special about Lucifi to make Snoke bring him here but perhaps the reason would appear when his training started.

"Lucifi, this is your master. You will obey her and learn what she has to teach you." Snoke told the man before looking at Skurn. "Zein Ren, take him to his quarters and get him settled in. I wish to speak with Kylo about his plans."

To put it simply, she was being dismissed. She gave a slight nod before turning away, hearing her apprentice following close behind with less than quiet steps. The first lesson he needed was to learn how to walk silently, limp or no limp. She kept a brisk pace as she went through the twists and turns of the dim tunnels without looking back once to see if he was keeping up, after all, if he got lost it was his own fault... At least he was walking quietly now, though a new problem seemed to be forming as he trailed behind her.

Skurn turned to stare at her out of breath apprentice. "Is there a problem?"

Lucifi froze in his tracks and shook his head before staring over her shoulder.

Skurn rolled her eyes and swiveled back around to see one of the other members passing by and walking into a tunnel to the lower levels. "Yeah, there are others here. Now stop panting and follow me."

Lucifi still didn't speak as she led him into a wide tunnel where most of the rooms were located, though mostly unoccupied by those who lived here. However, those who did use their room were usually very protective of it, she'd even witnessed a fight or two break out over trespassing, but it hadn't resulted in a death... the accused wouldn't be trying to enter that room or any other again though. A smirk appeared on her face as she turned to look at Lucifi. He had no idea what pain he would be going through soon enough.

"Find your own room." She instructed. "Just an empty one it doesn't matter which, and get acquainted with the paths here. I'll be waiting in the training area at dawn, don't be late."

She could sense a flicker of surprise and fear come off him but she simply grinned under her helmet as she walked away, her apprentice would fear more than finding rooms by tomorrow.
