chapter 20 | movie night

"HELLO, MY BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE!" OLIVIA EXCLAIMED, entering the Alvarez apartment with a cup of coffee in her hands.

"Somebody is a happy girl today." Penelope smirked at the redhead. "Actually, I drank like 5 coffees this morning so that's why I'm like really hyped right now. I think I might be addicted to coffee now." She shrugged.

"Uh, uh, uh. I can't have you drinking this much coffee in the morning, your mother will kill you." Penelope said, taking the coffee away from the girl causing her to groan.

"I need money." Alex said blankly causing the redhead to snort. "Wow. Nice one dude."

"I know." He winked at her which made her roll her eyes at him, resting on the couch.

"And I need a Margarita but it's 7 in the morning." Penelope joked.

"And I need my coffee!" Olivia whined.

"Mom, please. I'm going to the movies." Alex pleaded making the older woman sigh, as she rumbled into her purse for some money. "Hey, is Livi going to the movies with you?" She asked.

"Yes-"

"No! I am not!"

"Oh come on Livi! You said you would go!" Alex argued and she scoffed.

"Yeah, there's no way in hell I'm going knowing that Finn is going to be there." She said, recalling the day when Alex, livi and his friends were hanging out and Finn was constantly following her and trying to flirt and talk to her.

"Here, ten dollars." Penelope said, handing Alex a ten-dollar note.

"Oh, maybe I wasn't clear. I'm actually going to a movie in this century. It's in colour and everything! A ticket costs $9.50."

"And I expect change." Penelope said causing the boy to groan.

"No, I feel your pain. I never had enough money to go to the movies with friends." Elena said.

"Or enough friends to go to the movies with friends." Alex smirked, proud of his comment and the redhead snorted once again. "Wow, Alex. You're so bad now." She said sarcastically and Alex looked at her with a glare.

"Okay, I know you drank coffee but you're acting as if you just drank vodka and now you're acting all drunk." Alex scoffed and she rolled her eyes, plopping back onto the couch.

"Oh I know, why don't you pluck your one mustache hair, and you can get the kid price?" Elena smile teasingly.

"Why don't you pluck your 20 mustache hairs?" Alex shot back.

"Ugh! Are you guys seriously going to keep on arguing for the rest of the day?! Your voices are annoying me!" Olivia groaned.

"Jokes on you, because each one of these hairs is a blow to the patriarchy." Elena smirked, ignoring the redhead. "Oh, you win." Alex said sarcastically, rolling his eyes.

"Come on, mom. All of my friends get way more cash from their parents." Alex whined.

"What have I told you about comparing yourself to other people?"

"To always do it and make sure I'm better." Alex smirked. "No thats your Abuelita.. look my uh, clinical hours got all squirrelly. So I'm gonna take you and Livi to the movies and show you how to have fun on a budget." Penelope said.

Olivia shot up from the couch, looking over the two, "yes!"

"What? No! Livi how come you can go with my mom but not me?" Alex huffed. "Well, your mom is way better than your friends sooo..." the redhead smirked and Penelope gave her a high five.

"See? It'll be great. It'll be like a date with your mom." Penelope joked, pulling Alex in for a hug. He groaned and tried to get out of her grip.

Olivia laughed loudly as she took out her phone and started recording the moment, trying to contain her laughter. "And I got that on video." She smirked causing the boy to glare at her, making her put her hands in surrender, chuckling.

Lydia suddenly came in the apartment, groaning at the sight of her hand. Everyone just stared at her, with no expression on their faces. "Well don't make such a big deal if it. I'm fine." Lydia said sarcastically, making her way over to the couch.

"What happened?"

"She tripped on the sideways in front of the building and hurt her arm." Schneider explained.

"I had to break my fall. Some people's faces are worth protecting. Papito and pelliroja knows what I'm talking about." Lydia said gesturing towards the two teens as they smirked at each other.

"Abuelita, how did you trip?" Elena asked. "That stupid sidewalk was broken. The roots of the tree pushed it up." Lydia explained.

"Man, Mother Nature is turning on us. And after we treated her so well." Schneider sighed.

"I know right!" Olivia nodded along with Schneider, scoffing as she shook her head whilst everyone rolled their eyes at the two.

♡︎

Olivia, Alex and Penelope walked into the theatre, looking for their seats. Olivia had bought herself a bucket of popcorn and a coke. Even though she knew Penelope brought some snacks from home, she still decided to buy some for herself since she didn't want to get kicked out of the theatre.

"Oo, okay. Let's find four seats. One for me, one for you, one for Livi and one for the bag of money we're going to save." Penelope smirked, elbowing Alex in the stomach causing him to groan slightly.

Before they were about to sit at a row that was empty, Alex stopped them, pulling them back by their hands. "Oh god, those kids are from school."

"You wanna sit with them?" Penelope suggested but got pulled back. "No,no, no, let's just stay here." Alex said a little too loudly causing the group of teens to turn and look at them.

"Hey, guys." Alex fake smiled, waving, but quickly put his hand down as he realised he was holding Penelope's hand, embarrassed while they laughed.

The redhead went over to another free row of seats. She noticed the kids from school were still staring, "you guys got a problem?" She scowled, which made them turn their heads away and back to the movie making the redhead roll her eyes at them before sitting down with Alex and Penelope following behind.

"That was badass Livi!" Penelope smirked, fist bumping the redhead.

"Great, first I have no money, now I have no dignity." Alex sighed as he sat down.

"Maybe, but what you do have is..what??" Penelope pulled out two boxes of candy which made Olivia smirked in delight. "Amazing!" She scoffed in amusement.

"Where'd this come from? My pockets." Penelope said, dumping them on Alex's lap. Olivia reached over, stealing a box of them.

"Is that why you're wearing cargo pants?"

"First of all, they were very stylish in the 90s. Second, it is the key to sneaking food past any by-the-book users who might narc on you." Penelope explained before pulling out liquorice from her pants.

"Dude! Im gonna go with you to the movies everyday!" Olivia chuckled, fist bumping Penelope as she stole some of the liquorice from Alex causing him to raise his brows at her.

"Where'd you get these? The 99-cents store?" Alex scoffed.

"The 98-cents store." Penelope corrected. "Yeah, your Mami ain't no chump. See, we may not be spending a lot of money, but it's lit, right?"

"Shoot, 5-0!" Olivia exclaimed, pushing the liquorice out of Alex's hand and hers.

The security went past the three as he looked at them with a flashlight, but they acted like they were looking at the movie. Olivia tried her best to hold in her laugh at the expression on Penelope's face.

"Dust it off, five second rule." Penelope waved with her hand. Olivia picked up her liquorice from the floor and dusted them before eating it. Alex looked at her, disgusted.

"What? It's the five second rule. " She shrugged.

♡︎

While the three of them were watching the movie, Alex leaned over Olivia's shoulder, looking up at her. She turned her head, looking at him with raised eyebrows, "Yes?"

"Can I have some popcorn?" He asked, smiling widely. "No, it's mine. Now back off." The redhead scoffed, turning her attention back on the screen.

"Pleaseeeee." He pouted jokingly making the redhead roll her eyes and sigh before taking a huge handful of popcorn in her hand and shoving it into the boy's mouth.

"Thanks." He mumbled, his mouth filled with popcorn. Olivia laughed at him, shaking her head before turning her attention on the movie once again.

"See, pretty great right? Nothing keeps popcorn fresher than a shower cap you snagged from a hotel room." Penelope said as she pulled out popcorn that was literally in a shower cap.

"More popcorn? Sweet!" Before Olivia could grab some popcorn from the shower cap, Penelope pulled it away from her. "Uh-uh, nope. You already have your own popcorn."

"But Alex finished it all!" She whined, pouting. Penelope sighed before letting the redhead take some popcorn causing her to smirk.

"Wait, but aren't we breaking the law or something? I don't want to end up in jail." Alex asked. "If the other prisoners ask me what I'm in for and I say 'gummy bears', I don't see that ending well."

"There is no law against outside food. There's a rule, but that's totally different." Penelope said.

"Wait, so it's okay to break the law?" The redhead asked, confused.

" absolutely not. Unless the rules nuts. Speaking of nuts..." Penelope suddenly pulled out a pack of Goobers from inside her shirt making Olivia raise her brows confusingly.

"They're so..warm." Alex cringed in disgust. "You're welcome. And we saved eight dollars. You know how much a box of goobers costs to make? A penny" Penelope said.

"You really know that or-"

"A penny! I scored these at a gas station on Pico. Mislabeled at 49 cents. I bought every box. We're gonna be serving Goobers and yours and Livi's wedding." Penelope chuckled, whispering the last part so that Livi couldn't hear as she was too busy watching the movie.

"I'm good with that." Alex smirked. "You have any soda in your pants?"

"No."

"Aw."

"Ba-bam!" Penelope opened her jacket, revealing Soda cans as the two teens scoff in amazement before taking one for themselves and was about to open it but was stopped by Penelope.

"No, no, no. The usher will hear you. You have to wait for the explosion." She said. Once the explosion came on they all opened the can in unison.

The usher suddenly came back and they acted as if they were interested in the movie again. Once Usher was gone, they clicked their drinks, and smirked before turning their attention back to the movie.

♡︎

Olivia was in the Alvarez apartment, playing a video game with Schneider. He practically forced her to play with him since nobody else wanted to. It took a while for her to agree but she gladly did after almost an hour of Schneider begging her to play with him.

"And this girl wins again!" Olivia cheered, realising she won again causing Schneider to groan in annoyance. "Man, you are good!" He huffed which made the girl smirk in confidence.

"I am so sorry, everybody but I'm having trouble walking and I cannot vote today." Lydia said, catching the attention of the redhead and everyone else. "Oh well, maybe next time."

"Come on, Abuelita. I was so looking forward to taking you to vote." Elena whined. "I know. And I'm so disappointed to miss it." Lydia cried out.

"You don't have to. I have a wheelchair up in my apartment." Schneider suggested and everyone stared at him weirdly. " I was Stephen hawking for Halloween!"

"Makes sense." Olivia shrugged.

"This is perfect, Abuelita, we can stop to get Schneider's insensitive wheelchair, which I have a lot to say about just not now, and then we can head to the polls, let's go!" Elena said excitedly.

Everyone got out of the apartment, ready to go but then Lydia locked them out making them frown in confusion. "What the hell is she doing? Why is she locking us out?" Penelope huffed. "Schneider I need your key to the apartment."

Schneider quickly took out his key from his pocket, passing it over to Penelope.

"Thanks, I've been trying to get this away from your for two years." Penelope smirked in victory as she huffed, taking out her own keys from her pockets.

"nice try. These are all your apartment. And Livi's." Schneider smirked. They gave him a weird look.

"Wait, why do you have keys to my apartment?? You know you can literally just come in anytime." Livi knitted her brows.

"Because your dad doesn't want me in your apartment anymore! What a great best friend he is, isn't he?" The man scoffed.

"What? Why?"

Schneider chuckled nervously, scratching his head. "Well uh, I may or may not have set your toaster on fire a few weeks ago which result to almost burning your apartment down." Schneider explained, smiling nervously.

"What?! You did that?! My parents thought I was the one that did that and they grounded me for like a week!" The redhead scoffed, crossing her arms against her chest.

Alex sighed, putting a hand on his best friend's shoulder. "Sorry dude." He said before walking into the Alvarez apartment along with Penelope and Elena.

"Must've been hard." Schneider sighed, patting Olivia's shoulder like what Alex did and walked into the apartment with the redhead scowling behind him.

Everyone were yelling out Lydia's name, hoping to get a response from the older woman.

"She's probably in the kitchen." Olivia suggested. Making their way into the kitchen, Schneider opened a cupboard beside him, revealing many packs of goobers.

"Woah." The redhead said in awe. "Now I know where to get candy." She chuckled.

"Don't even think about it!" Penelope exclaimed to the girl, closing the cupboard making the redhead raise her hands up in surrender.

Olivia looked over the window and her eyes widened at the sight of Lydia going down the fire escape of the stairs. "Is that...Abuelita?" She said. Everyone followed behind the redhead as they made their way to the window.

"Mami?"

"My leg is feeling better." Lydia smiled nervously.

♡︎

Lydia came out of window with the help of Alex and Olivia. They helped her make her way on the couch while Penelope got a glass of water for her.

"Mami, what's going on? Why are you acting like such a loca?" Penelope said, sitting beside her mother.

"Are you afraid to vote? I mean, is it because I'm Cuba, any act of political expression was met with violent repercussions?" Elena suggested.

"Yeah, sure. Make that the reason." Lydia nodded. Elena rolled her eyes while Olivia laughed but quickly hid it knowing it wasn't the best time to laugh right now.

Lydia sighed before speaking, "I don't vote because, I'm not a citizen."

"What?"

"Yes, you are. You and papi had your Citizen ship interviews while I was deployed in Afghanistan." Penelope assured.

"No we were suppose to, but we never did. We ended up spending the whole afternoon in the park together, bird-watching which of course is what we call lovemaking." Lydia said and everyone cringed in disgust.

"Maybe we should go 'bird watching' after this." Alex whispered in the redhead's ear, a smirk pulled up on his face causing her to roll her eyes and nudge him in the stomach.

"Which is ironic because the birds were watching us." Lydia continued making the teens laugh.

"Stop trying to change the subject. Especially to that subject." Penelope cringed making Livi nod. "How did you never become a citizen?"

"I was busy you know! I was working, raising a family, helping my family to raise their family! Oh, you're welcome. But anyways, it doesn't matter because I have a green card. I get social security, I pay taxes." Lydia argued.

"Whoa. You have to pay taxes with a green card?" Schneider gasped before groaning and taking out his phone.

"I am a permanent resident. So it's almost the same thing. It's no big deal!" Lydia huffed.

"This actually makes me so much happier, Abuelita. I'm understand. It's not that you don't want to vote, you can't." Elena said in relief.

"Yeah, of course!"

"Then this is great. Because green card holders can become citizens easily. You just have to take a couple tests. I'll download the forms, and we'll get you in line to become a citizen!" Elena suggested, confidently.

"No, thank you!" Lydia exclaimed, running back to her room.

"She is so infuriating!" Elena groaned.

"Come on Livi, let's go to my room." Alex said, not wanting to get into the conversation Penelope and Elena were in . Olivia nodded, making her way behind him to his room.

She closed the door behind her, seeing Alex laying on his back on the bed, facing the ceiling with a small sigh escaping his lips. Olivia went over, laying next to him on her back and looking up the ceiling like what he was doing.

She turned her head at him, noticing his expression, "are you okay?" She mumbled.

"I don't know. I'm just shock Abuelita didn't told us she was a citizen. I'm kinda worried about her." He sighed, turning to face the redhead.

"Hey, it's okay. I'm sure she'll be fine. We just have to get her to become a citizen and vote for the election. And I'm sure Elena would help too." Olivia reassured and he nodded, letting out a small sigh.

They stared at each other, not really saying anything. You might think it was awkward but it wasn't. It was comfortable. A comfortable silence with them admiring each others features and smiling at each other now and then, not really talking at all.

"is this what we're going to do all day? Staring at each other and guessing which one of us is prettier?" Olivia raise her brows causing Alex to chuckle before getting up into a sitting position.

"you're right. we could watch a movie, or..do you want to go 'bird watching'?" Alex smirked teasingly. Olivia mouth gaped slightly. She took a pillow before hitting him continuously making him laugh out loud. It soon turned into a pillow fight between the two with their laughter around the room.

♡︎

The next day, Olivia was in her apartment, setting up popcorn and some drinks. She invited Charlotte over to hang out and watch a movie while waiting for Alex and Penelope to come back from the cinema.

Alex wanted her to come but she suggested to stay home since she felt like it was unfair to him and Penelope for always always following them wherever they go and not giving them any daughter and son time so she decided to stay home and let them have their fun.

The doorbell rang and Olivia went over to open the door, revealing Charlotte with her hand holding a basket of many different snacks.

"Hey, Char! Come on in." The redhead beamed with smile on her face, hugging her best friend in the process as she let her into the apartment.

"Hey, Liv." Charlotte giggled as she hugged her back, placing the basket of snacks on the table before turning to look around the apartment.

"I haven't been here for ages! Your apartment is way bigger than mine. Finally we get to hang out again. Alex had been stealing my poor best friend away from me. " Charlotte pouted which made Livi crack a smile on her face.

The two sat on the big white couch that was facing the tv. Olivia reached over to the table, grabbing the remote before turning on the tv.

"So, what movie do you wanna watch?" She asked, her eyes still on the tv as she searched for movies on her Netflix.

"Hm, I was thinking we should watch a horror movie." Charlotte suggested. The redhead nodded before turning on a random horror film. Charlotte grabbed the bowl of popcorn, placing it in between Livi and her as the movie started.

♡︎

Half way through the movie, the two teens had been screaming their lungs out because of the jump scares and the scary filming in the movie. Popcorn were all over the floor and on them since they kept flinching every now and then and screaming every time a jumpscare came on.

"I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight." Charlotte mumbled.

The doorbell suddenly rang which made them jump slightly. They both looked at each other, scared expressions on their faces, thinking it's probably a serial killer.

"M-maybe it's just your parents?" Charlotte said. "It's not. My parents doesn't come back til midnight. And it's definitely not Alex because he's still at the movies." Olivia explained, gulping.

"Okay. Why not you go answer the door and I'll stay behind you. Just for protection." Charlotte suggested.

"Seriously?! Why can't you go answer the door?" Olivia scoffed. "Well, it's your house missy!" Charlotte scolded making the redhead slightly roll her eyes.

"Okay fine! But first.." Olivia took a pillow from the couch and a nerf gun that was found on the floor which was definitely Lucas' but at that point she didn't care since she was too scared and paranoid that a serial killer could be at her doorstep right now. She knew it was a bad idea to be watching scary movies especially at night and look at her now, being all scared.

She made her way over to the main door, creeping up to it slowly with Charlotte behind her, holding a random bat she somehow found that Olivia did not remembered having that in her own house but she was too paranoid to be thinking about that now.

She placed her hand on the doorknob, twisting it slowly as she opened the door. There was no one standing there which made the two girls sigh in relief.

"Oh, thank god. There's no one here." Charlotte sighed.

"Boo!" Alex shouted, appearing from the side. The two girls screamed as they started hitting Alex. Olivia was continuously hitting Alex with her pillow whilst Charlotte ran into Olivia's room, scared.

"Stop, stop! It's just me! It's Alex!" Alex exclaimed. She abruptly stopped hitting the poor boy, opening her eyes and seeing the brown haired boy on the floor curled up into a ball with his hands covering his face.

"Alex? You ass! You scared the crap out of me dude!" Olivia huffed, placing her hands on her chest as she let out a sigh of relief, thankful it wasn't some type of serial killer or anything.

She lend Alex a hand, helping him up from the ground. "Char! You can come out now! It's just Alex." Olivia shouted. Charlotte came out of Livi's room letting out a sigh of relief once she realise it was just Alex.

"Oh goodness. Thank god. We were so scared we just had to defend ourselves." She chuckled but quickly stopped once she saw the redhead giving her a death stare.

"You didn't even help!" Olivia rolled her eyes. "I mean at least it wasn't a serial killer right?" Charlotte smiled awkwardly.

"You're right. It was kinda funny tho." Olivia chuckled and everyone laughed. "Yeah it was! You guys seriously think that a serial killer would show up on your doorstep?" Alex scoffed and they nodded with a chuckle.

"Well yeah! I mean it could happen." Charlotte protested causing the two to laugh. "Anyways I'm gonna go now. I'll see you guys in school. Bye!" Charlotte waved a goodbye to them which made them do the same.

"Cargo pants huh?" Olivia raised her brows, laughing at the pants that Alex was wearing. It looked a little big but she had to admit, he looked cute. Alex rolled his eyes jokingly at her.

"Man, that was hilarious. But I think I might need to ice my back now." Alex joked. "I'm sorry for hitting you.I got scared. I knew I shouldn't have watched a scary movie at night." The redhead chuckled. "Anyways why you're here? I thought you were at the movies?"

"Well, we got caught eating outside food and now we're kicked out from the movies. But it's okay I could use a disguise so they won't recognise me." Alex smirked jokingly which made the redhead laugh and shook her head.

"Yeah, but not with that hair. Dude it's a mess! Here, let me help." Olivia brushed his hair with her fingers, soothing it out. Alex stared at her, admiring her eyes and how her face was concentrated on fixing his hair.

"And...done! You look good, papito." Olivia teased and he cringed. "Ugh! It's so weird hearing you say it." He laughed making her gasp dramatically. "How dare you?! I sound good saying it." She rolled her eyes jokingly and he chuckled slightly.

"Oh by the way, Abuelita is thinking about being a citizen." Alex said. "Really?! That's great. I'm happy for her." Olivia smiled widely.

There was a moment of silence until Olivia started yawning. "Tired, huh?" Alex raised his brows and she nodded. "Come on let's get you to bed."

When they entered Olivia's room, she went on her bed, getting under the covers. Alex went over and tucked her in, kissing her forehead. Before he was about to leave, Olivia grabbed his arm, making him turn towards her.

"Um... can you stay here with me for a bit? I'm still scared from the movie.." she blushed, embarrassed. Alex laughed and shook his head, "sure, livi."

He got under the covers beside her, wrapping his arms around her waist. "Hey, livi-" he looked over seeing the redhead fast asleep, light snores escaping her lips making Alex chuckle slightly and kiss her on the forehead.

The two stayed in that position with Alex's arms wrapped around her waist whilst she was sleeping and Olivia head rested in the crook of his neck whilst he watched her sleeping with a smile on his face.
