Education: Whaling

Some of the most majestic sea life killed are whales, dolphins and sharks. Most people are familiar with the slaughter of sharks for shark fin soup.

People get very angry that the bodies of the Sharks are thrown back into the water, that they were only killed for their fins.

Whales and dolphins are very commonly killed in the same culture. Dolphin meat is commonly mislabeled as whale meat because its undesirable for most to eat dolphin but not whale.

Big ships are commonly used for whaling today, they claim killing these whales is for research but where's the research at? They should be leading in whale research with the number of whales their killing each day.

Faroe Islands is a common place annually where people of the community spend days slaughtering pilot whales. The whales are driven into the bay where they are trapped for the drive hunt/ grind. People in shore then use knives to hack away at the whales/dolphins and break their spinal cords. There is a lot of blood, the water turns scarlet and you know what has been done.

Founder of sea Shepard Paul Watson is in the front lines trying to stop this annual slaughter. Sea Shepard is know to crash into whaling ships to end their murder spree. Paul has declared himself that they won't stop until it ends.

Pamela Anderson, the blonde Bay Watch babe is also apart of sea shepherd and with her media presence raises awareness about whaling and more.

~ THANK YOU ALL OF SEA SHEPHERD! ~

The Faroese and the Danes like to compare the killing of dolphins to the killing of pigs. The meat is after all boiled, broiled as a steak, or air-dried. Each year nearly 900 pilot whales are killed and 100 dolphins only in the Faroe Islands Annually.

In Taiji, Japan Annually approximately 23,000 dolphins are killed. THE COVE is a great documentary exposing the slaughter of dolphins.

The most upsetting part is pilot whales may or may not be endangered as there is not enough information about them yet.

Aside from ethics of killing a whale/dolphin or any animal when they don't need to be killed> the slaughter has a very BIG devastating impact on the planet. 'Seaspiracy' is an amazing short film available on YouTube showing just how important oceanic animals are to the health of the planet.

There is also no need nutritionally to eat whale/ dolphin meat. Sure they are high in fat, protein, B12 and iron according to a quick Wikipedia search but we can get all those nutrients from plants; just like any other animal product. Dolphin and whale meat is also VERY high in Mercury. I already talked about the health consequences of eating Mercury/fish in the last chapter about fish; go check that out if you missed it.
