Ch. 30 Priceless

                Chapter 30

Tears, more tears, they fell from his deep eyes trailing down his smooth pale cheek. It may have just been me. I was struck with shock and felt as if a rock was shoved down my throat. It was so hard to breath. How would you not need to feel the need to cry when a child is sobbing about where there mommy and daddy is at? Will anyone be able to tell him that they’re dead? I don’t want my parents to be dead either. I want them to be alive. I wanted to see them again because I haven’t seen them much as I grew up.

Lucien was holding Essex and also looked torn but in a different way. His face was dead pale and his eyes were lifeless. My sister on the other hand, just remained calm but was holding onto something.

“Where are they...!?” Essex cried “Mommy....” I blinked a few tears away as Essex caught me being here.

“Nobody told him?” I raised my head to the many people in the single room. Most of them I didn’t know.

“Lex-is!” He called and sniffed “Do you know where they are?” The heavy air in the room was probably making it worse for Essex. All eyes had moved to me with caution. Essex was lowered down and he hiccupped to come in front of me. Why lie? Why make things sound better than they are?

“Essex,” I croaked. I knew what every single one of them were planning to do. They will keep telling him lies about the situation until they run out of them. Sugar coating things won’t solve any problems.

“They’re dead,” I calmly explained. Eyes in the room popped as Demon’s jaw dropped. Essex all the sudden became silent. He doubly blinked at me.

“What’s dead?” He asked.

“Dead is when you can’t see them anymore. They can’t talk back to you. They can’t be physically there, but if you want to talk to them, wherever you are, they will listen. They’re inside of you, apart of you,” I carefully spoke and tried not to let my voice fall to pieces. A woman took a step in front with a wide opened mouth to protest.

“Can I give the parts back to mommy and daddy to see them?” He sniffed. I nodded no and tears strolled down his cheek but still stood quieter than before. I pulled him into a hug and felt the insides of me fall apart. Please... Don’t let them die before I find them.

“Can you be my mommy?” Essex asked. Ha-ha, this kid is even funny when people are dead.

“No, I can’t,” I shrugged. Essex continued to cry. Eventually we had to leave, and walk out of the room and into the hallway. I stayed silent within my thoughts. Essex was going to be taken care by Lucien and my sister. Both, I don’t trust. Too many suspicious things are happening. Sure, Lucien’s family is rich and all...but who was the real target? Apparently, Demon’s father, Demon, Lucien and Daphne was supposed to be there for that day ‘serial killers’ came breaking into the castle. Demon’s mother says Demon is also in danger. Not to mention there are other things are going on... My life is becoming a tragedy after another.

“Psycho, you give them a bad impression,” Demon gently pushes me over the shoulder. I roll my eyes “I don’t care.”

“You should... What is Damon’s girlfriend telling Essex that his parents are dead when she doesn’t have any connection to them?” He arched an eyebrow. I didn’t know he cared so much of status and reputation.

“I don’t care what they think,” I snarled “They were going to feed him lies until they run out of them! I know more than anyone at this point to know how it feels to not know the answer the big question that can change everything. It’s more torturing to keep wandering in the dark, searching for something that may or may not exist anymore. Because at least if I knew they were dead, I could get a closure.” My jaw clenched and I stormed more deeper down the hallway. He firmly grabbed hold of my wrist but I shrugged it off. My eyes were burning as hot as the flames from hell.

“We’ll find them,” Damon whispers, quickly matching up to my foot steps “I’ll even find a way to pay the kidnappers that much money.” I scoffed and opened the door that lead to outside. It was starting to becom dark.

“Lexis, I’m serious,” he strictly said.

“I don’t want it,” I muttered.

“What...?” He yelled out and moved a step ahead of me, blocking my path.

“Come on, don’t tell me you actually think they’ll let my parents go just because I gave them money? If I do that, they’ll have more reason to kill them even if they’re not dead. Think a little!”

“Why would it matter if they keep them alive if they get the money?” He asked stupefied.

“Many reasons... I’m an eye witness and so are they, I get caught by the FBI or something, then they’ll get caught because there is no promise that I won’t tattle on them,”

“So you’re in danger too...”

“Yup... There are other reasons, if I give them the money and they let me parents go free. They’ll suspect we’ll come back for the money or take revenge someway. That’s why they’d rather kill us the second they get the money instead of us letting us go off with their fate in our hands. Haven’t you watched the movies?”

“And that’s why you decided to hire an assassin,”

“Yup...! It’s better to fight back than to give what they want.”

“Then why are you still with me if you don’t need the money anymore?”

“I need somebody to pay for the assassin, don’t I?”

“Yea, but I already paid for it,”

“I don’t know Damon, maybe I like you,” I freely smiled and walked around him, heading toward down the street. He matched up with me and chuckled at my reply. We walked down the block until we met his car.

“I think you’re hanging around me too much,” He opened his car front door and walked right in. I opened the door myself and took the passenger seat and slouched. I felt incredibly safe in this car, mostly because it was bullet proof. He started the car and then charmingly smirked as he leaned into me.

“Psycho, I can’t believe I’m saying this,” he began. La, la, la, la, la, I’m not going to listen to this, la, la, la, la... This can’t happen again! Then why can’t I help but smile confidently?

“but I want you to break up with me,” He ended. Huh!? Player say what!? Demon tell the psycho to do what!? Why!? My eyes popped wide open as he hit the gas and moved into the road. I felt my jaw drop at the words.

“You want to break up!?” I yelped. He continued to laugh and go further down the street. This was not the time to tell me to break up! I’ve already been through one! I don’t need another one!

“Why...?” He hits the break on the red light and turns his head to interest “Don’t you want that?” Wait a minute...!

“We’re not even really going out... I can’t actually break up with you,” I dryly claimed. Oh thank goodness...

“Publically we can,” He reminded.

“Uh... No we can’t... I  need to keep watch of you.”

“For what...?”

“For other girls,”

“I only have one girl I need to look at,” His smirked widened. Oh great... He’s going to get married and I’ll be the one sleeping on his sofa. Actually, his sofa is pretty big and really expensive. Eh, why the hell not? I’ll marry the sofa.

“Who?” It accidently came out harsh.

“You,” He smiles radiantly. I doubly blink and turned my head to the yellow light that was switching to green. Ha-ha, he’s so funny. I know better than to believe that lie. If Nathan couldn’t keep his eyes off other girls while sincerely dating Karen, then Demon won’t be able to do it either.

“You, my ass,” I snickered.

“Psycho, I’m being serious. Break up with me,” He demanded.

“Okay, Damon, I break up with you,”

“Publicly break up with me,”

“I publicly break up with you,”

“Now that’s done, be my girlfriend but for real,” He sped down the road. We have a lot of comedians today, don’t we? He made a quick turn into an empty road with a large lake at the side. A memory struck me and reminded me of where this place was. That time when we went to the beach. That time when he first kiss me... Where the lie about how we met was set. Ah, I see what he’s doing. He slams the break and snaps his head at me.

“I’m not moving until you accept,” he conditions.

                “Why here...?” I dryly asked.

“This place is my lucky charm,”

“This road doesn’t belong to you,”

“I bought it yesterday. It’s legally my road,” He pulls out some paper that I wouldn’t bother to actually read. He actually bought the road... Rich boy has lost his mind.

“Ah, you thought because you bought a road for me, I’d accept!” I laughed out and began to get myself comfortable In the seat. I lowered the seat, and used it as a bed.

“Actually,” He lowered his seat himself and watched me from the corner of his eyes. He pressed a bottom from the car and the roof opened up. I looked up into the night sky and already could see the stars twinkling. Because there wasn’t much lights around us, we could easily see the stars.

“You thought I’d accept if you showed me the stars?” I scoffed. Demon quietly laughed and rolled his eyes “You didn’t let me finish. First...” He crowded against me to acquire my view of the stars. He gently raised my wrist and forced me to point my finger on a star.

“You bought me a star? You thought I’d accept if you did that?” I swallowed a laugh. He released his hold and laid back down his seat, gazing into the star in memory. This may be the first time I thought the demon had a way deeper conscious than I thought he would.

“It’s not your star... I bought it for my dead ex-girlfriend a long time ago,” he sighed. I stared at the sky stupefied. Then why the road, why open the roof, why point out a star? I’m so confused.

“Demon, get to the point!” I yelled out.

“I bought the road to keep us together,” He rolled his eyes and turned his head to me instead of gazing into the star of his dead girlfriend “I can buy you the whole world Lexis,” The heat flooded to my cheeks, deepening into a sharp red.

“Even that isn’t enough to buy you. You can’t buy something that doesn’t have a price–” I don’t know how he did it but he did. The moment I heard the second verse, he had me around his stupid demon claw. I leaned forward and gave a sweet quick kiss and leaned back into my seat.

                “You win,” I declare.

“Not yet,” He smirks and leans more into my seat, and gives a long passionate kiss. Every mistake we’ve made with each other suddenly became un done. I don’t want to this end...but everything has to come to an end doesn’t it? How far will we fall before we get up? Something tells me this isn’t the fall... My instincts told me that things aren’t right. The things that have been going around my life is only the foundation which leads into a bad climax. What will happen not to only us, but to everyone else? My parents, sister, Essex, his mom, him, the slaughters... This isn’t the end.

I felt demon moving over to my collar bone and touching an area I didn’t like to be touched when we were out in the middle of the street!

“Demon, off,” I sang and he actually did keep his space, but still stood on top of me.

                “Yea...?”

“We have to go, your mom, hospital,”

“That’s right,” He snickers and moved back into his seat and started the engine. We exchanged small smiles before we both pulled up the seats and got ready to leave the road and head to the hospital his mom was at. The roof was pulled up and we entered a comfortable silence where neither of us wanted to talk verbally. He drove the way to the hospital and we both got out of the car, somehow still end up insulting each other on the way walking up to the hospital room. We were forced to use the stairs and finally got up to the floor and room of the mothers.

Demon slammed into the room without the thought to knock or bother checking if there was a lock. If there was a lock, he broke it.

“I guess even a demon misses his mommy,” I shrugged and he narrowed his eyes at me but didn’t dare to deny it. The room was quite huge and designed well. Except, there was a one huge thing that was missing. The king sized bed was missing something. Demon sharply looked around the room. He walked around the room and I felt my heart leap out of my heart.

“Maybe we went in the wrong room?” I quietly suggest. Demon moved around the room in horror and looked at me with torn eyes. The world always gets even. When one great good thing happens, something just as terrible happens as well.

“No,” He claimed “This is the right room.”

“I’ll go check,” I turned around and grabbed for the door handle.

“Psycho, this isn’t the wrong room,”

                “Maybe she checked out?”

“Yea... Maybe,” He heavily breathed out. Gees, he’s getting a heart attack for no reason. If the word kidnap and his mother would be in the same sentence it would be his mother doing the kidnapping. I and her are alike, we don’t get kidnapped. I’m pretty sure even if she were kidnapped, she would find a way to beat the shit out of the kidnappers, injured or not injured. We escape out of the room and looked around the hallway.  I caught view of a male nurse and decide to catch his attention.

“What can I do to help you?” He arched an eyebrow. I have to say, he’s pretty damn cute. Then again, aren’t all jerks?

“Do you happen to know if Lucia Hunter checked out, she was in room 412,” I kindly asked.

“Lucia Hunter...” He repeated “She didn’t check out.”

“You lost my mother!?” Demon blurt out. All that we received was a confused glance. The nurse made way toward Demon’s mother room as we followed. He gently opened the door and looked over the bed with shock. He heavily sighed and raised up a phone that was attached to the wall and spoke to someone, explaining that she wasn’t here. Chaos stirred among the hospital. People were called. Demon’s father was called as well. I felt my heard pounding faster and faster until I felt as if I would have an actual heart attack. I only calmed down when we searched through every room and found her in a different room because they mistaken her for another person. Gees... way to scare someone to death. She was incredibly weak and tired. The last thing she said to me was “Be careful.” Careful for what, exactly...? Probably Damon and his precious life...as usual.

I and demon stopped at a hotel near the hospital and decided to stay there for the night. My own thoughts wouldn’t let me rest. He told me not to worry about the slaughters, somehow guessing I was thinking about that this time. We both head into different rooms and I stood for about three hours, fully awake.

I tossed around to the other side of the bed and heavily breathed out thoughts running around my head. To him, it didn’t matter. He didn’t believe that the slaughters were in danger and even if they were, they could save themselves by scaring their enemy. Just because the demon said it, didn’t mean that I’d believe it. I couldn’t sleep because it worried me that they really were in danger. If Demon’s mother knew the girls and is FBI, why would FBI capture the girls? Why would the twins run? It doesn’t make any sense. I can’t just sit here and not doing anything about it! The weight of others world are officially on my own shoulders. Damon’s life is in danger. His mother’s life is in danger. My sister, parents, and I are in danger. The twins may be in danger. Who else should I add on to the list?

I tossed around the side, heavily breathing out again and yelped out loudly as much as my lungs could carry. It was hard to make out because of the darkness in the room.  He flashes a charming smile and laughs quietly. I looked into the demons piercing blue eyes and noticed how they were slightly darker than usual and a different shade of blue. I narrowed my eyes at him as my jaw clenched. I could see his eyes being bloodshot. He got drunk, the bastard. He not only got into my private room but also stepped in drunk. Where the hell did he get the liquor?  We were together for the whole day! The only time I wasn’t glued to him was during the hours he was supposed to be in his own room, in bed, sleeping.

“De-” I began but got caught off when my mouth was covered by a black glove. That wasn’t Demon... Under the sheets, I thrust my kneecap into the crotch. A sound of pain only escaped very quietly, not enough to catch the real demon’s attention. Why make myself scream when I can make them scream? They can’t shut themselves up as much as they can shut me up. I once again, with even harder force slammed my knee again to cause more than enough damage and pain. They screamed out in pain and rolled out of the bed. I swiftly got out of bed and saw the person dressed in black still moving around the ground in pain.

“DAMON!” I screamed out in alert. I climbed on top of the bed and then leapt in the air to jump onto the enemy’s stomach. I’m a psychopath... What do you expect? I’ll do just about anything to save my own ass. The person rolled away from where I landed. As soon as I was about to hop over him to the door, he lifted a gun and aimed for my head. The gun glistened from the moonlight emitting from the window. I intensely froze numb at the sight of the gun. Now what are you going to do Lexis? I felt a heavy pressure slam into my neck.
