Chapter 9

ephemeral

(adj.) lasting for a very short time

The next morning you awoke tucked tightly into your bed covers. Sleepily you flopped them behind you and sat on the edge of the bed, afterwards you stretched and felt your backbone crack a pleasant sound. In a second all of your sleepiness was gone when the memories of the day before rushed back and it made your lips curve into a soft smile once you traced your fingertips against them, remembering the kiss from yesterday.

A sudden rush of excitement flew throughout your body making you stand up speedily and twirl around happily. The thing was, you weren't confident enough to announce that you and Hiccup were a thing so you wanted your relationship to be a secret and thankfully Hiccup agreed.

After doing your normal morning routine you dashed outside and headed straight to the clubhouse and to your surprise, nobody was there. For some seconds you stared around with your eyebrows furrowed but then you heard dragon roars coming from the dome, the confused look never left your face till you arrived there and it was because of the unusual sight in front of you.

Random Grounkles were hovering above the ground and Fishlegs was frantically running around all of them while up in the air Stormfly was leading a group of Deadly Nadders behind her. Snotlout on the other hand was building wooden circles and the twins were nowhere to be seen. Your eyes landed on a familiar auburn haired boy and the insides of your stomach began to twist.

"Hey." You greeted once you neared Hiccup who smiled at you, his smile was so warm you felt like melting. Nonetheless the two of you were watching the others struggle with Thor knows what and you being the curious person you are, asked what all the commission was about. To that Hiccup replied something about 'Bork week' and after some minutes of clarification and details you were hyped and impatiently waiting for attending the festival.

At the moment Hiccup was telling you jokes and it left you laughing quite loud, but your laughter was cut off when Stormfly landed and Astrid effortlessly jumped off of her. A smile was plastered on her face as she walked to you so you did the reasonable thing and grinned back at her.

"Nice flying!" you complimented Astrid before even formally greeting her, she replied with a simple 'thank you' and sighed after placing her hands on her hips. After closer examination you saw the dark circles under her eyes and wondered why she was this tired so you asked her if she was okay.

"I'm alright, just tired from training the Nadders." Astrid clarified and once she finished talking you looked at the dragons behind her who were happily eating their fish. "I've been trying to make them fly in a formation and it look's like we're making good progress."Astrid continued with a proud expression on her face, she was preparing the Deadly Nadders for the air parade and you knew in the end everything would turn out perfect.

"I really wish me and Crystal could join the parade but she doesn't have others from her kind." You said sadly, ever since you found her you made it your goal to find other dragons like her but the more you searched the more it was unlikely to find any, though that didn't stop you because you would go to the end of the world just for Crystal.

"Maybe Toothless and Crystal could go together?" Astrid suggested and in a second your eyes locked with Hiccup and you saw how his face was lit up suddenly, matching yours perfectly. The idea was so genius it made you squeal and hug Astrid tightly, both of them were surprised by your action but didn't have time to react because you quickly stormed away to the dragon stables.

"Crystal!" You yelled cheerfully and that made the dragons, who were previously chasing each other, stop dead in their tracks and stare at you with a confused expression on their faces. You held your hands in a way that they resembled wings and began running around, chanting 'We're going to an air parade' at the same time.

"Well somebody is awfully excited." A voice spoke and it made your smile turn into a grin once you saw Hiccup leaning on the doorway. Without a second thought you threw yourself onto him and pulled him into an embrace, luckily Hiccup was strong enough to endure your weight and prevented both of you from falling down.

"We have to start practicing right now! I have so many ideas, now lets go!" you said and ran towards Crystal, once you reached her you quickly mounted up and stared at Hiccup with puppy eyes in a way to make him agree with you. And in a way that worked because Hiccup just shrugged and began walking to Toothless, Crystal flew away into the sky and did some spins while waiting for the boys.

"Do you still keep Toothless' automatic tail? The one which he can fly on his own?" You asked when Hiccup finally arrived. He once mentioned it and you were thankful it stayed in your memory because it would be a lot useful if he had it. In response Hiccup nodded, his lips curved upward into a smile and it was safe to tell him your idea.

"Okay so here is how it goes, Toothless and Crystal will fly into each other while we're standing on their backs and when they're near enough me and you will jump and swap places so I will be on Toothless and you on Crystal!" You explained and Hiccup placed his index finger onto his cheek while he was thinking about the plan you told him.

"Eh, why not." Was all he said before he flew away to his hut to find Toothless' tail. You stayed in the air and tried to stand up, after some shaky legs and wobbling back and forth you managed to stand up. After you were certain that you won't loose your balance and fall down, you told Crystal to fly forward and gradually increase her speed.

Crystal did what she was told and in the first couple of seconds everything was alright, but as she went faster the wind increased as well and it made you stumble backwards and because of that you lost your stability and fell sideways. Thankfully your dragon reacted quickly and flew underneath you so that made you land onto your saddle with a loud huff.

"We're back." Hiccup spoke from behind and you turned your head to face him. There was a tight smile on his face and it was so contagious it made you smile back. Your gaze fell on Toothless' tail and you saw his usual red tail fin was gone and was replaced with a golden one, the saddle was gone and so were the stirrups.

"Let's start!"

-----

Firstly Hiccup and you tried standing on the back of your dragons while they flew with high speed, which was harder than it seemed, but after many falls from your dragons both of you mastered keeping your balance.

The next goal was you and Hiccup to stand up at the same time, it was fairly easy to do that and you completed that task in a couple of minutes. Then came the hard part, jumping to the other dragon. Either you jumped too far away or not close enough the task seemed impossible at first and after hours of training both of you got the hang of it and even learned to land gracefully.

And now all of you were in the crowded center of Berk. The air parade was beginning and Astrid was the first one to start,  from the formation the Deadly Nadders were, to the synced wing ruffling, the dragons flew in perfect harmony. The Berkians were staring in awe as if they saw the most majestic thing ever, they all thought it was easy but none of them knew how hard Astrid worked to achieve that.

Next were the twins who were now flying around the sky without a certain direction, all the time Barf was breathing out gas and left green stain behind them. The second Belch ignited the gas with his sparks, the unidentified shape of the thing in the sky turned into fire and it represented a helmet. The vikings gasped loudly and clapped in unison.

The rings that Snotlout was making were now placed on a nearby cliff and it was visible to everyone. Hookfang flew behind them and concentrated his fire in front of him then with one twist of his wings he sent it towards the rings and they were set on fire. After that Hookfang and Snotlout proceeded to fly inside the seven rings and as they passed them the fire behind them disappeared.

"See you." You waved at Hiccup as you went to the other side of the village. While Crystal flew you watched Fishlegs and his Grounkles fly up in the sky and form a circle of dragons, Meatlug was the first one to fly away and the rest of the dragons followed behind her and they all form a straight line. 'Drop.' was the only thing Fishlegs said before all off them began falling down in the same time and just as they were about to crash down Fishlegs uttered 'Hover.' and they all stopped simultaneously.

Finally it was your time to shine.

Hiccup and you were on the opposite sides of the village and your dragons were patiently waiting for the Rumblehorn roar which was the signal. Once you heard the signal, Crystal started flying and time to time increased her speed, five seconds passed and the center came into view.

"Now." You murmured to yourself and got up, even if your eyes were half squinted because of the strong wind, you could still see Hiccup and Toothless in front of you. Your heart was pounding against your chest like a thousand drums, half because of the adrenaline and half because you were terrified, not because of falling from Crystal, but the fact that you might slip and fail the stunt. Even if it might not seem a big thing for you, it was,  and if you didn't do it correctly it would be a mistake you could never forget.

When Toothless and Crystal were side to side time seemed to slow down and in those milliseconds of preparing to jump you locked eyes with Hiccup. His face showed nothing but confidence while yours were haggard with fear, but then he gave you one of the sweetest smile and it seemed like you could burst in happiness.

The second you landed on Toothless the crowd below erupted into cheers which made you a bit happy, but then you remembered the next step and quickly sat down into Toothless' saddle.  He began flying up vertically and neck-to-neck with Crystal. At the same time both of them fired in front and when their fire was mixed with Crystal's fire and it made explosions everywhere to which the crowed grew even more wild.

You then jumped away from Toothless, even if you were falling and the ground wasn't too far away you still remained calm and looked at the sight in front of you. Hiccup had done the same and the dragons flew in a crescent and took their rightful rider at the same time, you were now on Crystal's back and she roared with delight which matched the echoing of joy coming from the vikings below.

Toothless and Crystal began flying down in spirals while crossing each other, you took a glance down and saw that half of the crowds were extolling and the other half were throwing their fists in the air. The mass cheering for lifted your spirit a lot, to a point were even you yourself applauded enthusiastically.

When Crystal landed you were met with tons of smiling faces who huddled around you and congratulated you and if you had to guess you would say that Hiccup was having the same problem.

"(Y/N)!" A voice called from the crowd and just as you turned around you were faced with Hiccup who had a proud look on his face, his lips were risen in a toothy smile and you noticed the little spark in his forest green eyes. Without a second thought you flung yourself onto him and tightly hugged Hiccup, for you the hug seemed to last for a second because before you know it Hiccup was puling away and it left you cherishing the last seconds of the hug. The moment you separated the gang arrived with grins plastered on their faces.

"Oh my Thor! You guys, that was amazing!" Fishlegs exclaimed, he swung his hands close to his body and squealed loudly. You thanked him with the same tone and excitement and proceeded to hug Fishlegs who was taken aback from your action but returned the hug some seconds later.

"How did you guys achieve that in one day?" Astrid asked once all the gang was gathered around you, Astrid had a look of disbelief on her face and you were amazed that she liked your stunt so much. You didn't knew how to answer her question so you simply replied with 'practice'.

"But ours was nothing compared to yours and Fislegs's stunt. I mean, you guys trained wild dragons to do synchronized movements and that takes an effort, while Toothless and Crystal are already trained to it was fairly easy." You commented and everybody agreed with your statement, the gang was so happy it made you proud of yourself.

You spent the next few hours in just talking with the everyone, occasionally people would come to all of you and compliment how great the air parade was and of course you all thanked them for their kind words.

Suddenly you felt something nudge your sides and then your hand was placed on Crystal's head. Her normal happy face was replaced with a tired one and till now you didn't realize that you were exhausted as well. You bid your farewell with the gang and mounted Crystal, just as she was going to fly up Hiccup stopped you and said he will come home too, in response you smiled cheekily.

"So you want some alone time, eh?" You teased Hiccup who only winked in response, which made you flustered in a second.

-----

By the time both of you reached The Edge, the last rays of the sun were slowly fading away behind the horizon and the sky was beginning to darken. At the moment Hiccup and you were sitting on the edge of the docks while your dragons were sleeping next to each other, since the moment you sat down you laid your head onto Hiccup's shoulder while he had his hand tightly wrapped around you.

"I don't know if I have said this before, but I'm really happy I met you Hiccup." You uttered your current thought and remembered the first time he woke up in your cave, that memory was so clear it was stored in your brain forever.

"Same here." Hiccup replied absentmindedly, his lips curved into a tight smile while he was watching the starry sky above, he seemed very lost in thought so you decided to quickly kiss his cheek. That seemed to break him out of his trance and Hiccup chuckled, after that he pulled you closer and pressed his lips against yours.

His soft touch made all the tension in your body melt down, leaving happiness rush throughout your body. The kiss was short yet passionate and it left you both smiling widely when you pulled away, your timing was perfect because in that minute both of you saw your friends nearing the stables and waving at you.

"Why did you two leave? You missed the fireworks!" Ruffnut questioned after he landed and you and Hiccup glanced at each other before shrugging your shoulders awkwardly. When the rest of the gang exited the stables without their dragons, they greeted both you and Hiccup and went to their huts, leaving you alone with Hiccup once again.

You fixed your gaze at the ocean in front of you and watched how the water was shimmering from the moonlight illuminating it, for a moment you considered diving in for a quick swim but it was cold so you decided to only stare at the magnificent view.

"Remember the conversation we had when you woke up after you got shot?" Hiccup blurt all of the sudden and your thoughts quickly drifted to that day. The funny thing about that day was how flustered Hiccup was when he realized his hand was intertwined with yours and if you had to bet you would say he ran away just so he can hide his blush. Nonetheless, you nodded in response and watched how Hiccup turned away seeming unsure as to what he was going to say next.

"Well, why were you so calm about the situation? You replied so coldly back then." Hiccup questioned once again and then added how he had been thinking about that lately which made you wonder why he even remembers that.

"I uh...I don't know honestly. When you told me that I could've died I just thought that you know, nobody will miss me." The moment you said that Hiccup's eyes widened and his expression softened. He breathed out a 'no' which held such sadness and despair that it left you surprised.

"But why? Who wouldn't miss a perfect girl like you?" His words made your stomach twist because they were so nice, but you knew those words were false because you had so much flaws yet you buried that thought in the back of your head and focused on the conversation.

"Being alone for years, I really thought that I would die alone. " You spoke the truth and watch how Hiccup's face saddened even more, the corners of his lips were bent down into a frown and you had to light up the mood because otherwise you would be facing a crying Hiccup in the next minute.

"But then I met you." You smiled and watched how Hiccup's face lit up for a second and then continued talking, "I made friends, which I thought would never happen, then I got a proper place that I could call home and finally I found the best boyfriend ever." You finished and quickly pecked Hiccup's lips, your sudden action made him wide his eyes and then give you a cheesy grin.

For the next half an hour you continued to ramble on how grateful you were about the things that happened to you in these couple of months then the theme changed to Hiccup who admitted that he first fell in love with you after you saved him, which made you a blushing mess.

Both of you decided that you should go to your huts and have a goodnight sleep, when you reached Hiccup's hut you looked around to check if anyone is awake and thankfully nobody was. You then placed a soft kiss on his cheek and giggled before dashing to your hut together with Crystal.

What you didn't know was that Hiccup had placed his hand on the spot and had a crimson red blush spreading through his cheeks.

-----

The next morning you woke up and instantly heard the faint sound of hammer hitting against a metal surface, you knew that only Hiccup tinkers with metal so you got intrigued very easily. But you decided that he should wait till you goof-off with Crystal for a bit, after that both of you ate and left your hut. Once he saw you Toothless let out an excited shriek which made Hiccup jump.

"Good morning." You said and in a way tried to hide your laughter, but Hiccup sent you a warning glare to which you only giggled. Your gaze then fell on a metal blade that was attached to a weird-looking handle, so you decided to ask what it was.

"Oh this? I call it the Dragon Blade!" Hiccup exclaimed and swiftly spun around the small sword in his hand, from the corner of your eyes you saw Crystal and Toothless both watching it move as if they were hypnotized by it.

"Come on, its just a sword. What's so fun about it." You teased and rolled your eyes, you then lightly crossed your arms and waited for his response. Hiccup, without braking eye-contact, with a click of a button set the whole thing on fire. The moment you saw that your jaw dropped because you were too amazed by the thing in front, you stared in awe till Hiccup retracted the fire.

"Not so bad now, is it?" Hiccup joked and you saw a smirk play on his lips, it annoyed you how he was right and you had to admit that the sword was pretty cool.

"Yeah, but come on you can do better than 'Dragon Blade'." You joked and before Hiccup could say anything you spoke again, "Anyways I'm going to explore with Crystal for a bit, so be sure to make a one for me too!"

While flying you began plotting the things you wanted to do today and the only things that came to your mind was to visit some islands nearby, meet some new dragons and fill in your journal. After some minutes of flying, Crystal landed on the first island you saw and instantly you started your journey.

In the next hours you were met some Gronckles here and there along with Deadly Nadders, just the usual stuff, yet before you left your gaze fell upon two Monstrous Nightmares fighting over a large egg which couldn't belong to their species. Your eyes widened and Crystal quickly rushed towards them, she shot out fire and it made the two dragons fly away leaving the mysterious egg unprotected. Without a second thought you took it and went straight home.

"What in Thor's name is that?" You were met with Snotlout's voice the moment you stepped in the club house, all around him was the gang doing their usual things and enjoying each others presence, but they all looked at you curious to what Snotlout meant.

"Well if you must know." You rolled your eyes at Snotlout and continued you talking, "I was exploring and I found this egg. Can you recognize it, Fishlegs?" You asked the blonde haired boy and watched how his expression changed to a focused one as he was examining the egg closer.

"Nope, not a clue. I've never seen an egg like this before." He replied. Internally you expected another answer because Fishlegs always knew everything about dragons so this was very shocking to you.

"Maybe its a new dragon." Hiccup suggested with a hint of excitement in his voice, your eyes locked and you couldn't help but smile. Your thoughts drifted to an idea that the dragon might be a Night Fury or better yet a Stealth Strike, you then pondered what it would be like if you actually found an island full of those species of dragons. Your thoughts were quickly cut off when you heard the ruffling of wing and turned you head to face the chicken sitting on top of the egg.

"I think you'll need a little more power to hatch that egg." Astrid joked and all of you laughed except for Tuff who looked shocked as if somebody offended him.

"Haters gonna hate, hatchers gonna hatch." Tuffnut said with one hand firmly placed on his side while he clicked his fingers on the other one. After his line, a proud smug face appeared on his face like he said the smartest thing in the world.

"Okay, anyways, we should look in the Dragon book." You said and took the book from Fishlegs while he had it held out, but even after warning that he didn't find anything inside you were still convinced that there has to be something you had missed.

But your search was shortly cut when the egg began to crack and everyone rose their eyebrows, a sudden explosion followed and it made the chicken fly up and land safely in Tuffnut's hands. When you finally looked at the dragon you gasped because it was so small and cute, it had cadmioum yellow scaly skin with blue wings coming from the back of its horns.

It seemed like everyone shared you thought because they all awed and looked at the dragon lovingly, but that changed once an ear piercing bawl escaped the dragon's mouth and it made everybody cover their ears as much as they can.

-----

"Will that thing ever shut up?!" Ruff complained after hours of sitting and listening it to it cry, clearly everybody was annoyed by it, but it seemed to have gotten to Ruffnuts nerves because she looked the most angriest from all of you inside the clubhouse.

The thing that confused all of you was that after the chicken crooned the dragon suddenly stopped screaming and it got closer to it. Everyone's frowns were lifted up as well as their eyebrows and they all watched with a puzzled face, the dragon proceeded to sing something similar to the tone the chicken sang in and then spit out something that captured chicken in a solid stone.

"Is that Death Song cocoon?" Astrid asked in disbelief and you internally slapped yourself for not remembering the name sooner, how could you forget the dragon that you had a near-death experience in which you barely made it alive. All around you the rest groaned even more and you felt terrible about it, you imagined how much everyone hates you at the moment so you decided to take things in your own hands.

"I found the dragon so its my responsibility to take it back to its island." You straight up told everybody your plan and grabbed the little dragons in your hands without looking at anyone. The screaming from the dragon was too much but you forced yourself to somehow ignore it.

"Yes, good idea, have fun." Ruffnut bluntly said and it made everyone glare daggers towards her direction.

"No, we're coming with you." Hiccup said and before he could do anything else Astrid stopped him.

"Its too dangerous to go back, Hiccup." Astrid said and mentioned their previous experience there, which was same as yours, the only difference being that they were together. But Astrid was right and that only made you worried because you didn't want anyone risking their lives, the Death Song dragon is very powerful and one of the most dangerous.

"And we don't even know if he can bond with dragons other than his parents!" Fishlegs piped in, you looked at him and saw how concerned he was with his eyebrows furrowed and his lips pursed together.

"But we can't have it here." Snotlout proved a point, everyone wanted to disagree but they all knew that he was right so there's no arguing with that. You were considering options that might benefit both sides but Hiccup beat you to it.

"How about we take it to Melody Island, help it bond and leave when we are certain the dragon is safe?" He suggested, the gang all agreed and went to the stable to get their dragons yet you still thought it would've been better if you went alone. Before your journey began Hiccup supplied all of you with ear-plugs for the dragons so that they can't be affected from the Death Song's melody.

On your way to the island you were contemplating the scene from some minutes ago, the question that stayed in your mind was why did the dragon stop after the chicken bawked and with the same melody as the chicken. You cleared you throat and decided to test the theory.

The sky is dark,

and the hills are white,

As the Storm King

speeds from the north tonight

And this is the song

The Storm King sings,

As over the world his cloak he flings.

Sleep, sleep, little one, sleep

He rustles his wings and gruffly sings,

Sleep, little one, sleep.

When you finished the song the dragon was already fast asleep and that made you grin joyously, once you looked around you were met with faces filled with amazement. The gang all complimented your singing and it left you smile widely. You looked down, sighing softly because the screaming finally stopped, peace and quiet was finally restored.

"The dragon isn't the only one that fell asleep." Hiccup said and you followed his gaze to the twins, who were leaning on each other and sleeping that only made you wonder how they were comfortable in that position but didn't say anything only laughed quietly.

An island appeared and the more you got closer to it the more you heard the familiar melody, thankfully Hiccups ear-plugs worked because none of dragons did anything except fly. A loud roar made you snap your head to find the source and instantly you were greeted by an enormous Death Song that looked ten times bigger than the one you were holding.

Suddenly it spat its cocoon and one by one it send everyone on the ground, the moment it was going to fire at you the small dragon jumped and flew away. Crystal landed with a loud thud, but it was not hard enough to break the strong orange cocoon that you're both trapped in, you looked at the gang and saw their worried expressions which made you worry even more.

The Death Song dragon stood in front of you and it looked ready to eat your dragon, but before it could reach you the smaller dragon jumped in and it made the other one take a step back. The Death Song sang a melody and then stopped, it looked at the smaller one and waited for it to do something, but once it sang a different melody it was thrown to the wall by the Death Song's tail.

"No!" You yelled loudly, but the fear washed over you when the bigger dragon concentrated its gaze onto you, it left you frantically thinking of ways to escape but an idea popped in your mind and your realized you didn't have to move at all.

You began singing the song from earlier with the tone you heard from the Death Song's melody, and once you were done the smaller dragon instantly copied you and when it sang the same tone it made the bigger dragon snap its head at it. While they were exchanging melodies you heard something break next to you and saw Hiccup freed himself, your eyebrows arched up and then you noticed the flaming sword in his hand.

"(Y/N)! How did you know it would react that way?" Fishlegs questioned with a hint of excitement in his voice, you replied that it was just an assumption and that you weren't quite sure it would work, but thankfully it did.

"Looks like they're bonding." Tuff said and it made everyone turn their head towards the dragons to see them happily singing to each other. Then you heard the sound of cocoon break and before you know it you were free, Crystal shook off the remaining pieces and walked over to you.

"Are we done here? I want leave." Snotlout said with a tired voice and all of you looked at each other, sneaking some glances from one person to another until you decided to break the silence.

"Let's go home."

-----

"Crystal! Get over here!" You exclaimed, a hint of annoyance was laced in your tone and it matched the irritated look on your face, on the other hand, your dragon had a contrast expression with her wide smug smile.

For the past half an hour Crystal was running in circles while you chased after her with a wet brush in your hand and bit by bit your hope to bathe your dragon seemed to slowly vanish. But that all changed when Crystal slipped from one of the puddles that had formed on the ground, it was enough to make her fall down face first and to that you let out small chuckles.

"Clumsy like your rider." you joked and speedily walked to Crystal, flopping down onto her back you let out a cry of victory. Joy overflowed through your body as if you had won a game of Maces and Talons. Crystal only grunted in response and because you won fair and square she only laid down while you scrubbed her scaly feathers, you then poured rose petal liquid that quickly got rid of the stinky smell.

You dusted your hands in satisfaction, a wide smile played on your lips when you saw how sparkling clean your dragon was. Crystal walked over to you and nudged her snout on your stomach, you patted her head and thought how obedient she was. But that thought quickly faded away when in a second you were covered in dragon saliva. A deafening shriek escaped your lips while you tried to brush off the liquid off while in front of you Crystal let out gurgling sounds meaning that she was laughing at your state.

"Well this is a rare sight." Your head snapped at the source of the voice and your eyes locked with Hiccup's green ones. He bit his lip trying to suppress his laugh but it didn't work because soon enough he was laughing loudly, it sounded like music to your ears but you still kept your playful glare just to show that you were 'angry' at him.

Hiccup's laugh turned into a yelp when Crystal forged in and licked him as well. The tables have turned and now you were the one laughing while Hiccup was glaring, you stroked Crystal's head in a way to show that she did a good job.

-----

After the meeting in the stables you both agreed to go to Cherry Blossom island. It had special meaning to you after inspecting it and finding that it was not exhibited by any humans, Hiccup and you decided to call it your own private island.

Both of you were now sat under the shade of the tree whilst your dragons were chasing each other in circles. For some minutes Hiccup and you passed the time by telling jokes to one another and because you were all out it was Hiccup's turn.

"How do you get a one-armed Berkian out of a tree?"

"How?"

"You wave."

Suddenly the island was echoing your loud laughter and in seconds you found it hard to breathe from laughing too much, the only air that went to your lungs was from the quick gasps between your unstoppable chuckles. And soon after you found yourself clutching your stomach feeling the muscles in it tighten.

"How do you confuse a Jorgensen? You put him in a round arena and tell him to go to the corner." Hiccup didn't give you time to compose yourself and now after telling the next joke, your face grew warmer than ever before and the tears of joy began rolling down your rosy cheeks.

"What do you cal-" Hiccup began to talk but you held a hand in front of his face. "No more jokes, please." You somehow breathed out through your laughing, in response Hiccup only chuckled lightly. If you had to guess you would say he could keep telling jokes all day because they didn't stop coming.

I swear he's doing this on purpose.

Crystal and Toothless ran in front of you and Hiccup which made the cherry blossom petals from below fly up and land on both of your heads. While you took off all of yours you saw that Hiccup's hair was full of them, but he seemed to not feel them. You tried not to laugh, but a short chortle escaped your lips making Hiccup glance at you.

"What?" He asked with a puzzled face, still oblivious to the petals on his head. You told him to wait and scooted closer to him, ignoring the confused staring. You then began ruffling his hair, making the petals fly everywhere but that wasn't your goal, it was actually messing up his hair.

"Hey!" Hiccup exclaimed with a surprised tone in his voice. You burst in giggles and immediately got up, ignoring him calling your name from behind you sprinted to Crystal and mounted up. After that Crystal immediately flew away, as if she knew you wanted to flee.

Looking back you saw Hiccup climbing on his saddle with his lips pursed and eyebrows furrowed together. "Oh gods, I got him so good!" you chuckled and heard him calling your name, turning around again you saw angry Hiccup and Toothless flying at your direction. Some seconds passed and you got bored, you thought that by now you would've caught up.

"Aw, Toothless I thought you were the fastest dragon! But you can't even catch up with us!" You yelled and heard Crystal gurgle, obviously finding it funny. Behind you though, Toothless roared and began gaining on Crystal. Soon enough you were neck-to-neck with Hiccup, who was playfully glaring at you.

"Crystal, lets show these slowpokes who's the fastest dragon, eh?" You purposely said it loud so they could hear, after that you looked at Hiccup who's eyebrows were curved up.

"Are you challenging us to a race?" Hiccup asked in disbelief, his forest green eyes widened slightly while a grin played on his lips.

"Yep! First one to Thor's Forest is the winner!" You explained and Crystal immediately sped up, not giving the boys any chance for questions. You could've played it fair and announce the race properly, but cheating and having a head start sounded more fun. Some moments later you spun your head around expecting to find Hiccup and Toothless behind you, but they were nowhere to be seen.

"Looking for someone?" You heard Hiccup ask from somewhere and almost jumped from Crystal, she shook a bit because she was surprised as well. After you spun around you were met with Hiccup who was now facing you upside down. Before having a chance to say anything Toothless spun himself around and Hiccup did a few clicks in his stirring making Toothless storm far ahead. Below you Crystal grunted and you patted her head.

"C'moon girl, we got this." You stroked her gently in a reassuring manner and after that she flew faster than you have ever seen her before. As she increased her speed, your eyes began to water from the wind hitting against your face so you squinted your eyes, furrowing your eyebrows at the same time.

"There's the island!" you exclaimed and pointed at Dragon's Edge, though it was very far away it was still quite visible. Crystal noticeably sped up even more and you smirked when you saw the boys up front.

Crystal was able to catch up with them and you were now flying right next to them. Toothless and Hiccup both had their eyes wide open as Crystal flew past them with her eyes half closed and a tight smile on her face. With one wing flap Crystal gushed ahead leaving the astonished boys behind.

"Right on, Crystal!" you petted her and she crooned happily. The island was so close you could almost feel the victory, but just as Crystal was about to fly down something black rushed past you and you didn't have the time to even process what it was.

By the time Crystal landed you saw Toothless already on the ground and Hiccup hopping off of him. You bit your lip furiously in hope of containing your angry screaming, at the same time breathing in and out very loud.

"Guess we won, huh bud?" Hiccup chirped stroking Toothless under his chin, Toothless just purred and nudged his head on Hiccup's side. As you were dismounting you repeated what Hiccup said, but with a mocking tone.

"Well we won fair and square." Hiccup chuckled, you still couldn't believe he won so you stuck out your tongue at him and crossed your arms. Toothless had a victorious smile on his face and proudly walked around Crystal who glared at him.

Hiccup pressed a soft kiss on your pursed lips and as if a switch was pressed all your fake anger was gone. You pulled him into a long and passionate kiss, once you pulled away a sly smirk was plastered on Hiccup's lips and the reason behind it made you fuming mad once he spoke that one little sentence that ticked you off.

"Even with your head start you couldn't win." with one last wink he dashed away and left you standing with wide eyes.

"Why you little-" You didn't get to finish your sentence because you sprinted after him. From afar you heard his laughter and that made you throw even more swear words at him. While you chased him each other in the forest you heard the loud thuds from the dragons running behind.

After some solid five minutes you began to slow down and so did Hiccup, you could've ran for a long period and still not be tired, but since you haven't exercised in a while you lost your condition. What surprised you the most, though, was the fact that even with a peg leg Hiccup was still faster than you.

'I really need to get back in shape.' you internally thought and wiped the sweat from your forehead. Your breathing was uneven and the burning sensation on your cheeks increased.

As you ran, the trees became less and less and now you stumbled on the beach where you and Crystal get fish. Hiccup was standing near the water and breathed out while resting his hands on his knees. You took the chance and walked to the seashore, leaning a bit to wet your hands. After that you stood in front of Hiccup and sprayed him with the water.

"That's for teasing me." You chuckled and expected him to yell or something. But your expectations were wrong because Hiccup took a handful of water and splashed it in your face. He then laughed fondly and you heard the dragons gurgle as well.

"Oh my gods..." You said wiping your wet (H/C) hair away from your eyes. You opened your eyes to find Hiccup still laughing, he was holding his stomach with one hand and the other pointed at you.

"You think that's funny, huh?" You said and began walking to him, Hiccup's laugh died down when he saw the evil grin on your face.

"What are you planning to do?" He asked while walked backwards with his arms held up in a defence position. He had a slightly frighten look on his face and looked away for a moment. Which gave you plenty of time for your master plan.

"This." You simply said, before Hiccup had the time to react you pushed him in the cold water. A few drops stained your shirt after the loud splash, but that didn't matter because now you were awaiting Hiccup to get up so you could laugh at him. Hiccup stirred around, but then rose up from the water and took a deep breath. Even if you didn't won the race this seemed to be a victory as well so you cheered triumphantly.

"Why would you do that!" Hiccup exclaimed loudly making you giggle at him. His auburn hair was now darker and unlike his everyday look where it was fluffy was now wet from all the water it absorbed.

Hiccup was still in the water, swimming in place while he glared at you. But then his glare turned into a wide grin and after that you heard thrumming behind you. Before you realized what was going on you were pushed straight at the water, a loud squeal escaped from your lips because you began to loose balance.

Without having the time to take a breath you fell in the water with your mouth wide open, the second you hit the water your whole body was engulfed by the coldness which was fairly soothing. You slowly rose up and threw out the water from your mouth, leaving behind a salty essence. Hiccup saw your annoyed face and laughed loudly, you huffed and swam around.

"Good job, Toothless!" Hiccup beamed happily, you were about to retort but then you both heard Crystal running towards Toothless. And the next thing you know both of the dragons rolled together in the water, splashing you and Hiccup with water once more. Crystal swam around and arrived next to you.

"That's my girl!" You giggled and petted her head, Crystal licked you but then spat away because you were covered in salty water and that made everyone laugh. The next few minutes passed with you and Hiccup splashing each other or having a swimming competition, the dragons had already went out and were patiently watching you two play around.

"Okay that's enough fooling around for today." You said and got up from the water, your clothes were soaking wet so they were dragging you down which made walking in the water a tad bit harder. The last rays of the sun were beginning to disappear so both of you decided to go to your huts and dry up, that plan moved swiftly until Astrid walked out from the club house leaving both you and Hiccup startled.

"Hiccup, (Y/N)? Where were all day?" Astrid asked nonchalantly, her face washed with confusion once she saw your wet state. "And do I even want to know what happened to you guys?"

"Oh, we were just exploring, y'know." You replied with no trace of a lie, just for added detail you flashed her a smile and after some seconds she nodded in approval. The only way you knew that the lie convinced Astrid was because she wasn't squinting her eyes, which she did when suspecting something was wrong.

"Well I'll be going now." Hiccup said, a wide smile stretched on his face. With one last wink he walked away and left you grinning like an idiot, that is until you remembered Astrid's presence. Almost simultaneously both of you began walking opposite of the direction Hiccup took.

"Well you two have been spending an awful lot of time together." Astrid suddenly spoke and it caught you off guard.

"Yeah." You replied with a light chuckle in the end, from the corner of your eyes you saw Astrid smile a bit.

"You two are a couple, aren't you?"

"What? No!" Her question was so random and unexpected it made you stop dead in your tracks, staring at Astrid with a look of disbelief on your face. As if on cue, your cheeks began to warm and it left you internally cursing yourself for blushing.

"Come on its totally obvious, and the wink proves it." Astrid reasoned and you wanted to wipe away the smirk from her face, but after all she was right. You rolled your eyes and crossed your arms, ready to defend yourself.

"The wink means noting and we're definitely not a couple." You said, your voice filled with determination to prove her wrong, but that was not needed because the two of you were in front of Astrid's hut, she shrugged off the theme saying that she didn't really care, which you were thankful to.

A sigh of relief escaped your lips once you went inside your hut. The fireplace was lit and a smile etched on your face because Crystal remembered to light it up, you looked up and saw your dragon peacefully sleeping on the second floor. After changing into different clothes you tucked yourself in bed and let your eyelids fall, a single thought crossing your mind.

"That was close."
