Chapter One

Chapter 1:

The rain started to pour down on the masses of umbrellas that were dimly lit by the Gotham City streetlights. I followed the crowds as I usually did on my way home from work. The wind began to pick up and I had to hold down my skirt with one arm. I was never one for skirts but it was the required uniform of the retro diner I worked at.

The crowds began to divide until I was standing before the deserted alley way which led to the apartment building I lived in. I started to make my way through the ominous alley way as I had a thousand times before. My ankles twisted with each step I took in high heels that were clearly too big for me and I accidently wiped half of my already a mess makeup off. My mind began to wander to distant matters when I became aware of the faint sound of footsteps that were behind me.

My heart took up a faster beat. I began to pick up the pace of my walk. I kept my head down and continued walking. A vulgar laugh was made audible behind me, closer than I had expected. I picked up my pace even faster, practically running. The end of the alleyway was not fifteen feet in front of me when all of a sudden a figure lunged out of the shadows and grabbed me by the arm.

My eyes widened in shock and I pulled my arm as hard as I could, in an attempt to free myself. The grip was not released but tightened and my arm was yanked back so my body faced my attacker. My gaze was met with filthy green eyes and a scarred up face, decorated with a grin.

“Hello gorgeous” the goon whispered as he brought himself closer to me. His friend that was following me had now caught up.

“Look what I caught, Bernie” said the goon squeezing my arm in a death grip. “Such a pretty little fishy” he continued.

“I hope you were planning on sharing” the other goon replied. A look of disgust crossed my face and I decided now was the time to strike.

Unexpectedly, I threw my free hand, yielding a fist, towards the man who was pinning down my other arm. The punch stung him square in the jaw.

My father had taught me how to fight when I was little, him being a famous boxer I learned well. The goon with no name released me from his grip to grasp his jaw in pain, I began to run furiously. My heart was beating as fast as I thought possible. I blinked and the next thing I knew I had run square into another goon. I fell backwards. More and more goons began coming out of the shadows until I was surrounded by at least seven grisly looking men.

I started to walk backwards, in a useless attempt to evade them all. One snatched me by both arms and pinned me up against the brick wall of the alley way. “Where do you think you’re going, princess?” he asked with a smug grin. I began to kick and flail with all my might. I would not go down without a fight.

“Ooh she’s a fighter” One of the surrounding goons said with a nasty chuckle.

“She better be worth all this trouble” huffed the one holding me down. I began to let out a scream but it was quieted by a massive hand being placed over my mouth. I bit it in disgust.

A loud fluttering sound came from what seemed like the sky. Then a sinister sounding laugh.

“What was that?” asked one of the goons anxiously. “You don’t think it was…”another continued before being told to shut up.

The next thing I knew several of my attacker were being propelled backwards. I could briefly make out two shapes in the dark. After what seemed like no more than five seconds, all of my attackers were strewn across the ground writhing in pain.

The two figures approached me and it became apparent who they were when they stepped into the moonlight. The smaller one was bearing the colors green, yellow and red as well as a black mask. He was lean yet muscular and his black hair fell in a perfectly messy way. The taller one was very muscular and wore the mask of a bat. My saviors were the dynamic duo, Batman and Robin.

“Are you okay, miss?” the Boy Wonder asked me. I was still shocked over what had taken place in the last few moments of my life.“Miss?” Robin asked again as he took another step closer to me.

I snapped out of my trance and replied with a stutter “y…y..yess. Thank you.” I said with a glance into the heroic masked figure that stood only a few inches from me.

“You’re safe now” a deeper voice said, it was the Batman.

“it’s not safe for a girl like you to be walking through a dangerous alley way like this, where were you headed?” Boy Wonder asked. I wasn’t so sure I liked his tone, I could usually handle myself, and I wasn’t weak.

“Home” I replied trying not to sound ungrateful. “the apartment building on Freemont street” I continued.

“We’ll take you there” Batman husked in his deep, disguised voice.

Before I really knew what was happening, Robin had projected a batarang with a rope attached into the sky and scooped me up in his arms. With one click on his utility belt, we were launched into the sky. My eyes widened and my breath was taken away. It was simply the most amazing thing I had ever done in my life. I clung to Robin out of fear of falling, he seemed to smile. I was worried that he would drop me, I was a small girl but still being a girl I was worried I was too heavy for him.

After flying through the skies, we reached the roof of my apartment building. “You’re safe” Robin whispered to me as he delicately released me from his arms.

“Time to go, Robin” Batman said in monotone. With one leap and the throw of another batarang, Batman was off with the night. Robin turned to go.

“Wait!” I said not wanting him to leave just yet, Robin looked back at me.

“Thank you” I said as I leaned in and kissed him on the cheek. His face crinkled in delight at recognition, a smile crossed his face.

“Anytime, miss” he said and with the toss of his batarang, he disappeared into the night.
