8) Departure...

VALERIE

I was back in the apartment. Nothing was broken, like nothing ever happened at all. Like he was alive and I was still here. I wearily walked into the kitchen, watching him pat the table to sit; warm smile still on his face. Tears pricked my eyes, glancing to see I was still the clothes I was wearing when we went to the black market. Wait..."Kade." I whispered, glancing back at Nolind.

He smiled bigger, making his eyes to squint. "Don't worry, he's watching over you right now."

His voice made me choke up a few breaths, covering my mouth and staring longer at him. "I have to be dreaming." I whispered, slowly dragging my feet closer. "This isn't real."

Nolind chuckled, patting the table a few times again. "Sit, I'll tell you everything you need to know. There's trouble brewing, danger that could hurt everyone."

I swallowed, fighting my tears back as I pulled the chair back; creating a low creak till I sat down without breaking eye contact. I'm scared if I look away, he'll dissapear. He pulled his hand away, joining them and nodded. "Do you remember when you were a little girl, Valerie?"

I swallowed again, nodding stiffly. "How could I forgot?" He smiled, squinty eyed again. "....Was I really just an experiment to you?" I croaked.

His eyes opened, his smile shrinking to a thin one. "Ah, my darling. It was never supposed to be this way."

"But I am." I sucked a breath in, speaking scratchy and quick. Feeling the tears roll down my cheeks. "And now I don't know if what ever attacked me is going to kill me or not in the end. Nobody does."

He frowned now, leaning forward. "What attacked you?"

I sniffled, hesitating to say it. "The black window."

His head jerked back, his hands laid flat on the table now. Concern in those glassy eyes, he glanced down to the table and shook his head. "No..no..no...no one was ever supposed to find her."

"Her? Who?" He shook his head, standing up. I got to my feet, watching him walk away. "Who was she?!"

He stopped his, hearing his heavy sigh even from here. "She was...one of the first experiments at the F.E."

"The first..."

He nodded, turning back to me with a weak smile. "She was the perfect being, Valerie. She could never get sick, never have diseases, never die if anyone ever thought about it." He huffed, glancing to the ceiling. "She was perfect. We had found the cure to immortality."

I fluttered my eyes, trying to understand this. "Till what? Till w-w-what happened?"

"She would react highly to the sunlight. As if in pain." He frowned back at me. "Soon after we took the lights from her room, her heart rate had increased. Everything about her was changing...till..."

"Till what?" I growled.

He looked away. "Till she was what you saw her as."

I snapped my head away, fluttering my eyes and getting flash backs of all the bones I was laying ontop of. "The bones."

"She couldn't die, Valerie."

"No..." I shook my head, "Kade...Kade killed her, I saw it." I snapped back to him, raising my voice. "I watched him! He killed her for me! He used his sin and stabbed her."

"Sin? Kade has it?"

I huffed, throwing my hands up. "No--someone stole the damn thing from him."

"No, Kade had it all this time?" he walked over. "You're saying Kade could control this weapon with no trouble."

I grimaced, looking him up and down. "Yeah, what about it?"

He turned away, "Of course...He's the one. He's the one entwined with the Sin!" He turned back to me, pointing near my face. "You must help him get it back, Valerie. "

"Why?" I took a step back.

His finger shook in the air . "Because...Because if he doesn't, he'll die. He'll be great help if you want to survive what the window did to you. You two need each other."

"This sounds fimilar." I rolled my eyes, getting both of my shoulders grabbed.

Dr. Nolind shook his head. "I'm serious, Kade can get you into the F. E. They made an antidote for the her venom, incase anyone got bitten by her."

"But I was-."

"Doesn't matter!" He shook me, speaking shaky "You must find that weapon before the Conductors, Valerie."

I nodded quickly, blinking then all of a sudden Kade's face was near mine. I gasped, jerking my head back and thunking it against what felt like a wall. Groaning, I felt the throbbing headache coming on.

"Jesus Chr-." In seconds, I got pulled into a toasty hug. I grunted when I couldn't breathe, patting his back. "Sorry." He let go, sitting up and seeing I was back in my room. I glanced around and ran my hand through my hair. "...You okay?"

"I think so." I blinked up at the ceiling. "I was talking with Nolind."

"Nolind..." He sopke soft, looking to him with a worried look. After a minute, he bit his lip and looked away. "What'd he say?"

"To help you find your stupid stick." I weakly laughed, coughing.

"No...I can do it on my own, Valerie." He huffed, getting off the bed and turned his back to me. Suddenly sneezing, he made a awkward noise and stared down at his sleeve. He stared long and hard before shaking his head, "I'll be fine." He muttered harshly, storming out. Not even a minute later, the lights flickering. What was that about?

"Has Kade come back yet?"

"No..." Aiden whispered, rubbing my covered side then glanced down to his fiddling fingers. "We need to talk about a few things, Valerie." He sighed, staring at the wall.

I gripping my pillow more under the blankets, watching rub his hands together then dropped his head. "I think it's best if we didn't see much of each other anymore."

I felt a dagger in my heart, licking my lips and looking down. "Because of Summer...I understand."

"Not that..." He sucked a breath in, taking a minute before he glanced over at me with an apologetic look. "I mean--I am no longer stating you as my bodygaurd but Rex will be."

"What-why?" I gasped, shooting up. "You know I'll get better, Aiden!"

His eyes returned to his hands, gulping. "...When?" Just the word felt like an extra dagger to my heart, making me speechless. Clearly, he's thought a lot about this. "You can accept this and take his role as his secondary."

"No." I snapped, shaking my head. "No..NO!" I yelled, ripping the blankets of myself. "I will not follow under someone who can't beat me in a fight! I will never!"

"And how about me? Why follow me all this time?!" He shouted back.

Because I felt normal thanks to you!

screamed in my head but it wouldn't come out, scaring me to death. I bit my tongue and turned my head away, crawling off the bed. He groaned my name but I ignored him, storming off to the closet. "Valerie, what are you doing?!"

"I'm going with Kade!" I screamed, turning around to him in the the doorway. Glaring me down. "I'm going to help him find his stupid stick then if I have to, I'm going to make him take me to get that damn thing to cure me!" I turned back, grabbing clothes.

"Don't speak nonsense."

"Oh go pout on your wife." I snarled, looking for a suitcase. When he didn't response, it threw me off. He didn't? I stopped, feeling the awkwardness swallow me. I slowly turned back, seeing him snap his head down and grip the doorway with white knuckles. The third dagger plunged, cracking it clean in half now, fighting the tears back. "You...you proposed to her...didn't you?"

He picked his head up, appearing to be sad ridden. Sucking a breath in, "...Valerie, I'm sorry."

"Get out." I growled.

"Valerie."

"GET OUT!" I screamed, storming over. "Get out of here! I'd never want to see your face again!" I shoved him back.

"Valerie, just listen to me." I slapped his hand away, shoving him back.

"I don't care!" I yelled, letting the tears come. "I hate you!" I shoved him again, his back hitting the door. I sucked a shaky breath in and pointing at him, sniffling. "I hate you...I swear to God if I ever see you again, I will kill you!" I screamed. Aiden sighed heavy, clamping his eyes shut but nodded gently. He stood up, opening the door. Hesitating, I shoved him out and slammed the door. Locking it, I leaned up against the door and cried. Sliding down gradually, my face fell into my knees. My words echoed in my head, making me cry harder. I threw my head back and screamed with the breath in my lungs. I should have known this was going to happen. This is Kade meant, I was meant to be for no one! I screamed for Kade, rocking and crying his name. Ten minutes of practically chanting it, I gave up and crawled off over to the bed. Grabbing the blanket, I dragged it off to the closet, curling up into a ball in and crying as I stared up at the light. Why? Why was this all happening to me? Just when I thought things were getting better...

The lightbulb suddenly flickered, automatically looking to the doorway when I heard a deep grunt. Then my name whispered, I responded back with a soft whimper to only fear footsteps. Then there he was. Looking stunned, sadness soon melted onto his face while he dropped his hands from the doorway.

"Oh, Valerie."

"Why didn't you tell me?" I cried, cringing more into a ball.

He sighed heavy, walking in. "Give me some of the blanket."

"No." I growled, sniffling.

"Hard ass." He snorted, feeling him suddenly lay behind him and wrap his arm around my waist and pulled me closer. "If I had told you the future, it would ruin everything. And I'm not fond of ruining what's good for you." He murmured. I cried, clamping my eyes shut; now trembling. He exhaled, kissing my shoulder through the blanket and huffed. Letting him, he pulled the blankets from under me so he could get some. For once, his touch was warm and inviting as his stunning sight. He purred lightly, laying his cheek on my shoulder. "Everything's going to be fine, Valerie."
