STEP 2: Cutting Out Animal Products

Personally I started by cutting out everything I knew to be an animal product, but not everyone can do that and it can be very overwhelming. I chose to learn along the way because I knew I would make mistakes :

Your going to make mistakes it's how you learn, it's okay. But if you believe you will succeed better by cutting out one thing at a time than you can do that. But after educating yourself you may find this very hard as every bite you take of an animal product you will be aware of what you are contributing to. If you don't feel guilty for eating animal products after educating yourself you should probably educate yourself more because you may have blocked out some things. Not saying it's good to feel guilty, it's a bad feeling but it's a good indicator information has sunk in. (These videos are a must watch to awaken you!)

It's hard to learn about these things we have been causing our whole lives but we didn't know, it's okay, now that you do its your choice to make an informed decision.

When I first started cutting out animal products I was confused by the label 'may contain' but since then have learned it's okay to consume products labeled as such. It's just protection of big companies because if a contaminate of milk say got into the food and someone with a serve allergy ate it they could sue the company. BUT if the company puts 'may contain' then they are safe from getting sued. There is no milk in the ingredients therefore you are not paying for animal exploitation/ killing. May contain just means there could be cross contamination but machines are cleaned very well so this doesn't happen much.

Now how ever you decide to work your way to Veganism your going to crave some of the old things you used to eat. This is completely normal, you crave what you eat. Your taste buds change every 29 days, so just keep trying. You could be low in certain vitamins and minerals and your body will recognize what foods it used to get it from, remember though the vitamins and minerals you got from animal products came from the plants the animal ate to nurture it's own body (+ animals create things such as cholesterol and different forms of vitamins). So instead of eating these things you are craving figure out what vitamins and minerals they are high in. Cronometer is a very helpful tool (free online, $4-5 app) you can track what vitamins and minerals the foods you eat everyday are high in, unlike other apps it gives you information about everything; I find some apps only focus on the major things people are concerned about. Using cronometer you can see what your low in and compare it to the food your craving... Similarities in what your low in to what your craving will most likely be seen. If not... You may find the food is high in fat (more than 4g a serving) or protein. If this is the case your body is low in calories and is trying to find a dense source of calories. This means you are not eating enough; it's okay to eat high fat/protein foods (as long as they are vegan!) but for optimal health it's not a good to eat them everyday unless they are whole foods.

Don't focus too much on the metabolism part of cronometer, vegans metabolism is 16x higher than the average omnivore. Calories from carbs are our friends we need them to feel energized and happy. Our bodies cells run off of glucose (sugar). I eat 3000 calories a day 400+g from carbohydrates, (mostly from whole foods of course) after gaining back my starvation weight within the first 2 months of being vegan I haven't gained anymore weight. If you do gain weight in the beginning it's okay, your body is trying to heal itself from past abuse.

Vegan food is thought to be expensive as well but this is only the case when buying processed vegan food+ alternatives. When you buy whole foods veganism is quite cheap.

"Living on 1$ a day" is a great documentary to show that in poor regions, plant based foods such as rice, bananas and home grown vegetables are the cheapest option. Now if your able to watch this video you definitely have enough money to afford the foods they eat in the documentary. The only reason they are malnourished is because they are so poor they can't even afford to buy the cheapest food avoidable all the time. Eating the foods in the documentary can be enough to sustain ones self, as long as you get 2500-3000 calories you would be able to survive on the food but these people don't get enough calories.

Another things people tend to think is that vegan food is non existent in their area. This is not the case. If you have access to animal products in your area, there is plants somewhere. What do you think the animals you have been eating eat?
