Chapter Sixty-Three: The Legend of Heavy Harry

Soon enough, Halloween was just around the corner. The engines on Sir Topham Hatt's Railway all look forward to the Halloween season. They all go and get to see Sir Topham Hatt's fireworks display at Callan Station and Castle. They also love to see children dressing up as wizards, witches and ghosts. It was also time the Josephine Railway engines got to see how they celebrate Halloween, along with enjoying the evening celebrations, also including Edward's ghost stories.

Down at Tidmouth Sheds, most of the North Western locomotives and Josephine Railway engines have all gathered there, along with Raleigh, Hayden, Bertie, Emilia, Mack, Hayden, Belinda, Hayden, Rowan and William the Garratt engines, just as Edward puffs in. It's about a week before Halloween, so they thought to get into the spirit of it.

"Good to see you all." Bertie smiled to Thomas, Percy, Lady and Toby.

"Same here." Thomas smiled back.

"Agreed. It's good to see one another." Hayden added.

"And on a night like tonight." Rowan included next.

"Alright, everyone is here." Edward smiled as he sat on the turntable. "Now, it's time for us to begin."

"Edward, we've heard so many of your ghost stories, they have gotten bored." James spoke out, everyone all looking to the red mixed-traffic engine. "We need a new story."

"Oh, and you happen to have one, James?" Raleigh spoke out, James looking embarrassed as he looked down at his buffers. "Guess not." The others laughed.

"Okay, James. Let's see who has a new story." Edward acknowledged, everyone looking to the wise engine. "Does anyone have a story to tell?" He offered, puffing off the turntable in reverse. Nobody speaks up at first.

"I might have one." Everyone looks to see Braedey puff up, the turntable now turning to link up with his track. "It is something that I've heard from my old driver, but I wasn't sure to believe in it."

"What do you mean, Braedey?" Gordon questioned, the crimson locomotive rolling onto the turntable as it spins around so he can see everyone.

"It's a story from Australia when my old driver went there on holiday. He heard it from workmen around the area, and it seemed to be an urban legend." Braedey clarified.

"Urban legend?" Hayden questioned.

"What legend?" Raleigh inquired.

"Something like me?" Lady asked.

"Sort of, but not really." Braedey answered back. "It's actually... a little more complicated."

"What is this story about?" Austin asked.

"Is it spooky?" Mack wondered.

"The story is about a particular engine, a steam engine that once ran on the Australian Railways... or so I've been told." Braedey answers and paused impressively.

"The story is... the Legend of Heavy Harry."

"Heavy Harry?" Hayden wondered.

"Very well, Braedey." Edward spoke finally. "Let's hear it, then."

Braedey cleared his throat and he begins the story. "Heavy Harry, as the story goes, is the single example of a Victorian Railways H Class 4-8-4 steam locomotive that was built to be an express passenger engine, and is the largest locomotive ever in Australia, weighing in at 260 tonnes, a title for steam traction."

"Oh, my..." Diana muttered.

"How odd." Hayden added.

"I say, that's impressive." Edward wondered.

"Now I feel antiquated." Willian remarked.

James lightly scoffed. "This engine doesn't sound real."

"HE IS REAL!" Braedey boomed, everyone immediately silenced as they look at the Great Western locomotive. "In old stories on a night much like tonight, the dingoes and wolves of the outback howl at the moon off the Great Dividing Range, while the summer desert winds blew hot, like the fires of the smelter's yard." Everyone all listened in as Braedey continued. "This engine was constructed at the start of World War 2, meant to be a set of them, but only assigned to one unit. However, the locomotive works did not realise yet, but what they built wasn't an engine... but a fire-breathing monster. Heavy Harry, as the engine was named, was a beast - it attacked any engine that got in its way, flattened anything in its path, and it always spat fire from its funnel and pistons whenever it would, as if it was some kind of mechanical dragon. This locomotive was then shunted off into the furthest corners of yards and in sheds, so nobody would ever find it. But one night in 1955... Heavy Harry vanished, never to be seen again. All that was left was the shattered remains of the shed it was housed within." Braedey paused impressively, the engines all now enticed by this story. "Some believe that of Heavy Harry to have been scrapped. Others do say it still roams the rails. But many think of otherwise, especially when they knew of Heavy Harry's actions in the past. Whenever the moon is full and a thick fog rolls in, one could then hear the sound of train wheels grinding against the rails, the deep heavy chugging of pistons and traction rods moving, as well as the bellow of a very deep whistle, one that seems to echo out for miles around. If anyone got close, they'd say they could see the silhouette of a gigantic engine with the markings 'H220' on the front buffer, chugging along the rails before disappearing into the night..."

A deep whistle echoed out, everyone yelling in fright as they look around in shock and worry. However, they look to see it was William who had blew that whistle, the Garratt laughing with Rowan.

"Sorry. I just had to." William laughed.

"Wow. That was some story..." Henry commented.

"How unique." Hayden added.

"I agree." Thomas shivers lightly. "That is some story."

"Yeah. It made my frames shiver." Lady shuddered.

"Impressive, Braedey." Edward commented next. "What a unique story."

Gordon, however, did not seem convinced. James was also not sure if believing it, even though he did get spooked by the story, but he didn't want to show it out. "You really expect me to believe in a story like that?" Gordon sniffed indignantly. "That's nonsense."

"Y-Yeah. N-Nonsense." James stuttered in agreement, trying not to be scared.

"Oh, Gordon, don't ruin it." Thomas grumbled.

"Say what you will, but Heavy Harry is definitely out there." Braedey spoke ominously. "As you all head on home to your sheds tonight, keep an eye out on the line. Heavy Harry could be lurking... anywhere..." He trails off, then smiled casually. "Well, Goodnight." With that, he puffs off the turntable in reverse and departs.

"Well... that just happened." Hayden muttered.

"Wh-What?" James echoed in stunned shock.

"Oh, don't tell me you were spooked by that story, little James." Gordon scoffed. "Honestly, an engine that big, it would flatten the rails it travelled on."

"What about Peter? He's 159 tonnes, yet he's here." Raleigh inquired.

"He's got a point there." Hayden agreed.

"Raleigh, I know that. But the fact of an engine that big being possible sounds almost ludicrous." Gordon now said. "An engine like that with the way it acted as Braedey described, no wonder it had been scrapped."

"But Braedey said it's a rumour. What if it isn't?" Percy piped up, some of the engines agreeing with this.

"Whatever the case, best we keep an eye out in case." Bertie suggested, before he and Emilia drive away back to the bus depot.

"Well, best we head to sleep." Edward suggested.

Sure enough, the engines began to make their way to their respected sheds on their branchlines or staying at Tidmouth. Some of the engines made it back without worry, though others were looking about in uncertainty and fear regarding the Legend of Heavy Harry. Some of them couldn't get to sleep, while others just slept as if they were rocks. In Tidmouth Sheds, Henry quietly left the sheds for the Flying Kipper, but was surprised when William offered to take the train. Henry thanked the Garratt engine and returns to his berth, William now leaving to take the Flying Kipper. But as Henry went back to sleep with Gordon, James was looking about in total uncertainty and worry, the story about Heavy Harry still stuck on his mind...

~*~*~

The next morning, William arrived just before the sun rises, just as Gordon and Henry roll out of their shed berths. They seem alright, though Henry still felt a little shaken. But as they roll out, they all took notice of the weather - there was a heavy fog floating around them.

"Oh, my... I did not expect so much fog." Gordon now spoke up. "This hasn't happened before on Halloween in such a long time."

"Definitely unexpected." Henry commented, then looks over to the red Garratt engine. "By the way, thank you for taking the Flying Kipper for me last night, William."

"No problem, Henry." William smiled back. "It was nice to take an early train." He then looked at the fog. "A speed restriction will definitely be in play with so much fog floating around." He noted.

Gordon understood this. "Yes, indeed. This will not do well for most of us." After getting fired up, he made his way onto the turntable, and he heads off to Knapford.

"Good luck with today, Henry." William smiled, Henry chuffing on away down the rails, William heading off to go and get the heavy goods.

But unbeknown to the engines after they've left, James was still in the sheds, looking like he was stunned and tired. He could only sigh deeply as he slowly lifts out of the shed, feeling rather slow. In fact, James' crew were taking notice of this, especially from how his fire isn't as strong as is normally, which did give them concern.

Throughout the day, James did not even seem to be his cheery self. He was quiet and didn't look at anyone, his eyes looking down at his buffers while going along. But he seems to be slower than normal. On top of that, his trains were late, and nobody seemed to know why. But James wasn't the only one that was acting up.

Over the next few days and nights, Percy, Thomas, Lady, James, Henry, Belinda, Mack even some of the other engines were on edge, all of them looking about as if they're being followed by someone. Whenever they're alone, they could hear the sound of loud chugging but there's no engine around. While on their own, they may hear the bellow of an unfamiliar whistle, the sound echoing from miles around. They would all seem to be looking about the yards and sidings, as if making sure nobody was there. Everyone else was all wondering as to why they were being the way they are...

One evening about two days before Halloween, Gordon had returned with the last express of the day and was backing into his berth. Henry was already there with Edward, Thomas, Lady, James, as well as Diana (who had come along with a Halloween goods train for the party on Halloween night.

"Alright, James." Edward began the conversation, the red engine looking to him. "We've noticed that you, as well as Percy, Thomas, Lady, and a few other engines, have been acting rather strangely as of late."

"And we want to know why." Gordon butted in.

James now looked defensive. "Wha- nothing is wrong!" He laughed nervously. "I mean, you know, all of this Halloween stuff...?"

Thomas looked to James. "Are you sure?"

"Thomas, I'm fine!" James insisted back at the blue tank engine. "It's not like I'm seeing or hearing some ghost engine rumbling around in the fog..." That now got everyone's attention.

"What did you say?" Edward asked.

James realised what he said. "N-Nothing!"

"You've been seeing Heavy Harry, haven't you?" Lady now spoke up, everyone looking to the little engine. "You aren't the only one who has. I've seen what looks like the shape of a huge engine moving about in the fog."

"I've seen something like that as well." Henry added in. "And the sound of a howling whistle in the night."

"Y-Yes, I heard that as well." James now stuttered.

"So each of us have seen something that might be that of Heavy Harry's spirit..." Edward mused, the others all silent as they thought about it.

Gordon, however, wasn't convinced. He scoffed at this, even disregarding the fact he had an encounter with the Half-Engine. "Do you honestly believe that bogus story? All of you, this is ridiculous of you believing that story Braedey had told you the night beforehand."

"Gordon, you cannot deny the fact each of us have all heard or even seen this ghoul." Edward spoke back to the big blue engine.

"I believe you all have been seeing things through the fog. And what you claim being the whistles of that big engine, it could have been another engine." Gordon interjected back with a scoff.

"Gordon, are you forgetting the fact you had seen the Half-Engine?" Thomas pointed out, Gordon now being silenced. "If you know the Half-Engine DOES exist, then why do you think Heavy Harry DOESN'T?" He asked.

"Because a huge locomotive such as this Heavy Harry cannot possibly exist." Gordon huffed. And with that, he puffs away to go to another shed to sleep.

A little later after Gordon had left, Braedey arrived with Diana alongside, the two having double-headed a fast passenger train earlier that evening. When they arrived at the sheds, Thomas and Lady both explained to the two about Gordon's denial about the Heavy Harry story and what they have seen.

"I see." Braedey mused. "Most peculiar..."

"That's an understatement." Diana commented.

"Gordon can't seem to believe we've seen Heavy Harry out on the mainline." Henry stated next. "But we've all heard or even seen his silhouette."

"There has got to be a way to get Gordon to accept it." James grunted, frowning in frustration. "If only..."

"There must be a way..." Thomas agreed with James.

Braedey looks down to his buffers in thought, then he blew his whistle in response. "Wait! I've got an idea." He announced.

"You do?" Edward, Thomas, James, Lady, and Henry asks in unison.

"We just need a little help from Darla..." Braedey smiled to Diana, who looks to him in confusion.

A little later, Braedey arrived at Knapford Station after everyone had gone home for the night, and his driver called Mr. Franklin, the Josephine Railway controller listening in to Braedey's plan. After hearing this, Mr. Franklin decided to go forward with the plan, getting arrangements done before morning, and he'll have to get Darla prepared for the operation...

~*~*~

Sure enough, Halloween was underway. The engines all worked around the clock to get their work done so they can get the chance to find the perfect spot to see the fireworks display up at Callan Castle. Sir Topham Hatt had announced to his engines once they were finished with their work, they can go forth and see the castle. Everyone was more than ready to celebrate.

As the sun was setting, Braedey was now sitting by the platform at Vicarstown Station, now waiting patiently for when Darla and Mr. Franklin arrive. As he sat and he waits, he could see the silhouette of a huge engine rolling into view, someone waving out to the red engine.

"Excellent..." Braedey smiled deviously, the silhouette of the locomotive coming to a stop with a loud hiss of its brakes and pistons.

"You have to admit, the workshop boys did a great job." Caitlyn Robinson commented as she walks up. "Good to see you, Braedey."

"You too, Ma'am." Braedey smiled back.

"So, how will this plan go forth?" Mr. Franklin asked, now walking over to his premier express engine.

"Well, the plan is this..." Braedey began to say, then he began to explain the plan, Mr. Franklin now showing a rather mischievous smile on his face....

As the sun set and the moon began to rise, the fog all across the island seemed to give the atmosphere of the night an eerie and ominous feeling. Gordon was on his own, travelling light-engine, as he now made his way down the track heading toward Callan Castle. But as he travelled along, the mood seemed to change. The trees all around the line seem to cast tall shadows and scary shapes, the faint wind whistling on through the branches of the trees, while the wind oddly felt hot. Gordon did not know why, but he felt a chill go down his frame, his wheels shuddering as he goes along.

'Heavy Harry...' Gordon scoffed mentally. 'What nonsense.'

But then, the sound of deep puffing could be heard, the puffing not coming from Gordon. The blue engine now slows his pace, just as he could see a yellow signal up ahead of him. Gordon knew he had to stop, coming to a gentle and gracious halt. But he could still hear the sound of the deep puffing, as well as the clunking of traction rods, and it sounds like it's getting closer, coming from up ahead. Gordon now could hear the terrible sound of train wheels grinding against rails, only for the bellow of a very deep whistle to abruptly cut through the silence, one that seems to echo out for miles around, the air going silent, even the trees all stopped swaying.

Gordon now felt a chill race down the length of his boiler. As he looks on, he could see a wall of steam just up ahead, and he thought he could see the silhouette of a gigantic engine through the wall of steam. The deep chugging was now getting louder and louder, the grinding of wheels against rails also getting louder, the silhouette getting closer and closer. But as it does so, the wall of steam seemed to change colour, changing from a smoky white to a vicious blood-like red, as a lone light seems to shine through the wall of red steam.ย  Gordon's eyes widened in concern and trepidation, his wheels and traction rods shuddering. As he looks on, the deep chuffing sounds like a monster taking deep breaths, the light shining like a lighthouse beacon.

A tense and sinister moment seemed to float all around. With a bellowing whistle, the silhouette revealed itself to Gordon through the fog, revealing itself to be a huge black steam engine, the markings 'H220' on its front buffer, red steam erupting from its funnel and pistons, its headlamp shining right at Gordon!!

Gordon was in shock! "IT'S HEAVY HARRY!!!" He yells. With a blast of his whistle, Gordon rockets away down the line, racing past the huge engine, and rockets on down the line towards Callan Castle.

As soon as Gordon raced through the wall of red steam and continued down the line, the huge black engine now began to slowly reverse...

Meanwhile, at Callan Castle, everyone had gathered up and they were now preparing to enjoy the Halloween celebrations. Sir Topham Hatt and his family, plus his daughter Emily Helen Hatt, were all there, Mr. Franklin and his family also there with the Josephine Railway engines. However, it seems though there was no sign ofย  Gordon anywhere.

"Where is Gordon?" Thomas wondered. "He should've been here by now."

"I am sure that he will be here soon, Thomas." Emily reassured to the blue tank engine, gently patting his side tank.

"Given that he's the fastest engine on Sodor, he'd be here in no time." James joked, he, Raleigh, and Henry all sharing a laugh.ย

"Easy, fellas." Diana spoke up, Austin and Liliana all snickering.

Just then, the sound of frantic puffing and a frantic engine's whistle could be heard, everyone looking on, just as Gordon raced into view, looking terrified as he slams on his brakes, sparks flying off his wheels as he now came to a stop, steam hissing from his pistons.

"Gordon, what in the world are you doing?" Sir Topham questioned to his express engine. "Racing about like that."

"Yeah. You look like you've just seen a ghost." Braedey commented.

Gordon now looks as pale as snow. "T-T-The legend! T-T-The ghost! I saw it! I saw Heavy Harry! Braedey was right!" He panted out in fright.

"What?" The other engines asked in shock. "You saw it? The ghost itself? That's crazy! How can you?!"

"Heavy Harry?" Sir Topham Hatt asked in confusion. "What are you talking about, Gordon?"

Just then, the sound of deep puffing could be heard, as well as the clunking of traction rods, and it sounds like it's getting closer. Everyone now could hear the terrible sound of train wheels grinding against rails, only for the bellow of a deep whistle to cut through the silence, one that seems to echo out for miles around, the air going silent. Everyone froze and stayed silent, just as a wall of steam could be seen coming around the corner, everyone looking on and staying in place. Gordon froze in place and shivered in fright, closing his eyes in fright. A moment later, emerging from the wall of steam, was a huge black steam engine, the markings 'H220' on its front buffer.

"Oh, my...." Emily and Sir Topham look in shock and awe.

"There it is..." Edward muttered.
"It's true..." Thomas and Lady added.
"The legend is real..." Henry and James stuttered.

The engine now rolled up to a stop with a loud hiss of steam from its brakes, its headlamp shining on before it then flickers and shuts off. A moment of tense silence floats around the engine, but then...

"Hey, Gordon. Are you okay?"

Gordon's eyes snapped open and he looks over to see Heavy Harry standing before him and the others, the steam now settled. A second later, the firebox door clicks open, and it swung open to reveal...

"Darla?!" Gordon yells in shock, everyone looking on. Gordon was right. There, sitting before Gordon, was none other than Darla the Tangiwai Engine, who shows a small innocent smile despite what she has on.

"Okay, I did NOT see that coming." Hayden comments.

"What in the... Darla, what is this? What is going on here?" Sir Topham Hatt now questioned in pure and utter confusion.

"Sir. I believe I can explain all of this." Braedey spoke up as he and Mr. Franklin began to explain about the story of Heavy Harry, everyone's 'sightings', as well as the plan of Braedey's. "And that's how it happened."

"And this story of Heavy Harry?" Emily asked.

"It was a story that my old crew had heard about when they travelled to Australia after World War 2." Braedey clarified. "They heard it from some workmen who have claimed to have seen the very engine itself."

"And when Gordon said he didn't believe in the story, Braedey had this idea of disguising Darla as the very engine itself, thanks to her having the same wheel arrangement as Heavy Harry." Mr. Franklin added in. "She has on a hollow shell that that makes her look as big, as well as having red steam enhancers to make her look menacing."

"And it seems to have done a good job." Thomas now commented, Gordon panting out in exhaustion, steam shooting out of his cylinder cocks. "But I will say this: you definitely win the costume contest." He laughed, Lady and Percy also giggling with the others.

"I guess I do." Darla snickered.

"Sir Topham, we understand it isn't the right thing to do, but we never intended this to happen." Braedey spoke sincerely.

Sir Topham looked to Braedey, but he shows a knowing smile and winks to the Great Western locomotive. "It is quite alright, Braedey. Your plan was very impressive."

"So... there's no Legend of Heavy Harry?" Henry asked.

"Actually, Henry, there is such a thing as Heavy Harry." Emily spoke up, walking over to the green engine. "He is an actual locomotive, and is the only example of his class of Australian Railways. He sits on static display now at the Newport Railway Museum not far from the city of Melbourne."

"Oh. I see." Henry understood.

"Huh. Didn't expect that." James commented.

Gordon sighed in relief, looking down at his buffers as he heard that this legend was just some folklore talk, and the actual engine is real and is a museum piece. He looks to Darla and he then laughed with Darla, the other engines also laughing as well, the Halloween celebrations now underway...

Happy Halloween
