Chapter Eight

As the days seemed to evaporate before me and the Police Officers Ball began to approach rapidly, I began to feel more and more conflicted. I was just an awkward shy girl who could barely muster up the courage to talk to a guy, now I was enthralled by two at the same time!

Thursday night, the night before the ball, I had the worst nightmare. In the dream, I was with Dick at the ball when all of a sudden all of the glass windows burst. Then in came the Dynamic Duo, Batman and Robin. But they weren’t the same, they were evil. Robin pulled out a revolver and shot Dick in the chest before I could do anything. I knelt down by his body as blood began to seep out all over the floor. I felt helpless, just like the night my father was killed. I hated feeling helpless.

I guess I started screaming in my sleep because in the middle of the night, Nick burst into my room. He shook me awake and I was ever so thankful.

“Bad dream?” he asked as he brushed my hair out of my face. He looked at my nightstand and noticed an empty cup.

“Hot chocolate before bed? Always gives me nightmares” He remarked comically. “Thanks” I said to him with a certain sense of sincerity. He looked at my glassy eyes and smiled

“That’s what I’m here for, Goodnight.” Luckily then I was whisked away to peaceful dreamless sleep.

After a crap day at school and me screwing up my make-up about a thousand times, I was finally ready for the ball. I slipped into my classy but tall black heels and made my way into my older brother’s room.

“Ready?” I asked as I took notice of his attire, his black tuxedo looked classy as well. Nick nodded just as the door bell rang.

“Can you get that?” he asked me as he was struggling to tie his tie.

I complied with his request and opened the door to find Nick’s girlfriend Becky in a beautiful evergreen gown. “Hi Becky!” I said excitedly, “Your dress is so beautiful!” I exclaimed.

She smiled back graciously and flicked her red tinted hair out of her eyes. “Thanks! Yours too!” She replied. My dress was blue, as it was my favorite color. Made of lace and satin, the bright blue dress fit me like a glove and I was ever so thankful for it.

“Nick! Becky’s here!!” I shouted to him and he emerged from his bedroom.

“You like gorgeous, hun” He said to Becky as he went in for a kiss.

“I saw a limo waiting outside” Becky said with a hint of confusion, we Bo’s weren’t exactly the limo type.

“Bruce Wayne sent it over for us” I said slightly embarrassed as Nick looked at me with astonishment. I had told him I had a “date” to the ball, I just didn’t tell him who it was.

After nearly falling down the stairs in heels and tripping on the way in the limo, I made it successfully to the Wayne Mansion.

Dick was waiting for me when I got out. Dressed in a tux, he barely looked like himself. Dick gave me elevator eyes before saying “You look…amazing!!” I blushed, feverishly.

“You don’t look so bad yourself” I remarked back.

He hooked arms with me and we made our way into the beautifully decorated ballroom. In all the times I had been over to Wayne Manor, I had never seen the ballroom. Seeing it for the first time, I was astounded my just how massive it was. “Dance?” Dick asked me and before I knew it I was whisked onto the dance floor.

Dick’s hand delicately slid down to my waist and we waltzed around among all the adult couples. I had to try my very hardest not to trip or step on him.

“You know?” he said as we danced around “Blue is definantly your color, you should wear it more.”

I let out a hushed giggle. He seemed to have a new sense of confidence, I liked it.

After hours of seemingly endless yet fun dancing and partying, Dick asked me if I wanted to go outside. I nodded and we made our escape from the loud music and mass of people.

He led out the back doors of the mansion and we walked around the garden. The moonlight lit the trees and the ground just barely enough so I could see.

“So…Having fun?” he asked me curiously.

“Totally!” I replied as I poked at my hair that fell to my hips. “I think this is the coolest thing I’ve ever been to” I added. He smiled but I couldn’t see it in the darkness.

“You’ve never been to a ball before?” He asked with a sense of nonchalantness.

I let out a slight scoff “No...” I replied “well..I did have to go to prom last year but that was way different.”

Dick made a face and asked “You didn’t like going to prom as a freshman? Isn’t that like every girls dream?”

I shook my head vigorously and explained “I really didn’t like my date, he blackmailed me into going with him.” Dick’s overprotective side began to show and he asked how.

I tried to elaborate “well, the kid I went with was Trent Michaels. His dad owns the diner I work at. He said if I didn’t go with him, he would get his dad to fire me and I really need that job” I explained. I could feel Dick clench his fists in anger. I tried to calm him down by changing the subject.

After talking about the weather and other mediocre things, Dick brought the subject back up.

“So you didn’t have fun at prom cause you didn’t like your date?” He asked questioningly.

I sighed and replied “yes”.

I was a bit taken back then when he asked me “Well do you like me?” I struggled with the answer, not wanting to sound too eager or too indifferent.

“Yes..” I replied back.

Dick then added “I like you too”

At this point we had stopped walking, and we were concealed in the garden by tall trees. We were so close that I could feel his mint breathe.

“You’re not like most other girls” he said as if I was some sort of difficult puzzle he was trying to solve.

“You’re not like most other boys” I fired back. I leant in closer, our lips were almost touching. Dick pulled back slightly, as if he was apprehensive about something but he quickly forgot about it as he pulled me towards him and our lips touched.

He slid his hands around my waist and the kiss began to intensify. I slipped my hands around the back of his neck. He fiddled with my long hair as it flowed down my back. It felt like fireworks and it was the most amazing feeling. After what only seemed like a few seconds, we pulled apart.

Everything seemed so foreign to me as we made our way back to the mansion, but I knew one thing for absolutely certain: Dick Grayson was Robin.

 A Few Hours Later:

After a few hours, I was back in the safety of my own home to sort through everything that was going through my head. I sat down with a pudding cup and tried to figure out what was what.

Dick Grayson, my dorky friend, my English partner, was the crime fighting badass sidekick of Batman! I couldn’t fathom it. That kiss had made me sure of it, though. They did have the same hair. My mind began to think of all the similarities between Robin and Dick. I began to think of all the times I had Déjà vu thinking about Robin when I was with Dick. I thought for a second I was going crazy.

But that’s when the worst happened.

The front door to our apartment slammed open, I thought it was Nick so I shouted “Nick! Be Quiet! It’s late.”

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

The next thing I knew a loud “BANG” rocketed through my head. I knew the sound all too well. The sound of a gunshot.

I whirled around from my spot at the kitchen table and screamed “NICK!!!!!” but it was too late. The last thing I saw was my brother’s bloody corpse on the floor before a pale, white hand clamped down over my mouth and I blacked out.
