xxxix . lake trip

start of season 9

The whole family was on a boat trip, which Tiana had been invited on. She didn't imagine her first vacation with Luke to be a family vacation. Sh expected something more intimate and romantic. She'd take what she could get, though. Lake life rocked, especially when Phil drove the boat to fast.

The reason Jay wanted them to go on the lake trip was so that they could see the first total eclipse in ninety-nine years. No one else cared about it as much as Jay did, they just wanted a getaway.

Tiana walked out of her room at the same time Manny walked out of his. However, he was fully dressed, and she was still in her pyjamas, messy hair, bare face.

"Shit, should I get dressed?" She asked.

"You may as well eat first, honey," Claire said, sliding a plate of breakfast over to her as she sat down beside Luke. Claire then turned her attention to Manny. "Manny, how do you take your eggs?"

"Like God made them," Manny said, cracking a raw egg into a glass and drinking it.

"Work it, Gaston," Tiana said sleepily.

"Manny, what are you doing?" Haley asked.

"This isn't Manny," Luke said, "It's Manuel. He's trying to reinvent himself for college. He's going for a strong, silent type."

"Hey, don't try to define me, man," Manny said.

"Manuel's gonna be gone in five minutes," Haley said.

'Manuel' cracked his neck. "Hey, it is what it is, man."

Tiana finished off her breakfast, leaving to go and get changed as Jay started banging on about the eclipse. Tiana soon came out of the room in her bikini, with a small dress over it to cover up.

She realised Haley, Alex and Luke were outside, so she went out there, too. "We're going to a party," Haley said, "There was this guy flirting with me, but Luke thinks it was a girl flirting with him."

"Why would it matter if a girl was flirting with you?" Tiana asked Luke.

"It wouldn't," Luke said, "I just wanna prove Haley wrong."

Tiana thought for a minute. She could do with a party. "If it is a girl and she flirts with you, I'm punching her. Let's go!"

The group took a smaller boat to the island, and searched all around for the so called 'party'. However, they didn't find one. In fact, they came back to find their boat and the other people's jet skis gone.

"Oh my God, freaks, they robbed us!" Tiana said.

"They lured us out here and stole our stuff," Alex said.

"And you thought that guy really liked you," Luke said to Haley.

They all sat down on a log, as Manny tried rubbing sticks together to start a fire.

"Go faster!" Alex said, "It's not a violin, you're trying to start a fire."

"Hey, chill, man," Manny said.

"That's never gonna work," Luke said, "We need a better way to let someone know we're out here." He looked at Tiana, who was yet again picking at her nails. "Stop that."

"Stop that? We're all gonna starve to death on an island and you're telling me not to pick at my nails? That should be the least of your worries!"

"You're right, because the most of my worries is the fact that we've been here for, like, half an hour and you're already going crazy. We'll be fine, it's not like they're not gonna notice."

"Of course they're gonna notice, but will they find us before we rot?"

"Tiana, stop. Jesus."

Tiana looked at Luke slightly shocked. She didn't think she'd heard him call her by her full name since he gave her the nickname 'Tia'. He was mad. He'd been mad at her before, sure, but not since they'd started dating.

She stood up and began to walk away. "Hey, where you going?" Haley asked.

"I'm gonna go and see if I can find a way to alert people that we're here. You guys stay."

"Oh, alright."

She wondered off into the forest, not managing to find anything to help their situation. She suddenly heard a twig snapping behind her, whipping her head around to see what it was.

"Hello?" She said into the trees.

"Tiana, it's me, chill," Luke said, emerging from the bushes.

"God, I thought I was about to get-"

"Don't say killed. You're freaking me the fuck out."

"What?"

"Going on about how we're gonna die here. You're scaring me. I know I'm always the optimistic one out of us but- but what if you're right? What if no one finds us, and we're stuck here until we just starve to death?"

"Luke, I was just being over dramatic. I'm sorry if I put that into your head."

"You didn't. It was already there. I don't know what it is, maybe it's because I'm getting older, but I've been so much more paranoid lately. Like, I'm actually starting to care about my life."

"Is that not a good thing?"

"Not when you're stuck on a stranded island."

"Fair enough. Are you mad at me?"

Luke sighed. "No, no, I'm not. I'm sorry for snapping at you. That was mean of me, I was just worrying."

"It's okay, I shouldn't have been so dramatic about things. We good?"

"We're good." Luke moved closer towards Tiana and wrapped her in a hug. "You know, we're alone right now."

"In a forest?"

"Trying something new. It's adventurous."

Before Luke could make any real advances, the sky suddenly got very dark. "It's the eclipse. Luke, we should get back to the others. You're grandpas gonna be so mad we're not seeing this together."

Luke and Tiana ran back to the group, to now find Ben, Alex's boyfriend, floating towards them on a unicorn floatie.

"He came to rescue me!" Alex said, as they all ran over to the floatie. The light finally came back and Manny picked up a thick branch from the ground.

"We can use this as an oar," he said. Haley, Tiana, Luke and Manny all got on the floatie.

"There's not enough room for all of us," Haley said.

"Well, the two of us can stay while you-" Ben began, but Alex ran towards the floatie.

"I'll come back for you!"

The group weren't the only ones who missed the eclipse, though. In fact, the only person Jay got to spend it with was Joe. Tiana now felt a lot worse about missing it.

After a lecture to the family, Jay got into a row boat and began to row away from them, upset because he thought his family didn't have any good memories of him.

"Grandpa, stop!" Alex said, "We have tons of greta memories of you!"

"You're just saying that!" Jay said.

They all thought of examples of good memories they had with Jay, until he finally decided to come back.

They all sat in a circle, with Phil playing guitar, all of them singing Total Eclipse of the Heart.

"Is this even a song?" Luke asked.

Tiana's jaw dropped. "You don't know Total Eclipse of the Heart? I'm embarrassed for you."

"You know, you're a pretty good singer."

"I'd say I'm pretty good at everything."

"Pretty good at a few things, really good at some things, and perfect at most things."

"That was so cringe I loved it."

This was a memory worth remembering.
