Chapter Twenty Eight

Harley Quinn’s POV

I could hear the sounds of a struggle from outside of the security room. The noises made it clear…Batman and the Boy Brat had arrived.

“Attention, Attention!” I hollered into the microphone of the intercom system.

“Patient #1, Batman, has arrived home! Let’s show him a warm welcome boys!”

I lifted my finger off of the button and set the microphone down. Watching over the security cameras, I could see our Joker gang was getting their butts handed to them! Keeping the mission Mr. J had given me in mind, I exited the security control room and once again made my way down Arkham’s halls.

La di da di da, di da, La di da di da

I skipped down the hallways. Oh Mr. J would be so proud of me, once I completed my mission. I made it back to the front entrance way. Swarms of members of the Joker gang laid unconscious on the floor. I rolled my eyes, what failures!

Freeze guy…or whatever, was firing his icy gun thing at B-man, and missing. Bird brain, Robin, was struggling to avoid Bane. I found myself wanting a box of popcorn.

I waited for Phase Two of my secret mission to begin. I felt a little tap on my shoulder and looked into the prettiest green eyes, even prettier than Ivy’s. They were part of a cute little girl’s face, who wore make up just like mine.

“C’mon kid” I said grabbing her by the arm and running past Batsy and Robin.

“Annie!” Robin shouted as we ran by. He stopped tussling with Bane and chased after us.

“Robin, no!” Batman shouted in response, but it was too late, Robby-Poo was already chasing after us.

Bait accepted.

Robin’s POV

“Is that all you got, nino?” Bane taunted as he hurled his massive fist at me. I flipped out of the way, narrowly avoiding becoming a pancake.

Then out of the corner of my eye, I saw her. Harley had her by the wrist and they were running down one of Arkham’s many hallways.

“Annie!” I yelled after her.

She didn’t even turn around. I evaded Bane for one last time and began running after her. Harley turned around for a split second and noticed I was following her.

“Come and get it, Robby” She taunted.

I smiled, she thought she would get away but I knew that I could run faster.

As she and “Jester” turned the corner, I sprinted as fast as I could, I knew I was going to catch them. But as I turned the corner I was struck over the head with something very, very heavy. My eyes started to swell shut as I fell to the ground and started going unconscious. I knew I had been played.

As I looked up to see my attacker, I noticed Harley’s grip on Jester’s arm loosened and the girl transformed into a giant blob of clay…Clayface. He had somehow gotten free from when Batman and I met him at the docks.

I tried to remain conscious but it was no use. I had gotten myself captured and I hadn’t managed to save Annie. Now I had to hope Batman could somehow pull off one of his miracles to save us both. My heavy eyes finally slammed shut.

Jester’s POV.

I followed behind Joker, not saying a word, until we reached the intensive treatment area of Arkham. As we walked, I looked down at my hands. They were shaking and I couldn’t understand why. My veins had a strong green tint underneath my painted white skin.

My eyesight also seemed like it was shaken up, my peripheral vision was blurred. I put it out of my mind and kept walking. My steps were shaky and uneven, I felt like I was going to fall over.

“Where is Harley?” I asked.

“Busy. She’s got a bat to deal with” Joker replied.

Finally we reached the High Security area. Sets of strait jackets hung on the walls, beds with restraints where everywhere and even cages. It looked scary, even to me. The walls were a bland beige color yet there were made out of stone. The room looked inescapable.

“What am I doing here?” I asked, my headache increasing.

“Look kid, I don’t have time to spare you all the details but the point is, you’re going to bring down the bat for me! Understand?” His hand tightly clenched around my neck and his voice grew snarly.

Noticing the look of confusion on my face, he released me and took up a kinder tone.

“Here, go put these on” He said as he threw me a new outfit. It looked to be some sort of orange uniform.

“What’s wrong with my outfit?” I asked which caused Joker to shoot another menacing glance at me. I decided to stop asking questions and go change.

Once I had completed changing in the bathroom, I noticed a mirror hanging on the wall. I looked into it, smiling at the clown girl staring back at me. My new orange prison outfit still suited me, Joker always knew best. I noticed the words on the back and struggled to sound out the word “ARKHAM”.

Suddenly, I felt overwhelmingly dizzy and nauseas. I clutched the sides of the sink to try and steady myself. Sweat streamed down the sides of my face. I closed my eyes and tried to block it out.  Everything was spinning, my heart felt like it had stopped beating.

I reopened them and looked back in the mirror, the wave of dizziness seemed to pass. I continued to stare at my reflection.

Then it spoke back.

“You can feel it, can’t you?” my reflection spoke.

“..wha…what’s going on?” I said to myself.

Suddenly my mirror image climbed out of the mirror. I was horrified. She looked just like me, I shook my head to make the apparition disappear; but it didn’t, it only changed its appearance.

My walking reflection had a plain, unpainted face and dark brown eyes whereas my face was covered in makeup and I had green eyes. Her eyes were bloodshot and swollen, she was covered in cuts and bruises.

The girl who had climbed out of the mirror picked me up by the shirt.

“Hello Jester, having fun?” she scowled.

I tried to control myself.

“You…you’re Annie”

The girl nodded, still holding me tightly.

“How is this possible?” I asked, I was so confused.

She glared at me, I could feel like something wasn’t right. Maybe I was dreaming.

Snap out of it, Jester.

“You’re going to die, Jester” the girl snarled viciously.

It’s just a dream.

“What do you want?” I asked, grimacing back at her.

“I want you to get out” She threatened as she struck me. Then she began punching me like a sand bag, I was completely defenseless and for the first time, I could actually feel pain.

WAKE UP.

After several rounds of beating, my eyes flickered open. I was on the floor of the bathroom. Joker kept slapping me in the face.

“Finally!” he said angrily, once he knew I was awake.

I picked myself up off the ground.

“Don’t be a silly little girl! I will not have you ruining this for me!” Joker yelled.

I nodded in compliance and regained control of myself.

As I sat down on the floor of the High Security room, I tried to convince myself that I had experienced some sort of dream but I knew that wasn’t true.

What if she is real? What if I used to be Annie and something happened?

There was a knock at the door and Joker approached it. Thoughts raced through my head. If there really was some part of me that was missing, I would be damned if it broke free. I was with Joker and Harley now, and they were my family; I actually belonged. Batman and Robin were corrupt villains and I was determined to not let them break me.

I took a deep breath and then reassured myself.

“I’m going to be Jester forever”
