Break Out

This is such a bad idea.

Running my hands through my hair, I take a deep breath.

There are so many ways in which it could go wrong. With her powers, we might not be able to get to her in time. And there's no telling what would happen if we don't. How Dawn might try to change us to fit whatever she thinks is wrong. Who would I even be with the way she thinks about us now? She's so angry at me, and Faith and so many other people. Maybe she'd want to punish us for all the ways she feels like we hurt her?

I look over at Faith who looks about as happy as I do that Willow is in there talking to Dawn.

What would she do to Faith given how angry she is with her? Would she even exist in this new thing that Dawn would create? Would she erase her and their relationship? Maybe she would change it somehow? She could make it so they're back together, or never broke up in the first place. Or maybe she would make it so Dawn broke up with her and Faith is the one who is pining after her. Just to torture her?

Would I even exist? What if she wants to be an only child? She could bring Mom back but erase me all together. I might not even get the chance to talk to Faith before it all ends. To figure out exactly how things have changed between us. But now is not the time for a conversation like that. I have to be focused on what's about to happen. There's no room for error once it all begins. The only question is, when will it actually start?

Like it was on cue or something, the door opens and Willow makes her way out. Faith is quick to react as the door closes.

"Did you do it?"

It takes Willow a second to answer.

"I did, I just hope that it was convincing. She went pretty hard at me and I did my best to play along. Hopefully it all works."

Xander asks what most of us are wondering.

"What now? Do we wait things out?"

I take a deep breath.

"I'm guessing it's not going to take Dawn long to..."

Again like clockwork, alarms start to go off around us. Willow looks around.

"Looks like the warning system I put in is working."

If it's going off, she's probably done something to escape, which means...

I run towards the door to her cell, opening it as I do and go inside. The gloves and chains are on the ground with no Dawn in sight.

What did she do? Is it like what she did in the hospital?

Faith, Connor and Willow come in with Xander and Kennedy staying by the door while looking in. Xander has to ask.

"What happened to her?"

Connor goes over to the chains and gloves, picking them up.

"There's blood on these."

I guess we know what happened.

Faith says what I was thinking.

"Probably not a mystery what happened then."

"Will?"

Willow moves in near Connor as he steps back to let her work. She waves her hand as she says the magic words.

"Reveley..."

The room starts to go a little weird and a crack appears in the wall nearest to where Dawn was chained. Eventually the crack disappears. I turn to Faith.

"She's gone."

Xander speaks up.

"Unless she's invisible."

We all look at Xander.

"What? It's not like it hasn't happened before. She could do it to herself."

Connor looks around and I know that he's focusing his senses. Glancing at Faith and Kennedy, they do the same. I take a deep breath and do my best to listen for anything.

It doesn't sound like there's a presence in the room we're not seeing. And I can't feel anything either, except for the other people in the room. She's definitely not here.

Letting out the breath, I turn to Xander.

"She's not here. I don't sense anything."

Kennedy, Connor and Faith confirm my feeling.

"B's right."

"I agree."

"Yup."

She's definitely gone somewhere. The question is where.

We make our way out of the room and back to where Giles and Angel are talking.

I'm guessing they have some ideas.

"What's the what guys?"

My watcher and my ex turn to the rest of us as we get out, focusing on me.

"We were just discussing where Dawn might have gone."

Faith asks before I can.

"And?"

Angel explains.

"She has a lot of power, I've seen a lot of people like that at Wolfram and Hart, but they're never as powerful as they talk."

Giles adds to it.

"It is most likely that she would require some type of amplifier for her abilities to accomplish what she claims. A force greater than herself to spread her power well enough to achieve what she wishes."

Willow clues in.

"The hellmouth."

Oh crap.

Willow keeps explaining.

"It's an inter-dimensional gateway, and her powers would be the perfect catalyst for an energy release. It could even be why the hellmouth was acting up. Maybe Dawn's powers manifesting affected the hellmouth and caused a problem."

Faith and I look at each other and I know she's thinking the same thing. She gets to it first though.

"Do you think that could explain... you know, the other thing?"

She doesn't want to have everyone know. I get that.

Willow quickly figures it out though.

"Could be. The inter-dimensional energy fluctuations could've opened a door."

Xander can't help but ask.

"The other thing?"

Okay, gotta focus.

"It's not important right now. What we need is to get to the hellmouth as quickly as we can. Hopefully we'll have enough time to stop her."

And save her from herself if we can.
